Supplementary Report
From Roma, 19.10.13 – Race 4
L. Appo, rider of JACK ‘N’ ME, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 600m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of DANCEFLOOR PRODIGY (M. McGillivray), which was forced inwards, tightening the running of LIKE A GEE SIX (Kerwin) onto the running rail and as a result was forced to check and lose ground. A short distance later, JACK ‘N’ ME continued to shift in when not sufficiently clear of DANCEFLOOR PRODIGY, resulting in that horse having to be eased to avoid heels. L. Appo’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 5 November, and to expire at midnight, 13 November.
From Stanthorpe, 19.10.13
Jockey C. Maund was fined $200 for being overweight on BEYOND IMAGINATION (R3) and DEFY ALLODDS (R5).
GENERAL
Apprentice B. Appo was reprimanded for failing to produce his winning rides book.
Race 1: Crowe Horwath BM79 H'cap - 1200m
BLOODED (B. Appo) and DEVILS FORCE (A. Fancourt) made contact on jumping away.
TISANI BOY (S. Fawke) began awkwardly, making contact with the barrier gate.
Near the 1000m, DEVILS FORCE, when overracing, improved to the inside of TISANI BOY. A short distance later, TISANI BOY shifted in, making contact with DEVILS FORCE.
Leaving the 800m, DEVILS FORCE improved to the inside of ALBION (N. Evans) where there was insufficient room and had to be steadied.
At the same stage, TISANI BOY, which was overracing, had to be steadied from the heels of SAMMY JUNIOR (N. Tomizawa).
DEVILS FORCE, whilst overracing, had to be steadied from the heels of ALBION near the 600m.
ALBION was inclined to lay in throughout the race.
LE MAX (A. Ward) overraced in the early stages.
S. Fawke, the rider of TISANI BOY, was unable to offer any tangible explanation for today’s disappointing performance. A post race veterinary examination of TISANI BOY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 2: Michael Kelly Maiden Plate 800m
RODIA which was fractious in the enclosure then dislodged rider N. Tomizawa when proceeding to the barriers. Subsequently N. Tomizawa reported from the starting barriers that he was unfit to take his ride and therefore RODIA was declared a late scratching at 2.14 pm.
Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on RODIA were ordered to be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time:
0 cents in the dollar on the face value of win of No.1
5 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets of No.1
9 cents in the dollar on the face value of 2nd place No.4
9 cents in the dollar on the face value of 3rd place No. 6.
Trainer M. Jeynes was advised that RODIA would be required to officially trial to the steward’s satisfaction before being permitted to race again.
DHARAVI shifted out and bumped SUGGESTA STAR (R. Ride) at the start, which knuckled and lost ground.
Near the 650m, CARNCOTTON (M. Abe) was tightened for room and forced to check between FIRE BENDER (W. O’Connell), which shifted out marginally, and NO INVOLVEMENT (M. McGillivray), which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.
Passing the 550m, FIRE BENDER shifted out and bumped NO INVOLVEMENT, which forced NO INOLVEMENT wider on the track.
DHARAVI laid out from the 500m and rounding the home turn was held up for clear running when racing to the inside of HAZOU (S. Apthorpe).
S. Fawke reported that DHARAVI raced greenly throughout.
After riding in this event, W. O’Connell (FIRE BENDER) approached stewards to advise them that he was unfit to fulfil his remaining engagements. Stewards subsequently stood down W. O’Connell and advised him that he would be required to provide a medical clearance prior to be permitted to ride again. Riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.
Race 3: Russel Behren’s Electrical BM65 H'cap - 1788m
As apprentice H. Kim did not hold the appropriate licence to ride at today’s meeting, he was replaced by apprentice S. Fawke as the rider of OH SO CLOSE.
MODERN AL (A. Fancourt) and SELL THE SILVER (R. Ride) began awkwardly.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion, MODERN AL hung out forcing OUTBACK GRANDE (K. Yoshida) out and in doing so forced TAYSTAR (J. Kehoe) extremely wide on the track.
Stewards inquired into the riding tactics adopted by R. Ride on SELL THE SILVER. Of particular concern to stewards were the reasons for SELL THE SILVER racing a significant distance from the main body of the field in the early and middle stages. After taking evidence from trainer B. Currie and apprentice jockey R. Ride, stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date to be fixed. Subsequent to the inquiry a post-race veterinary examination report revealed SELL THE SILVER to be lame in the off fore leg.
L. Tilley, the rider of SNOW’S A LADY, stated that his mount travelled fairly throughout, however dropped the bit near the 800m which required him to place his mount under pressure from that point. He added that his mount ran on fairly in the straight.
Stewards reminded J. Kehoe (TAYSTAR) of his obligations to ride his mounts out to the end of the race.
Stewards will interview L. Tilley regarding his use of the whip in the straight.
