Race 1 – SCTC Atrium Bar Class 5 H’cap – 1600m

JUNCTION – Jumped away awkwardly and made contact with the barrier partition. Overraced in the early stages whilst being restrained to obtain cover and continued to overrace until the 800m due to the slow tempo set in the event. Forced wider after being bumped passing the 500m.  Laid in under pressure in the home straight.  Stewards questioned apprentice C. Bayliss regarding the tactics adopted on his mount which in previous events has led. He was asked whether he had been instructed to lead.  Apprentice Bayliss indicated he had been given no specific instructions as to where to settle the horse. He stated  he had been advised that  as there were some concerns the horse may not run out a strong 1600m that he should attempt to come out of the barriers quite neutral and settle the horse where it was comfortable.  He indicated that he elected very shortly after the start to steady and obtain cover and the horse resented this and commenced to race with its head in the air.  Apprentice Bayliss was further asked whether in hindsight he would have been better served leading and he indicated that he did not feel that this would have made any difference in the gelding’s  finishing effort as he was firmly of the opinion that the horse did not run out a strong 1600m.   A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

KINGS FULL – Jockey M. Hellyer reported he had not intended leading, he indicated that he had  crossed runners to the inside and then steadied the pace with a view to  allow another runner to improve around him and  cross which would have afforded him cover.

LI’L RODGE – Shifted out near the 500m to improve and in doing so bumped another runner.

CATCH ME LATER – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
Race 2 – Parklands Tavern QTIS 2yo H’cap – 1400m

KARENO – Slow to begin. Jockey M. Du Plessis reported his mount overraced in the early stages. Lost its near fore plate in running.

AQUAJAK – Raced in restricted room passing the 1200m.

CONCEALED DYNAMITE – Laid out under pressure in the home straight. Trainer L. Ross was questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance.  He indicated, in his opinion, the horse raced better on today’s firmer surface, and whilst he had expected a forward showing, was a little surprised with the win.  He also added that the step up in distance to 1400m and being able to obtain an easy lead had assisted the horse’s performance, along with dropping to 51 kilograms with the claim of apprentice Tomlinson.  Stewards noted the explanation.

FIORENTE STAR – Raced greenly throughout.

Race 3 – Butler McDermott Lawyers Maiden H’cap  - 1400m

MISS UNDERSTANDING – Jumped away awkwardly, and shortly after the start clipped heels and blundered. Race 4 –TAB Class 3 H’cap – 1200m

CASINO GARDENS – Slow to begin.

DREAM KISSES - Had to be restrained from heels near the 900m when the pace slackened and shifted in, making contact with the running rail. Jockey B. Stewart dropped his whip after passing the 200m.  Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Bumped by another runner near the 150m.

AZIZ JAMIL COUREUR – Whilst overracing passing the 800m was awkwardly placed at heels and had to be restrained.

Race 7 – Wotso QTIS 3yo CG&E H’cap – 1000m

On return to scale a protest was lodged by  Jockey Griffin  3rd placegetter, FUJI FLYER, against 2nd HINANO being declared 2nd placegetter,  alleging interference in the home straight.  After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the  stewards patrol video,  it was established that FUJI FLYER, after having obtained a run to the outside of HINANO, had to be steadied near the 300m and shift back to the inside when HINANO shifted out under pressure. It was further found that near the 100m after obtaining a run to the inside of HINANO, FUJI FLYER was again hampered and its rider obliged to stop riding when HINANO shifted in under pressure. Stewards were satisfied that the interference suffered in these 2 incidents were sufficient to alter the short-half head margin between  the 2 horses at the finish of the race and upheld the objection and correct weight was given on the placings:  No. 3 – Lucky Fix   No. 4 – Fuji Flyer   No. 9 – Hinano  No. 5 – Angels Of Fenway. At a subsequent inquiry, apprentice T. Williams was reprimanded for failing to stop riding and straighten her mount when it shifted ground on 2 occasions in the home straight.

HINANO – Slow to begin. Lost its near fore plate in running.

ANGELS OF FENWAY – Slow to begin.

CHOCOLATE OREO – Jockey E. Ljung  reported her mount after travelling well in a favourable position throughout the event in her opinion proved very disappointing when placed under pressure in the home straight, and recommended to connections to add blinkers to the horse’s gear prior to its next race start.

MAJAQUA – A  post race veterinary examination found the horse to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance, results of an ECG examination must be provided,   and the horse must perform satisfactorily in an official trial prior to racing again.
