Race 1: SPIRIT OF BOOM QTIS 2YO H’CAP – 1100M

BOLD EOS – Bumped on jumping away. Steadied whilst racing keenly near the 600m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

MAGIC PALACE – Hung out rounding the home turn.

QUART POT – Shifted out abruptly under hard riding passing the 100m.

VIRGINIA DREAM – Trainer T. Edmonds was fined $200 for the late declaration of R. Maloney as rider. As R. Maloney was to be overweight, M. Cahill was substituted as rider. Stewards accepted jockey Maloney’s explanation with respect to him being unable to fulfil his engagement.

HOWWONDERFULLIFEIS – Began awkwardly. Apprentice B. Nothdurft reported that his saddle shifted to the near side on jumping away which placed him at some disadvantage for the remainder of the race.

TIMELY BEL – Bumped on jumping away.

Race 2: AG RIGGING FILLIES & MARES BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1300M

The start of this race was delayed when CRUSHER became fractious and reared over in the barriers, resulting in it becoming cast for a period of time. The horse was removed from the barriers and declared a late scratching at 1.10pm on veterinary advice. On the announcement of correct weight Stewards ordered that all monies invested on CRUSHER be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

28 cents in the dollar for the win #2
22 cents in the dollar for place of winner #2
23 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #8
25 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #12

Trainer B. Currie was advised that the mare will require a veterinary clearance, and a further barrier certificate prior to resuming racing.

SPLITTER – Laid in in the early stages of the home straight.

LIGHT UP THE ROOM – Slow to begin. When questioned by Stewards in relation to his riding in the home straight, jockey Brad Stewart reported that when entering the home straight a run presented between SPLITTER and BOILING which he attempted to obtain, however as his mount had a tendency to lay in at that point, he was reluctant to take advantage of that run. He went on to say that when able to secure clear running passing the 100m, the filly ran on reasonably. Stewards noted the explanation.

ROSIE POSIE – Had some difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight.

ANGEL DANE – Slow to begin. Held up rounding the home turn, and was then further held up in the early stages of the home straight when attempting to secure clear running to the outside of the heels of ROSIE POSIE, however when that runner shifted out, ANGEL DANE was disappointed for a run and checked from heels for some distance. The mare was again disappointed for a run and held up badly over the final 50m and, as a result, went to the line without being fully tested.

BOILING – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

HOLD ON – Hung out rounding the home turn.

STAR ADELE – Slow to begin. Raced in restricted room for some distance near the 1000m and, as a result, brushed the running rail.

Race 3: GEMLIFE COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1300M

HANG – Made contact with another running on jumping away.

BEACON – Raced wide without cover throughout.

SO SPIRITED – Raced wide throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

MARKSFIELD – Raced wide throughout. Disappointed for a run inside the final 100m and was steadied.

ALL FROM SCRAP – Had difficulty securing clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight, and then had a tendency to hang in after securing clear running. Lost the off-hind plate in running.

PRESSWAY – Made contact with another runner on jumping away. Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 1200m. Held up rounding the home turn before shifting to the outside in the home straight to secure clear running.

REAL EGO – Lost the off-fore and off-hind plates in running.

Race 4: BARRIER REEF POOLS QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1200M

DEFENCE MISSILE – After being caught wide in the early stages, the gelding was ridden aggressively before obtaining a position one out one back passing the 800m.

SHAMURT – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn. Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 150m.

ROCKBEAT – Connections advised that from the outside barrier it would be the intention for the gelding to be ridden in the second half of the field in an endeavour to find cover. The gelding was ridden accordingly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

SPIRIT’S PRIDE – Steadied from heels approaching the 700m. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

MYSTIC MIST – Steadied near the 300m when placed in restricted room when USMANOV was taken wider on the track by another runner.

VERANES – Stood flat-footed at the start and lost ground.

USMANOV – Began awkwardly. Got its head in the air whilst being restrained near the 900m, and shifted wider on the track for a short distance. Stewards questioned Apprentice J. Guthmann-Chester and Trainer T. Edmonds in relation to the seemingly poor performance. Apprentice Guthmann-Chester advised that the colt travelled comfortably during the race, however when it was asked to improve into the race from the 800m it failed to stretch out as he had expected, and from that point was under pressure and proved disappointing in the home straight. He went on to say that, in his opinion, the colt was not suited to the firm racing surface today. Mr. Edmonds was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance and indicated that he would now consider the colt’s current racing preparation, and may also consider gelding the horse. Stewards noted the explanations. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be exhibiting a poor post-race recovery.

OUR ECHO – Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 150m.

UNO AMOR – Lost the off-hind plate in running.

Following the running of this race the track was upgraded from a Good 4 to a Good 3.

