SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT:
Stewards considered a complaint lodged by Mr S. Lauriston regarding the value of a bet he placed with Licensed Bookmaker Mr B. Ahearne. After considering all the evidence presented by all parties, stewards ordered that the bet be settled as per the details recorded on the bookmaker’s betting ticket.
LATE RIDING CHANGES:
When Jockey D. Crossland was to be overweight, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet. Subsequently Jockey Crossland pleaded guilty to a charge under A.R.120(b) for being overweight and unable to fulfil his engagements for CROSS MEDIA in Race 2 and SMARTAAT in Race 5. Jockey Crossland was fined $1,000. In addition stewards placed an embargo on Jockey Crossland accepting rides under 57.5 kg and was also informed that any future breach of this Rule may result in a suspension of his licence to ride in races.
Race 1: The Reef Hotel Casino Golden Maiden Plate – 1250 metres
1st – AFAARAWAY 2nd – EL AQUA 3rd – DEENLESTER 4th – GOGO DELAGO
The start was delayed when GRACERIN (R. Thompson) required attention by the farrier.
GOGO DELAGO (D. Crossland) was slow to begin.
At the start REEF ACTION (J. Felix) was tightened for room between AFAARAWAY (I. Toward) and LUXOR DAYZ (B. Stewart), both of which shifted ground.
Near the 900 metres GRACERIN (R. Thompson) was steadied off the heels of SCARYHEART (F. Edwards), which shifted in slightly.
Throughout the event AMATAMA (L. Dillon) raced wide and from the 900 metres hung out badly.
When questioned about the performance of GOGO DELAGO, Jockey D. Crossland explained that at its most recent starts the gelding had been racing over longer distances than today’s event. He stated that today the horse failed to show any early speed and got back further than had been expected. He added that when placed under pressure from the 550 metres GOGO DELAGO responded to his riding and finished the race off well. The explanations were noted.
Race 2: Cairns Airport QTIS Class 1 Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – BAY ROUTE 2nd – PIZZICATO 3rd – TAUNUS 4th – TRULY BONDED
TRULY BONDED (D. Simmons) was slow to begin.
In the early stages CROSS MEDIA (R. Thompson) raced wide.
In the middle stages TAUNUS (F. Edwards) over-raced.
At about the 450 metres TEVIOT WISH (B. Stewart) shifted out and made heavy contact with SPECIAL WOMAN (D. Green), which became severely unbalanced and almost dislodged its rider. In the incident the saddle on SPECIAL WOMAN shifted to the offside, resulting in the horse being retired from the event near the 200 metres.
Near the 200 metres BAY ROUTE (App. A. McCabe) shifted out abruptly placing its rider at a disadvantage in riding his mount out. Connections were advised that a warning has been placed on the horse’s racing manners.
Race 3: Simon George & Sons Colts, Geldings and Entires Class 2 Handicap – 960 metres
1st – CANHEDANCE 2nd – LOUQUALO 3rd – GENERAL SPARK 4th – STRICTLY STYLE
RASHEN ROULETTE (P. Falvey) and REPENT (App. A. McCabe) were slow
to begin.
In the early and middle stages REPENT over-raced.
LOUQUALO (B. Stewart) raced fiercely throughout the event.
TOP ROSS (L. Dillon), LOUQUALO (B. Stewart), CANHEDANCE (R. Thompson), and GENERAL SPARK (I. Toward) all raced wide throughout.
Jockey F. Edwards, the rider of STARTUS, was found guilty of a breach of A.R.137A(3) in that over the final 200 metres he used his whip in a manner considered by the stewards to be excessive. Jockey Edwards was fined $200.
Jockey B. Stewart was reminded of his obligations under A.R. 137A(3) regarding his use of the whip over the concluding stages.
Jockey R. Thompson was reprimanded under A.R. 137A regarding his use of the whip on CANHEDANCE over the final 200 metres.
Race 4: The Cairns Post Class 6 Handicap – 960 metres
1st – HOSTILITY 2nd – BRER FOX 3rd – EXPECTING 4th – ALTERNATE
The start of the race was delayed when ALTERNATE (App. A. McCabe) and EXPECTING (L. Dillon) proved difficult to load into the barriers. Connections were advised that warnings have been placed on both horses regarding their barrier manners.
The stewards delayed the declaration of correct weight to verify with the judge the correct placings. After conferring with the judge stewards declared correct weight on the placings: 1st HOSTILITY; 2nd BRER FOX; 3rd EXPECTING; 4th ALTERNATE; 5th FRED THE LEGION.
CLEAN HEELS (F. Edwards) was slow to begin.
BRER FOX (D. Crossland) began awkwardly and shifted out.
