PREVIEW: Capricornia Yearling Sale 2YO Classic

By Kobie O'Brien

Central Queensland racing heads to Rockhampton this weekend with two big meetings, headlined by the $100,000 Capricornia Yearling Sale QTIS 2-Y-O Plate.

The race features some of the region's best juveniles, including the Tom Button-trained Gypsy Toff, already seen in town with a last-start third at Doomben on March 24.

The Chris Munce-trained Amron will also make her debut in this race after trialing at Doomben recently.

1. Ruby Georgie (Barrier 10)

Breeding: Sidereus x Little Pin Up Girl

Trainer: Tom Button

Jockey: Les Tilley

Won on debut over Hot Chocolate and Shenron, with Shenron going on to win by 2.3L next start as well as knocking off the well-fancied favorite Brooks Pleasure by two lengths. The gelding is yet to miss a place in four starts, beaten only by some good ones in Tambo’s Vixen and Cyclone Topgirl. Beat Legal Ties last start. He’ll have to contend with barrier 10 but no stranger to settling midfield.

2. Wicked Grimshaw (Barrier 4)

Breeding: Wicked Style x Harley Ma

Trainer: Tom Button

Jockey: Zoe White (a)

Only a couple of lengths off Tambo’s Vixen and stable-mate Ruby Georgie on debut before an impressive win over Rockethead and Attique next time out. Did plenty wrong last start when he was beaten by a considerable margin after looming up at the 400m. Ideally drawn and in-from jockey on board, can improve.

3. Synonyms (Barrier 11)

Breeding: Teranaba x Lots Of Allure

Trainer: Raymond West

Jockey: Lachlan Dodds (a)

Beaten 7.25 lengths by Ruby Georgie in a trial before finishing 4 lengths off Gohan and The Tax Accountant on debut when running 4th. The gelding showed a dramatic improvement when breaking through at Mackay on March 27, overcoming barrier 13 to get one back on the Tax Accountant. The 1200m trip will suit him just fine here after coming from the back of the field to score last start with apprentice Lachlan Dodds staying on board.

4. Gohan (Barrier 8)

Breeding: Carrara x Fine Shakira

Trainer: Mick Attard

Jockey: Matthew Bennett

Won by 1.25 lengths on debut at $41 over a smart one in the Tax Accountant and eventual big winner Synonyms. Beaten almost 16 lengths by Brooks Pleasure in his only trial however. Benefited from speed-on when winning and extra trip suits but meets better opposition here.

5. The Tax Accountant (Barrier 1)

Breeding: Love Conquers All x Flo Jo

Trainer: Tom Button

Jockey: Ashley Butler

Yet to break through but far from disappointing in only 2 starts, defeated by a mere aggregate of just 1.5 lengths in both starts to date after winning his only trial. Good honest front running type who will be in a speed battle early on with favorites Gypsy Toff and Brook’s Pleasure, likely box seating from barrier 1. 1200m no dramas, he will give himself every chance.

6. Uber Mover (Barrier 15)

Breeding: Poet’s Voice x Vivante

Trainer: Paul Butterworth

Jockey: Bridget Grylls

9.2 lengths last in a Gold Coast trial before a similar result at Deagon. The colt couldn’t go with them on debut at the Gold Coast but should of found it a bit easier at Lismore, finishing 3rd of 5 before a 10-length defeat at Doomben at the hands of a really good one in Rains Aplenty. Doesn’t read well on paper but he’s faced very strong opposition. Runs to date have been over 1100, 1200 and 1300.

7. Marway (Barrier 12)

Breeding: Hemingway x Maredamah

Trainer: John O'Sing

Jockey: Quayde Krogh (a)

Form isn’t red hot but did beat Shenron in a trial. The gelding wasn’t all that far off Gohan and The Tax Accountant but hard to map where he’s been beaten by a $41 shot and a $21 shot when leading in both races and fading over the 1200m distance. Will have to do plenty of work will find the front from barrier 12 and has to improve on latest effort.

8. Wicked Ways (Barrier 13)

Breeding: Wicked Style x Camphor

Trainer: Liam Birchley

Jockey: Chris Whiteley

Another visitor from down south with some potential on his side, perhaps one of the main contenders here. Won a trial at Deagon before missing by less than half a length to finish 3rd on debut at Toowoomba. Easily the best form lines going into the race here running 4th behind the likes of Boomsara and Plumaro. Wide draw but will probably sit just off pace and give himself every chance.

9. Gypsy Toff (Barrier 3)

Breeding: Toorak Toff x Aadelaidee

Trainer: Tom Button

Jockey: Nigel Seymour

Huge trial winner by double digits, putting the likes of Saqsaywaman and Hot Chocolate to the sword. Ran the 900m in a blistering 56.66, faster than the open trial on the same day. Very good effort in town on a wet track from barrier 14 doing plenty of work early. Could of easily faded but boxed on for 3rd behind a potential star in Shamurt. Very likely leader here, will certainly take catching.

10. Brook’s Pleasure (Barrier 7)

Breeding: Hinchinbrook x Startling Pleasure

Trainer: Jamie McConachy

Jockey: Nathan Day

Won 2 trials by an aggregate of 7 lengths before justifying a huge firming in the market on debut to score by 7.25 lengths. Struggling to find excuses for her last start however when beaten easily by Legal Ties and Shenron as a $1.18 shot. Led before fading dramatically over the 1100m trip, 1200 a huge query.

11. Diamond Account (Barrier 9)

Breeding: Albrecht x Brides Account

Trainer: John Wigginton

Jockey: Justin Stanley

Lucklessly ran into Brook’s Pleasure in a trial and found both Brooks Pleasure and Gypsy Toff in only 2 starts to date, placing in both but defeated by considerable margins. Finds both here again and drawn out wide. Won’t be able to go with them here but will win one soon enough.

12. Zloto (Barrier 6)

Breeding: Sidereus x Old Friends Gold

Trainer: Peter Fleming

Jockey: Chris McIver

Beaten by Diamond Account in a trial before being last all the way to finish 10 lengths off Shenron on debut. Found Brook’s Pleasure in a trial where she was beaten by 14.L lengths however her form improved when going to Townsville and dropping back to 1000m. Steps up in distance here, tough ask.

13. Saqsaywaman (Barrier 5)

Breeding: Mahisara x Snuffbox

Trainer: James Rundle

Jockey: Elyce Smith (a)

Form does not read overly well, yet to place in 4 starts. Another that will win one soon however, all of Saqsaywaman’s defeats have come at the hands of Flinders Hiway, Legal Ties and Gypsy Toff. Wanting an easier field, too much class here.

14. Amron (Barrier 14)

Breeding: Skilled x Jamaican Spur

Trainer: Chris Munce

Jockey: N/A

Beaten only 3 runners home in 3 Doomben trials, defeated by an aggregate of almost 24 lengths.

15. Serious Crime (Barrier 2)

Breeding: Sidereus x No More Crime

Trainer: John Pointon

Jockey: Wanderson D'Avila

Yet to start under $100 odds and 8th in both tries including a 17.75 length defeat to Gypsy Toff. Expecting big odds again.