J. Kehoe, rider of TAYSTAR, was fined the sum of $200 for excessive use of the whip in a backhand manner.
Race 4: Icon Steel Class 3 H’cap – 1400m
ONE TREE (B. Appo) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
When the pace eased leaving the 1200m, AKBAR MAHAL (R. Goltz) overraced at the heels of that runner, AKBAR MAHAL continued to overrace and failed to settle until leaving the 800m.
Near the 550m, ONE TREE was steadied from the heels of AKBAR MAHAL, which shifted in.
S. Bogenhuber reported at scale that rather than being caught 3 wide she elected to allow ANTIPHONS to stride forward leaving the 1000m and take up a forward position.
Stewards questioned rider A. Ward with regards to MISS MARGANI leading today which was in contrast to its most recent racing pattern. He stated that as the horse had been slow to begin at its most recent start, his instructions were to be postive from the barriers. He added that MISS MARGANI began well from the wide gate and instead of racing wide he elected to continue to ride forward and was able to obtain the lead easily. J. Hearne confirmed the instructions. Stewards in accepting the explanations, reminded J. Hearne of his obligations to notify stewards of any change of riding tactics.
Race 5: Hart Plumbers Class 1 H'cap - 1300m
SKILFUL PAT (B. Appo) began awkwardly.
HE’S A REBEL (C. Schmidt) overraced in the early stages and near the 900m had to be steadied from the heels of RETURN TICKET (N. Evans). Approaching the 800m, HE’S A REBEL whilst overracing shifted in, taking SKILFUL PAT inwards, resulting in THE WATER BOMBER (A. Fancourt) having to be steadied when crowded for room.
SKILFUIL PAT hung out approaching and rounding the home turn.
THE WATER BOMBER was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
When questioned regarding the performance of RETURN TICKET, jockey N. Evans stated the performance was disappointing on face value. He added that the mare travelled well in the early stages, however when placed under pressure from the 600m the mare failed to respond to his riding. He further added that he had indicated to the trainer that RETURN TICKET may not have run out the distance of today’s race. A post race veterinary examination of RETURN TICKET failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Stewards sought an explanation from trainer R. Morris with regard to the seemingly improved performance of SHADOW SHOW. R. Morris stated that the gelding’s previous two starts had not been disappointing in that SHADOW SHOW had drawn wide barriers and as a result had raced wide. He added that SHADOW SHOW had drawn well in barrier one today and that the rider had been able to position the horse on the rail behind the leaders and felt better luck in running had an effect on today’s performance. Stewards noted the explanation.
Race 6: The Bunya Park Class 2 H'cap – 1100m
A pre-race veterinary examination of DAILY PLANET, which raced yesterday at the Beaudesert race meeting, passed the gelding to race.
Stewards will make inquiries with Racing Information Services regarding the official gear worn by DHACOURT.
PLUM BOB (M. McGillivray) and BLINKIN FUNNY (A. Ward) were slow to begin.
DAILY PLANET (S. Fawke) raced in restricted room for a short distance leaving the 800m between COSTA LOTSA (A. Fancourt) and THAT’S JERRY (R. Payne), which shifted in slightly.
JUST A ROCKSTAR (S. Apthorpe) hung out in the middle stages.
Near the 700m, BLINKIN FUNNY (A. Ward) improved up on to the heels of JUST A ROCKSTAR and as a result had to be restrained.
BILLY GOAT (S. Bogenhuber) and DHACOURT (K. Yoshida) raced wide for the majority of the race.
PLUM BOB was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
Stewards questioned apprentice M. McGillivray with regards to his riding of PLUM BOB from entering the home straight, of particular concern were the reasons for him shifting out significantly whilst racing in a position near the rail. M. McGillivray stated his instructions were to ride the gelding with cover and to get the horse to the outside of runners from the 400m to gain clear running. He added that the horse travelled well in a midfield position, however in carrying out his instructions, he was held up on the heels of DAILY PLANET approaching and rounding the home turn. He further added that near the 200m he believed he was unable to obtain clear running when racing between THAT’S JERRY and DAILY PLANET, and for this reason elected to shift out abruptly around the heels of DAILY PLANET. He went on to explain that after he was able to get to the outside of runners that the horse finished off the race very well. Trainer C. Smith confirmed the instructions and was satisfied with M. McGillivray’s riding of PLUM BOB and felt that he had made the right decision in shifting out to obtain clear running. Stewards in considering all of the evidence were of the opinion that M. McGillivray had erred in his judgement by shifting out at that point of the race and would have been better served by maintaining his position on the back of THAT’S JERRY. Stewards took into account M. McGillivray’s relative inexperience and bearing in mind C. Smith’s instructions, believed that his decision to shift out at the relevant stage was not so unreasonable as to leave him culpable under the rules.