Near the 500 metres BRER FOX (D. Crossland) shifted in slightly, taking LIGHTNING MCQUEEN (I. Toward), in across the running of ALTERNATE (App. A. McCabe), resulting in ALTERNATE having to be steadied and HOSTILITY (B. Stewart), which was racing ungenerously, having to be steadied off the heels of ALTERNATE and shifted out wider. Jockey D. Crossland was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care.
Leaving the 200 metres FRED THE LEGION (C. Whiteley) was tightened for room between ALTERNATE (App. A. McCabe) and HOSTILITY (B. Stewart), which shifted in slightly. Jockey Stewart was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Race 5: Cairns Amateurs Fillies and Mares Class 2 Handicap – 960 metres
1st – RUBIN JANE 2nd – FLASH BANG 3rd – SMARTAAT 4th – LUBECK LASS
At the start QUINGILLY (I. Toward) was crowded for room between VALDA THERESE (F. Edwards) and NEVADA PRINCESS (J. Felix), which was taken in by RUBIN JANE (C. Whiteley).
MALA MALA (App. A. McCabe) began awkwardly and shifted out.
In the early stages RUBIN JANE (C. Whiteley) over-raced.
Near the 200 metres SMARTAAT (B. Stewart), which had been held up for clear running behind HEY CHEETAH (S. Morris), which was weakening, was shifted out, resulting in VALDA THERESE (F. Edwards) clipping heels and blundering. Jockey B. Stewart was given the benefit of the doubt as to whether he was entirely responsible for the incident, however he was severely reprimanded and reminded of his obligation to stop riding and straighten his mount when in similar circumstances.
HEY CHEETAH (S. Morris) and FLYER BELLE (D. Simmons) raced wide throughout.
Race 6: Pitchfork Wines Cairns Amateur Bracelet Class 3 Handicap – 1250 metres
1st – FLY TO WIN 2nd – STAR TASSLES 3rd – MACCACINO 4th – DISREPUTE
On jumping GENERAL MACARTHUR (B. Stewart) knuckled badly, almost dislodging its rider. A post-race veterinary examination of GENERAL MACARTHUR did not reveal any abnormality.
Shortly after the start FLY TO WIN (App. A. McCabe) was tightened for room between PROVOCATION (G. Cullen) and DISREPUTE (I. Toward), which was taken in by COURSE (D. Green).
Near the 1100 metres COURSE (D. Green) shifted in, forcing DISREPUTE (I. Toward) in onto the hindquarters of PROVOCATION (G. Cullen). A post-race veterinary examination of COURSE revealed that the mare had sustained an injury to the near fore fetlock and was lame. Connections were advised that they must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to COURSE being permitted to race again.
At about the 900 metres DIAMOND PURSUIT (D. Simmons) hung out and became awkward on the heels of GYPSY MIST (S. Morris).
Leaving the 200 metres GYPSY MIST (S. Morris) was tightened for room between STAR TASSLES (F. Edwards) and RONTGEN (C. Whiteley), which was inclined to lay out under pressure. Following the race Jockey C. Whiteley reported that the reins became tangled around his wrist, placing him at a disadvantage in riding his mount out.
PROVOCATION (G. Cullen) raced wide throughout.
Race 7: Carlton Amateur Cup Open Handicap – 2100 metres
1st – LINE BY LINE 2nd – ROLE OF NED 3rd – FRISCO BOPPER 4th – ROYAL VALLEY
The start was delayed to avoid a clash with an interstate event.
SHE MAKES ME BUSY (App. A. McCabe) was slow to begin.
KALGOORLIE KID (T. Thompson) was slow to get into stride.
Rounding the home turn LINE BY LINE (J. Felix) had a tendency to lay out.
When questioned about the performance of WISHFORADIAMOND, Jockey C. Whiteley stated that the mare travelled well in the early and middle stages, however over the final 200 metres he became concerned about the horse’s action and consequently eased WISHFORADIAMOND down. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.
Jockey P. Falvey, the rider of ROYAL VALLEY, was reprimanded under A.R.137A(4)(b) for the manner in which he used his whip over the final 200 metres, in that he raised his arm above shoulder level.
Jockey D. Green, the rider of ROLE OF NED, was cautioned under A.R.137A for the manner in which he used his whip over the final 200 metres.
Race 8: Hansen Yuncken Classic Open Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – LA SALLE 2nd – STARRY DANCER 3rd – GUNNERS BARRACKS 4th – KHATAAF
CARRY ON ACE (J. Felix) was slow to begin.
In the early and middle stages MIGHTY MITE (I. Toward) over-raced.
Near the 1000 metres NAYNAY (D. Simmons) was steadied away from the heels of XAARTRIK (App. A. McCabe), which shifted in. Apprentice McCabe was advised to exercise more care.
