BRISBANE TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT MON.3.5.99

WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - 7 M. ALL TRACK


GENERAL: As S. Seamer was indisposed, the following riding replacements were approved: Race 1. DARMALA - M. Cahill. Race 2. CALLING - R.S. Dye; Race 4. LEADER MAN - C. Reith; Race 7. PERFECTIONIST - D. Nikolic.

Course patron Mr G. Sitek pleaded guilty to a charge of improper conduct in that he gained entry to the racecourse via a restricted area, namely the swabbing compound. Mr Sitek was fined $100.

Trainer A. McConechy was fined $50 for nominating KINGS O’R for the Class 4 H’cap, a race for which it was ineligible.


RACE 1: HENNESSY COGNAC H’CAP - 1640M.

PERISSA BAY was slow to begin.

Rounding the first turn, RARE MOSAIC commenced to hang out and clipped the heels of EXPLODE TO GLORY. Following this incident, RARE MOSAIC continued to race ungenerously for the remainder of the event. DARMALA, which was trailing RARE MOSAIC being hampered as a result leaving the 1200m..

A veterinary examination of PORTLAND PRINCE , which weakened in the straight, failed to reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken from that gelding.



RACE 2: BALLANTINE’S FINEST H’CAP - 1350M.

APSARAS was slow to begin.

When the pace slackened on the first turn, PRINCESS ACADEMY had to be restrained off ‘TIS LOVE. As a result, PRINCESS ACADEMY shifted out, resulting in PREANA ROAD being checked when tightened onto the heels of IRRESPONSIBLE LASS. CALLING, which was following, also had to be checked and lost ground.

When being steadied at the 700m., MISS CEEANNE commenced to race ungenerously and as a result shifted out, tightening MAYNE DISCO on to the hind quarters of CALLING.

For some distance passing the 200m., APSARAS was held up behind ‘TIS LOVE.

A veterinary examination of PRINCESS ACADEMY following the event revealed that filly to have been galloped on behind the off hock.



RACE 3: THE HERITAGE HOTEL SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H’CAP - 1200M.

ELPREMO and KYAMBA STAR were slow to begin.

Approaching the 800m., MAELSTROM got its head up and ran out across the heels of KYAMBA STAR.

Nearing the 600m., MAELSTROM again had to be steadied when cramped for room by KYAMBA STAR, which was taken in by ELPREMO.

G. Colless reported that WHERE’S THE MAGIC was inclined to hang in throughout the event.



RACE 4: SWIFT & MOORE H’CAP - 2220M.

On jumping away, MR. GARY was tightened for room between REPUTED GROOM and NAZZARO.

Approaching the home turn, OUR PRIME MOVER had to be checked when tightened for room by MR. MUNDANE, which was inclined to lay in at a stage when held up behind the tiring OUR RED BOY.

On the home turn, NAZZARO was held up behind the tiring OUR RED BOY.

MR. GARY suffered a bleeding attack during the event. The mandatory 3 month bar from racing will apply. A swab sample was taken from MR. GARY.

MILIVOJ broke down during the event. The gelding was euthanased on humane grounds.



RACE 5: DOMAINE CHANDON LABOUR DAY CUP - 2040M.

G. Childs, rider of ISTIDAAD, was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in at the first turn, resulting in IRON HORSE and CRONUS both being cramped for room.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on SECOND COMING, D. Craven stated at its most recent starts in New Zealand, the gelding had raced well when ridden off the pace. He added that his instructions were to again ride the horse off the pace, however when caught 3 deep approaching the first turn, he was obliged to steady and eventually settle further back in the field than he had intended.

A veterinary examination of CRONUS following the event revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration to the outside of the near fore cannon.



RACE 6: TREASURY CASINO H’CAP - 1110M.

TOASTED GOLD was slow to begin.

At the 500m., ALANOR LAD was inconvenienced by LAURIE’S LOTTERY, which shifted out to improve. S. Nolan, rider of LAURIE’S LOTTERY, was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.

S. Katsidis, rider of BLACK SAILS, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that he permitted his mount to shift out near the 150m. from behind IN THE RED, resulting in MAGGALA being severely checked when tightened on to BENEDICT. S. Katsidis was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight 8 May, and to expire at midnight, 20 May 1999.

RACE 7: MOET & CHANDON CHAMPAGNE CLASSIC SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES - 1200M.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by Mr P. Moody, trainer of the 5th placegetter, CLAYTONS, against MIGHT AND POWER being declared the 2nd placegetter, alleging interference near the 150m.. It was established that simultaneously inside the 200m., MIGHT AND GOLD shifted to the inside of FINE ACTION, and CLAYTONS shifted to the outside of TERJULE to obtain clear running, however soon afterwards CLAYTONS was impeded when TERJULE commenced to drift out. CLAYTONS was then held up for some distance. Stewards dismissed the objection and fined Mr Moody $100 for lodging what the stewards deemed to be a frivolous protest.

CLAYTONS and TERJULE were slow to begin.

At the 700m., ALPINE EXPRESS became unbalanced when being steadied off the leader SWIRLER. MIGHT AND GOLD, which was following, shifted out, forcing AQUIVER and PERFECTIONIST wider on the track.

M. Cahill, rider of the winner, ALPINE EXPRESS, was cautioned for permitting his mount to shift in towards the fence near the 100m., resulting in the tiring SWIRLER being slightly inconvenienced.

G. Colless reported that FINE ACTION was forced to work hard for the entire event and was under pressure prior to the home turn to maintain its position. A veterinary examination of FINE ACTION following the event revealed the colt to be shin sore in the off fore leg. A swab sample was taken from FINE ACTION.

SWIRLER lost its off hind plate in running.

RACE 8: JACK DANIELS H’CAP - 1350M.

No racing incidents.

G. Boss, rider of the 3rd placegetter, ALFRED THE GREAT, was fined $100 for negligence in failing to weigh in with the placegetters.

ALL WINNERS, MR. GARY, PORTLAND PRINCE AND FINE ACTION WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
