Race 1 Super QRIS Maiden Handicap – 1000 Metres 10 Starters
HULAKAI was scratched at 8.30am when it was discovered that the declared rider Ms E Simmons was still in Toowoomba having missed the bus. SIGHTLESS and EMMAJAYNE were scratched at sign in time when no riders were available. Toowoomba stewards were advised of the matter and trainer S Godfrey was told to make a written complaint to Downs stewards with regard to her failure to honour her riding commitments.
An enquiry into an incident at about the 800m found that CANADIAN LYNX (C Prow), PAPAL REASON (T Matsuno), TODD’S TORMENT (R Hammond) and SWAPPED (T Richardson) all eased when TIERNON (S Oates) drifted in approaching the 800m turn. S Oates was issued with a reprimand and advised to keep better control of his mounts.
Race 2 Open Handicap – 1000 Metres 6 Starters.
A protest was lodged by T Austin, the rider of ACE OF SPADES (NZ), against ROYAL CHANDON (NZ) (O Galea) being declared the winner alleging interference in the straight. After taking evidence form all parties, on their own observations and after viewing the video stewards dismissed the objection. An enquiry was held into alleged interference to KENTUCKY FLAME (R Bellert) and VALPECULAR (C Prow) approaching the 800m corner. Jockey Shane Oates (BOLD COUNTY) was charged with careless riding (AR 137(a)) for allowing his horse to shift in when not sufficiently clear. He was found guilty and suspended from riding in races up to and including 21/7/2001.
Race 3 Class 3 Handicap – 1200 Metres 10 Starters
LORD KILLOWEN was scratched at 8.30am when Ms E Simmons was found to be still in Toowoomba and no other rider was available. TRUNCHEON (NZ) was scratched at sign in time when no rider was available. SHE’S A BENNY blundered as the gates opened dislodging T Matsuno. T Matsuno suffered som bruising to the back and left arm and was examined by the club doctor who advised him to visit his own doctor if any soreness persisted.
Race 4 Class 5 – 1200 Metres 4 Starters
