In the early stages HORBURY TERRACE (C. Whiteley) raced greenly.
Making the turn near the 500 metres COLUMBIA QUEEN (F. Edwards), which was having its first start this way of going, hung out badly, despite the efforts of its rider, taking KANEFIRE (App. A. McCABE) out across the running of PRECOUNTED (I. Toward), which was tightened for room between KANEFIRE and BLUE BAYOU (D. Green), clipped the heels of BLUE BAYOU, was checked and blundered. MANUSCRIPT (G. Cullen) was slow to begin and then over-raced in the early and
middle stages.
Jockey D. Simmons pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in
that near the 500 metres he permitted WHAT’S YOUR ANGLE to shift in when
insufficiently clear of RANMOORO (P. Cullen), which was checked and lost its
rightful running. Jockey Simmons was suspended from riding in races for a period to
commence at midnight on Monday, 7th September 2009, up to and including midnight
on Monday, 14th September 2009, (3 NQ and Capricornia meetings).

Race 4: Cairns Airport Class 4 Handicap – 960 metres
1st – THE CHANSTER 2nd – SUNNY WILL 3rd – TAIKHAN 4th – DRAGONISI
The start was delayed when THE CHANSTER (G. Kliese) proved difficult to load into the barriers.

Near the 800 metres PEOPLE’S CHOICE (C. Whiteley) was steadied when tightened for room between LANGFURY (F. Edwards) and ON THE ROSTER (App. A. McCabe), which was taken out by TAIKHAN (D. Green). A short distance later PEOPLE’S CHOICE commenced to over-race.
At about the 600 metres ON THE ROSTER (App. A. McCabe) raced in restricted room to the inside of TAIKHAN (D. Green).
At the entrance to the straight FORCE AND EFFECT (L. Dillon) was momentarily held up and unable to obtain clear running.
Approaching the 200 metres CAPITAL FLOW (P. Falvey), which was weakening, was tightened for room between TAIKHAN (D. Green) and FORCE AND EFFECT (L. Dillon), which shifted out slightly to improve.
At the 200 metres LAKEFUL (S. Morris) had to steady off the heels of FORCE AND EFFECT (L. Dillon).
SUNNY WILL (I. Toward) and LANGFURY (F. Edwards) raced wide throughout.
Jockey G. Kliese was given the benefit of the doubt as to whether his use of the whip on THE CHANSTER over the final 200 metres was in breach of A.R.137A(5).

From the 200 metres until the 100 metres ANDOMAN was held up when attempting to take a narrow run to the inside of BURGUNDY PRINCE (F. Edwards). At a subsequent inquiry into Apprentice McCabe’s riding from the 400 metres to the 200 metres stewards found that his riding was not such as would justify a charge being laid against him under A.R. 135(b) for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to win or obtain the best possible place in the field. Apprentice McCabe pleaded guilty to a charge under A.R. 137(b) in that he failed to ride his mount out to the end of the race and/or approaching the end of the race. Apprentice McCabe was fined $200.
A post-race veterinary examination of ANDAMON (App. A. McCabe) revealed that the gelding had a laceration to the off foreleg and also had blood in the offside nostril as a result of an abrasion sustained whilst being loaded into the barriers.

When Jockey I. Fry was unable to fulfil his engagement due to injury, Jockey C. Whiteley was substituted as the rider of UPYONDER. Jockey Fry was advised that he must provide a medical clearance prior to being permitted to ride again.
Jockey D. Crossland pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 1200 metres he allowed TWO TWENTY SWIFT to shift in when insufficiently clear of HEDZ (B. Stewart), which was forced in across the running of CHERRY GAZE (P. Cullen), which had to be checked and lost its position when tightened for room between HEDZ and KATSIDIS (F. Edwards). Jockey Crossland was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Monday, 7th September 2009, up to and including 19th September 2009. Stewards, acting under the provisions of A.R. 196(3) ordered that the penalty be served cumulatively to any other penalty.
