SPATHONIS, which was late arriving on course due to transportation difficulties, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.
Correct weight was delayed to allow apprentice C. Schmidt, the rider of 3rd placegetter ROAD TRAIN ROSIE, to view the photo finish. After viewing the photo finish, C. Schmidt was satisfied with the Judge’s placings and correct weight was semaphored.
BEAU D’ARGENT (D. Missen) was slow to begin.
KOBI CREEK (T. Treichel) began awkwardly and raced greenly in the early stages.
KOBI CREEK hung out rounding the home turn.
Approaching and passing the winning post TREVLYN’S COL (S. Drake) had to be restrained to avoid the heels of RATHGIBBON (B. Ainsworth), which shifted in under pressure. Apprentice Ainsworth was issued with a reprimand.
Race 2: TRADE ALLIANCE 2014 CLASS 4 H’CAP – 1400M
SON OF COCO (T. Williams) stood flat-footed at the start and lost considerable ground. Trainer W. Walters was advised that SON OF COCO must trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to being permitted to race again.
KING’S SHILLING (N. Yamada) and BARONESS ZEENA (T. Treichel) were slow to begin.
Leaving the 1000m BARONESS ZEENA shifted out and made contact with HYPOTHESIS (L. Rolls) on a number of occasions.
STROMBO (B. Ainsworth) was held up and unable to improve rounding the home turn until entering the home straight.
BARONESS ZEENA shifted in under pressure near the 100m, making contact with HYPOTHESIS.
Race 3: CCP COMPOSITES 2014 RATING 62 H’CAP – 1650M
Connections advised that it would be the intention to have THAIDAY (L. Rolls) ridden in a rearward position. The horse was ridden accordingly.
The start of this race was effected manually.
ZAHA SECRET (S. Drake) and WIND DANCER (J. Greacen) were slow to begin.
GENGHIS (T. Treichel) began awkwardly.
AMONUTE (B. Looker) made the turn out of the straight on the first occasion awkwardly and shifted out forcing NUITS ST GEORGES (J. Morris) wider on the track.
Approaching the turn out of the straight on the first occasion, ZAHA SECRET blundered and shifted out, making contact with WIND DANCER, which then hung out, shifting wider on the track.
KRISTROM (N. Masuda) raced wide in the early and middle stages.
Race 4: DOLPHIN/BARRIER REEF POOL 2014 CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1100M
SPLASH AND DASH (C. Schmidt) lost ground at the start when tightened for room between GYPSY’S REVENGE (J. Greacen) and RAINBOW MAGIC (J. Kokotajlo), both of which shifted ground.
SHE WHO KNOWS (J. Morris) was slow to begin.
Stewards questioned S. Drake, the rider of RIP RIP WOODCHIP, in relation to the tactics adopted on that gelding in the early and middle stages. S. Drake explained that she pressured the horse to find a position closer to the rail in the early stages, however when OVER THE CHOICE (T. Treichel) and MAN OF STEALTH (B. Looker) both improved to her inside, she was then unable to restrain RIP RIP WOODCHIP and as such she was obliged to race three wide for the remainder of the event. Stewards noted her explanation.
Race 5: ASTRAL POOL 2014 MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200M
BLUE PRINCE (S. Fawke), which was fractious during its preliminary and made heavy contact with the outside running rail, was examined by the veterinary surgeon prior to the start and was cleared to race. Trainer K. Deacon was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding’s parading manners.
CASINO CEES (T. Treichel) was slow to begin.
MISHANI TROY (R. Vigar) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Apprentice R. Vigar, the rider of MISHANI TROY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear, resulting in MOON PALACE (B. Looker) having to be severely checked when tightened for room on to EYE OF THE STORM (J. Greacen), and that a short distance later he continued to allow his mount to shift in under hard riding, resulting in EYE OF THE STORM having to be eased from the heels of MISHANI TROY. Apprentice Vigar’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday 22 June and expire at midnight on Wednesday 2 July 2014.
Approaching the 100m SKYLAR’S STAR (C. Schmidt) improved onto the heels of the tiring EYE OF THE STORM and had to be checked and alter course.
Race 6: BARRIER REEF POOLS 2014 BEAUDESERT CUP OPEN H’CAP – 1400M
Trainer L. Ross advised that it would be the intention to have CUDDLESOME lead today. After being slow to begin, CUDDLESOME then overraced in the early stages of the event before being ridden forward leaving the 800m. As a result of this, CUDDLESOME raced wide for the majority of the event.
NO WIN NO WINE (B. Looker) was slow to begin.
Apprentice C. Schmidt reported that it was not her intention to lead on SPATHA today, however, with the addition of blinkers today and after beginning well the gelding found itself in the lead and she was content to remain in that position.
RACE 7: AUSTRALASIAN SOLVENTS & CHEMICALS COMPANY 2014 CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1400M
Correct weight was delayed to allow T. Treichel, the rider of 2nd placegetter YARRANDI, to view the stewards’ patrol footage to determine whether he had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner CHILLI BEACH (J. Morris) near the 1100m. After viewing the video, jockey Treichel indicated that he did not wish to proceed and correct weight was declared on the Judge’s placings.
CHILLI BEACH and KARAKA STORM (S. Fawke) were slow to begin.
ONLY AMOTHER COULD (C. Schmidt) and MARTINGALE (J. Johnson) began awkwardly.
Approaching the 900m WITHOUT GRIEF (B. Cornell), which was overracing, had to be steadied when crowded for room between CHILLI BEACH and MARTINGALE, which shifted in slightly. FLYING TIGER (J. Greacen), which was following, was also steadied in this incident. Apprentice J. Johnson, the rider of MARTINGALE, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. WITHOUT GRIEF continued to overrace and approaching the 700m had to be steadied from the heels of MARTINGALE.
TITANOMAGNETITE (L. Rolls), YARRANDI (T. Treichel) and SINGARAJA (C. Eaton) raced wide throughout.
Near the 400m KARAKA STORM shifted out, making contact with SAYORI (J. Kokotajlo), which in turn shifted out on to WITHOUT GRIEF, which also shifted out, becoming awkward on the heels of YARRANDI. Apprentice S. Fawke, the rider of KARAKA STORM, was admonished and advised to show greater care when shifting ground.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of WITHOUT GRIEF, which finished tailed off, rider B. Cornell stated that as a result of receiving some interference during the race, the gelding raced fiercely, which in his opinion was a telling factor on the horse and as such he did not place the horse under any pressure over the final stages of the event.
