GENERAL:

Stewards yesterday, Friday, 11th August 2006, inquired into the reason for Apprentice S. Kaya being dislodged from CHAKA MAKAKA on the turn at the 400 metres in Race 4, the Captain Cook Cruises Class 3 Plate, 1400 metres, at the Cairns Jockey Club meeting on 1st July 2006. After taking evidence from Apprentice S. Kaya and Jockey K. Rockett, the rider of ERRATUM, stewards were unable to determine conclusively whether any one rider was responsible for the incident. However, Jockey Rockett was advised to exercise care in future.

Due to an oversight, the Race Book omitted to note that Races 5 and 6 were non-claiming events.

Late riding changes:

As Jockey R. Ryan was indisposed, the following substitutions were made: Race 2, J. Felix to ride LOCK OUT; Race 4, K. Brady to ride SURROGATE SON; Race 6, J. Dickinson to ride MAGRITTE.

When D. Crossland was to be overweight in Races 5 and 7, the following substitutions were made: Race 5, S. Morris to ride LOST PRINCE; Race 7, D. Adam to ride EXIT BRASS. D. Crossland pleaded guilty to a charge under A.R. 120(b) of accepting rides for which he was subsequently found to be overweight, and was fined a total of $400. Jockey Crossland was warned that a similar breach of the rules may lead to action being taken against his licence.

Race 1: Ireland’s Class B Handicap – 1000m
1st – PLACID BOY 2nd – VICTORY BEAU 3rd – EDINBURGH 4th – PRINCE CHALLENGER

After being placed in the barriers PEARL MONARCH (Apprentice P. Edwards) became fractious, reared and was cast over the adjoining stall. PEARL MONARCH was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

At the start EDINBURGH (Apprentice P. D’Addona) shifted out and bumped OUR SOUTHERN STAR (F. Edwards), which in turn was taken out and dictated FINAL THOUGHT (Apprentice S. Kaya) out onto the heels of OLD KILMORE (I. Toward). In the incident FINAL THOUGHT was checked and OUR SOUTHERN STAR became unbalanced.

Jockey S. Morris, the rider of VICTORY BEAU, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A. R. 137(a), in that near the 900 metres he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting in when insufficiently clear of PLACID BOY (J. Stopps), which was checked and taken in onto PRINCE CHALLENGER (S. Wynne), which was checked and dictated in onto the hindquarters of OLD KILMORE (I. Toward). In the incident PRINCE CHALLENGER and PLACID BOY lost their positions. Jockey S. Morris was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight tonight, 12th August 2006, up to and including Friday, 1st September 2006 (5 NQ meetings).

In the straight OUR SOUTHERN STAR (F. Edwards) was unable to obtain clear running until after the 200 metres.

Race 2: Sofitel Reef Casino Maiden Plate - 1250m
1st – UP TO MISCHIEF 2nd – GEORGE 3rd – CANNY DODGE 4th – STRICTLY A DANGER

FUN IN THE SUN (D. Crossland) was slow to begin.

For the first 100 metres DARK INTENT (I. Toward) raced very ungenerously.

Approaching the 1000 metres STRICTLY A DANGER (Apprentice S. Kaya), which was racing ungenerously, shifted out at the same time as CAPE KINJITE (D. Armstrong), which was racing to its outside, shifted in. STRICTLY A DANGER then shifted in away from CAPE KINJITE and inconvenienced SIR RASH (K. Rockett).

At the 200 metres STRICTLY A DANGER was unable to obtain clear running and was shifted out to improve, then just prior to the winning post shifted in and bumped WHAT’S HIS DANE (J. Stopps).

Race 3: Gary Riches Builder Class 6 Plate – 1250m.
1st – POSSIBILITIES 2nd – SILVERSTEIN 3rd – MIAMI ICE 4th – SUPER SLIDER

SILVERSTEIN (K. Brady) was slow to begin.

At about the 900 metres SPOT OF TROUBLE (G. Kliese) laid in placing SUPER SLIDER (K. Rockett) in restricted room, resulting in SUPER SLIDER shifting in and inconveniencing MIAMI ICE (F. Edwards), which also was obliged to race in restricted room. Jockey G. Kliese was advised to exercise more care.

From the home turn until about the 150 metres MIAMI ICE (F. Edwards) was held up and unable to obtain clear running to the inside of SUPER SLIDER (K. Rockett).

Race 4: – The Good Guys QTIS Class 3 Plate – 1250m
1st – DIGOS 2nd – LIL’ MISS INNOCENT 3rd – LADY RAFFLES 4th – I’LL BE GONE

SURROGATE SON (K. Brady) was slow to begin.

Approaching the turn near the 1000 metres RUHLMANN (S. Morris) shifted out and brushed WHATSATWATONVILLE (Apprentice P. Edwards).

On the turn near the 1000 metres SURROGATE SON (K. Brady) shifted out and bumped SHINKANSEN EXPRESS (J. Stopps), which was taken out abruptly.

Making the turn near the 1000 metres LUBERON (D. Adam) raced ungenerously.

Leaving the crossing at the 700 metres LUBERON (D. Adam), which continued to over-race and proved difficult to control, shifted in, obliging RUHLMANN (S. Morris) to race in an awkward position on the heels of LADY RAFFLES (F. Edwards) and having to be steadied.

Rounding the home turn TWO TO CLANGO (W. Kenning) shifted in and crowded LUBERON (D. Adam), which had to be eased.

Following the race the Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that WOODIDIERE had struck its head in the wash bay and sustained a cut to the lower lip.
Race 5: – The Cairns Post Newmarket Handicap – 1400 m
1st – SAM’S DREAM 2nd – BICARB 3rd – JAR JAR BINKS 4th – EDGEWANA

When D. Crossland was overweight, S. Morris was substituted as the rider of LOST PRINCE.

For some distance after leaving the barriers AWESOME KNIGHT (J. Dickinson) raced ungenerously and refused to settle.

On two occasions near the 50m SAM’S DREAM (S. Wynne) shifted out to improve and bumped LOST PRINCE (S. Morris). Jockey S. Wynne was told that in future she would be expected to make a greater effort to keep her mounts straight.

Following the race Jockey I. Toward reported that in his opinion MY SALADDDIN was sore after leaving the 800 metres and he did not ride the horse out thereafter. Subsequently the Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding had lost a shoe during the race and was severely lame in the off foreleg. Trainer Mr D. Paradise was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be provided prior to MY SALADDIN being permitted to race again.

Race 6: – Trafalgar Corporate Cairns Cup – 2100m

When D. Crossland was overweight, D. Adam was substituted as the rider of EXIT BRASS.
