Breeding barn delay paying off for Volkoff

By Glenn Davis

Trainer Bryan Guy is hopeful the decision not to send former Perth sprinter Volkoff to the breeding barn this season can be further vindicated at Doomben on Saturday.

Volkoff will be chasing her third win from her past four starts when she aims for more Black Type in the Listed Legacy Fillies & Mares Classic (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Volkoff was a proven performer in the west winning two Stakes races including the Listed Miss Andretti at Ascot in January last year and is well weighted with 56.5kgs.

Volkoff’s owner Paul White left her in the care of Guy, who trains in partnership with son Daniel, after she failed to reach her reserve at the National Broodmare sale at the Gold Coast in June.

The decision not to send her to stud has been highly profitable with Volkoff winning twice and placing on another occasion from five appearances for Team Guy.

“It wasn’t a hard decision for the owner not to send her to stud as she’s racing too well,” Bryan Guy said.

The daughter of Time Thief took her record to 12 wins from 37 starts with prizemoney of almost $500,000 with her last start win over 1050 metres at Doomben on November 3.

She was previously beaten less than one length when runner-up to the Tony Sears-trained Hard Stride on a heavy track at Doomben last month.

Jockey Mark Du Plessis has ridden the seven-year-old in both Queensland wins and will be out to keep his record in tact when he partners her for a third time.

“She’s going well and has pulled up great after her last win,” Guy said.

“She’s working nicely and looks in great shape.”

Guy’s only reservation with Volkoff is whether she’ll run a strong 1200 metres.

“I’ve only had her for a handful of starts and if there’s a query it’s getting 1200 metres,” he said.

Guy is planning a further Black-Type assault with Volkoff during the TAB Summer Carnival.

“She’ll have her next start in the Bribie Handicap which is another Listed race on December 15 then she’ll run in the Listed Magic Millions Nudgee Stakes at Doomben on December 29,” he said.
