On return to scale jockey B. Thomson, rider of 3rd  placegetter, ARTHUR PORRIT, requested to see footage of the home straight with a view to lodging a protest against 1st placed MY GIRL POPPY (S Kaya) being declared the winner. After viewing the footage jockey Thomson elected to proceed. After hearing evidence from the relevant parties and viewing all available footage Stewards being of the opinion that although there was a shift in from MY GIRL POPPY near the 150m, and that ARTHUR PORRIT was hampered as a result, the amount of ground lost by that gelding in the incident was not in excess of the 1½ lengths margin which separated the two runners at the finish of the race and subsequently dismissed the protest and declaring correct weight on the Judge’s semaphored numbers. Jockey S Kaya later pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a) in that near the 150m he directed his mount MY GIRL POPPY inwards across the heels of the tiring AKILEOS (W D’Avila) and in doing so encroached on the running of ARTHUR PORRIT which was taken inwards and lost momentum. FOX STREET (C Whiteley) which was racing to the inside of ARTHUR PORRIT was also inconvenienced in this incident. Jockey Kaya’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 10 days to commence at midnight on Thursday April 16th 2020 up to and including Sunday April 26th 2020. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account Jockey Kaya’s guilty plea and recent record in relation to the rule.

Travelled comfortably in front to the 500m where App. E Cass once again commenced to ride the filly hard in an attempt to increase the margin. Tired noticeably over the concluding stages to be narrowly beaten at the finish. Stewards questioned App. Cass in relation to her riding of the filly, in the presence of her master Mr. F Wieland. Ms. Cass, who is currently under the guidance of a Racing Queensland Rider Advisory mentor was advised that in Stewards’ opinion she would have been better served riding the filly more patiently from the 500m to the home turn which would have left something in reserve to enable it to finish off the race. Both Ms. Cass and Mr. Wieland were in agreement with Stewards. Trainer Mr. R Chillemi advised his instructions were to lead if able to do so without undue effort and if not to try to obtain cover in the run. Mr Chillemi did express disappointment and agreed with Stewards summation.
