GENERAL:
Apprentice J. Kropp was indisposed due to injury, and Apprentice A. Kitson indisposed due to transport difficulties. Replacements for both riders were made as per the steward’s race day summary.
Race 1: National Australia Bnk Class 4 Handicap – 1090 metres:
1st – Monte Primo 2nd - Countershy 3rd - Kalman 4th - High Dee
COUNTERSHY (D. McWhinney) was slow to begin.
HIGH DEE (S. Kennedy) and COUNTERSHY both race wide throughout.
A post race veterinary examination of SHE’S GOT GAME (I. Coombes) revealed the mare to have suffered a bleeding attack from both nostrils. Trainer K. Munce was advised that the mare would be prevented from racing for three months under the provisions of AR 53A.
Race 2: Ulton Group Maiden Plate – 1090 metres:
1st – Umhlanga Rocks 2nd – Midnightmare 3rd – Beach Kings 4th - Shovise
Apprentice D. McWhinney the rider of 5th placegetter ZAHOO was reprimanded for failing to weigh in.
During the preliminary MR MAGORIUM dislodged its rider, Apprentice S. Kennedy, and galloped for a short distance. Prior to the start both rider and horse where inspected by the ambulance officers and the veterinary surgeon respectively and cleared to take their place in the event. The connections of MR MAGORIUM were advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding’s manners.
SHOVISE (K. Mizobe) began awkwardly.
UMHLANGA ROCKS (I. Coombes) was slow to begin and shortly after the start was tightened for room between MR MAGORIUM (S. Kennedy) and MIDNIGHTMARE (D. Gill) which shifted in.
SHOVISE raced wide throughout.
When questioned, Apprentice S. Kennedy stated that MR MAGORIUM resented the kickback when racing in behind other runners in the middle stages and as a result lost ground at that point in the race.
When questioned, Apprentice K. Mizobe stated that in his opinion the track was firmer wider out and given that SHOVISE was reluctant to race in behind other runners he elected to maintain a position wider on the track rather then moving SHOVISE closer to the fence.
When questioned, jockey L. Appo stated that I’M ALL YOURS failed to handle that sand track and therefore was reluctant to stretch out.
Race 3: Brooklyn Park Organic Olive Groves Class B Handicap – 1212 metres:
1st – Canadian Chief 2nd - Tendane 3rd – Sagheer 4th – Hayil And Hearty
Both MISS JOBURG and BERRIMA BOOGIE were declared late scratchings at 12:15pm due to no other rider being available.
LEGAL TECHNICALITY (I. Coombes) and TENDANE (D. McWhinney) were tightened upon jumping between LANZSAR (C. Kearney) and HAYIL AND HEARTY (D. Gill) which shifted out.
CHASING DREAMS (C. Eaton) knuckled upon jumping almost dislodging its rider and as a consequence lost ground as the start was effected.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of FLAMING NOTE, Apprentice K. Mizobe stated that this was the gelding’s first race on a sand track and that it appeared to resent the kickback when racing in behind other runners. App. Mizobe also stated that the gelding was better suited over longer distances. The explanation was noted.
Race 4: Ulton Group Cup Open Handicap – 1212 metres:
1st – Suntanned 2nd – Pickastar 3rd – Red Roller 4th – De Bono
HANDY HERO was declared a late scratching at 12:15pm due to no other rider being available.
SUNTANNED (K. Mizobe) and LEVERAGE (I. Coombes) brushed upon jumping.
ROLLER DRUM (L. Appo) and LEVERAGE both raced wide throughout.
DE BONO (C. Eaton) and LEVERAGE brushed on several occasions in the straight.
Race 5: Professional Investment Services Class 2 Handicap – 1380 metres:
1st – Canadian Chief 2nd – Quite Stylish 3rd – Red Tsar 4th – Storm Buck
After winning race 3 on the program CANADIAN CHIEF was penalised 1.5kg and as a result was re-handicapped at 57kg in this event instead of its original handicapped weight of 55.5kg. An announcement to this effect was made by the Race Caller prior to the opening of betting.
QUITE STYLISH (D. Gill) which was slow to begin was tightened for room, shortly after the start, between FLYING MOSSMAN (I. Coombes) and NONNA MIA (C. Eaton) and as a consequence lost considerable ground.
Near the 1200m FLYING MOSSMAN was inconvenience by NONNA MIA which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.
FLYING MOSSMAN and NONNA MIA both raced wide throughout.
CANADIAN CHIEF (S. Kennedy) shifted out under pressure in the straight.