Race 5: MOORE TRAILERS TOOWOOMBA GUINEAS – 1625M

PARTNERSHIP – Raced wide without cover throughout.

BAREFOOT – Improved onto heels passing the 800m, was steadied, and lost some ground. Laid in rounding the home turn and in the home straight and proved somewhat difficult to ride out.

ZOUCARA – Steadied to avoid heels shortly after the start. Raced with its head in the air whilst being restrained in the early stages.

CRAIGLEA VIRTUE – Slow to begin.

COUNTESS DE GALVEZ – Jumped in the air at the start, and then failed to muster early speed and lost ground. Stewards questioned jockey J. Oliver in relation to his riding and the tactics adopted on the filly, and in particular his decision to circle the field after beginning slowly to obtain a leading position near the 1000m when there appeared to be an opportunity to obtain a trailing position in the race. Jockey Oliver advised that his intentions were to obtain a forward position and, after beginning slowly, he was of the view that with the slow early tempo he would be in a position to improve into the race around the field without overly pressuring the filly, which would have enabled him to comply with the instructions. He added however that once he made the decision to improve, the runners to his inside quickened the tempo and, as a result, he was forced to work harder than he had anticipated to secure the leading position. Whilst noting the explanation tendered by jockey Oliver, Stewards advised that, in their opinion, he had erred in the early stages by not attempting to secure a trailing position behind MYWIFESAIDNO, and further after making the decision to allow his mount to stride forward he had erred in not maintaining a trailing position behind SOGNI rather than continuing to pressure his mount forward to obtain the leading position. Stewards also advised jockey Oliver that, in their opinion, his riding had not led to a breach of the rules, however his riding fell below the standard expected at metropolitan meetings.

GEM DEALER – Improved onto heels passing the 800m, was steadied, and lost some ground.

NICHOLAS – Jockey Brad Stewart accidentally dropped his whip passing the 300m.

Race 6: K&R PLUMBING SUPPLIES BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP – 1625M

REIBY THE RED – Steadied when racing keenly onto heels for some distance passing the 1300m.

MAGSTOCK – Slow to begin.

MURAQABA – Slow to begin.

GREEN EMPIRE – The gelding, which became fractious en route to the track, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Held up at heels for a short distance in the early stages of the home straight.

PONYTALES – Raced 3 wide without cover for the majority.

FAIRLIGHTING – Tightened for room on jumping away and lost ground.

FRANCISCA – Raced 3 wide with cover for the majority. The mare was treated post-race for mild heat stress and recovered.

MONEY TALK – Raced keenly in the early stages. Lost the off-fore plate in running.

Race 7: TAB TOOWOOMBA CUP – 2000M

SINGING – Jockey M. McGillivray reported that his mount felt short in its action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be striding short in both forelegs.

FIRST CRUSH – Began awkwardly.

INGEEGOODBE – Raced wide without cover throughout.

DECONSTRUCTED – Jockey J. Lloyd reported that despite racing wide, his mount failed to finish the race off as he had expected from the 800m and proved very disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

Race 8: AUDI CENTRE TOOWOOMBA WEETWOOD H’CAP – 1200M

CELLARMAN – Disappointed for a run over the concluding stages and went to the line without being fully tested over the final 50m.

TYCOON ACE- Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

APOLOBOOM- Raced wide throughout.

TYZONE – Bumped heavily on jumping away and lost ground.

UPSTART PRIDE – Bumped heavily by another runner shortly after the start. Raced wide with cover throughout.

MALVERN ESTATE – Bumped heavily on jumping away. Raced wide with cover throughout.

IN HIS STRIDE – As J. Orman was to be overweight, M. Du Plessis was substituted as rider. J. Orman was fined $300. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Laid in rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight.

HARD STRIDE – Raced 4 wide without cover throughout.

Race 9: TOOWOOMBA PLASTICS CLASS 6 PLATE – 1100M

SNITCH – Bumped on jumping away. Tightened for room shortly after the start and lost ground.

CAPITAL CONNECTION – Bumped on jumping away.

CURDLED – Had some difficulty securing clear running in the home straight and near the 50m was disappointed for a run and went to the line without being fully tested.

JUST ORM – Made contact with the barrier partition on jumping away. Raced wide without cover throughout.

PERFECT DARE – Raced wide without cover throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which tailed off, revealed no apparent abnormalities.

COOL DRAFTS – Raced wide throughout.

Following the declaration of correct weight, Stewards were notified by the Judges that an error had occurred with the semaphoring of the 4th placegetter. It was identified that, due to an inputting error, number 5 (CURDLED) was semaphored when in fact number 15 (COOL DRAFTS) had been placed 4th. After confirming the correct placings Stewards, acting under AR. 214(4)(b), amended the placings accordingly. In light of this incident, Stewards will ask the Toowoomba Turf Club to conduct a review into the judging process.
