Supplementary Report

From  SCTC, 26.5.19 – Race 1

Following the running of this event, the gelding WHISKEY ARCHER collapsed and subsequently passed away and stewards ordered an autopsy be performed.  The results indicated that the horse was suffering from a pre-existing heart condition.  The autopsy  concluded that the cause of death was a heart attack. Urine and blood samples were also taken and have returned negative results.

SWISS RUBY – Declared a late scratching at 1.31 pm when unable to be loaded into the barriers. Subsequent to the event all monies invested on the filly were ordered to be refunded with the following deductions applicable.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by jockey L. Tarrant, rider of the 2nd placegetter, STONEFISH, against BIRKIN BLACK  being declared the winner alleging interference in the home straight. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol video stewards established that whilst BIRKIN BLACK did shift in over the final 200m and dictated the line of STONEFISH and also made contact on 1 occasion, stewards were satisfied that the interference suffered was not sufficient to affect the half-neck margin.  Stewards also took into account BIRKIN BLACK had improved from behind STONEFISH in the home straight,  and  given the manner in which the horse finished the race off, dismissed the objection and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge’s placings.

MANHATTANITE – Obliged to alter course near the 400m to secure clear running.  Stewards questioned Mr M. Lakey, trainer of the winner, regarding the seemingly  improved performance. He indicated that, in his opinion, the horse appreciated the step up in distance to 1600m today, and whilst he was somewhat surprised by the performance, indicated that at the horse’s most recent start it had been unlucky in that it was held up for clear running during the early stages of the home straight.  Stewards noted the explanation.
