Spurcraft returns after throat surgery in Bribie

By Glenn Davis

Spurcraft’s reputation as one of the State’s fastest sprinters will be on the line when the gelding makes his comeback from throat surgery in the Listed Bribie Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

Spurcraft hasn’t raced since finishing second on a heavy track behind Toowoomba sprinter Tycoon Ace in the Bat Out Of Hell (900m) at the Gold Coast on May 4.

The six-year-old subsequently underwent a tie-back operation to correct a breathing problem which has plagued him throughout his career.

Trainer Charlotte White, a Clifton school teacher, rated the operation a success.

“He’s had a couple of jump outs and won them both and he’s as good as ever,” White said.

“When he was beaten in the Bat Out Of Hell he was standing back in the barriers and missed the start slightly.

“He had to be used up early to get to the front but it was still a great run considering it was a heavy track.”

Spurcraft has never missed a place in his 13-start career which has produced eight wins and five placings with prizemoney of almost $225,000.

The son of Jet Spur is not eligible for the Magic Millions and could head south if his form warrants a trip away.

“He’s not eligible for the Magic Millions so his next start will be in the Falvelon Quality in two weeks,” White said.

“I’ll see how he’s going at the time but I definitely haven’t ruled out taking him to Sydney as there’s not much around for him here at the moment.”

Spurcraft earned his reputation as one of the quickest horses in Queensland winning his way through restricted grades.

White threw him in the deep end in the Listed Chief De Beers at Doomben in May last year when he was still eligible for a Class Five and he almost pulled off a remarkable victory before being caught late by the David Vandyke-trained Gracida.

He won four of his next six starts which included victories over smart sprinters Tumbler, Mr Marbellouz and Malvern Estate.
