Stewards questioned C. Small, the rider of HI CODY, regarding the riding tactics adopted and the overall performance of that runner. He stated that his instructions were to ride forward, however his mount was slow to begin and muster speed which required him to pressure his mount with the whip shortly after the start. He added that he was unable to clear the runners to his inside near the 1000m resulting in him being committed to racing wide when he was unable to come back and obtain cover. He further added that he persisted to ride forward and was able to obtain a position near the rail at the 600m, however his mount was under pressure a short distance later and did not feel free in its action from this point onwards and weakened in the home straight. Trainer J. Perry confirmed the instructions and felt that the horse not being able to obtain the lead had a bearing on the performance and that today’s firmer track could have also contributed to the performance. A post race veterinary examination of HI CODY revealed the gelding to be lame in the off side hind leg. J. Perry was advised that a veterinary certificate would be required for HI CODY before racing again.

Stewards questioned apprentice A. Fancourt, the rider of SONG OF THE BELL, regarding the riding tactics she adopted and the overall performance of that mare. She added that while she did ride aggressively early, she obtained the lead near the 800m easily. She further stated that SONG OF THE BELL began to weaken near the 500m which required her to apply pressure to the mare, however it did not respond to her riding and weakened further in the home straight.
