BRISBANE TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT.26.8.00

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr S. Railton (Chairman); Mr A. Reardon; Mr C. McLune; Mr D. Aurisch; Mr W. Geggie; W. Birch.

WEATHER - FINE TRACK - FAST RAIL - 1M. ALL TRACK

GENERAL: As A. Patillo was indisposed, the following riding replacements were approved: Race 1. TRUMP OF COLOGNE - R. Goltz; Race 2. VIRGO'S BROTHER - R. Goltz; Race 3. SUPERSTEAM - J. Taylor; Race 6. FLAXMILL BAY - A. Erhart; Race 7. FORGOTTEN HERO - A. Erhart; Race 8. GRACEWICK - A. Erhart.

RACE 1: SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1350M.

Leaving the 600m., TRUMP OF COLOGNE shifted out around the heels of OH BLUE ANGEL, resulting in RULENZA ROAD being taken out on to DO WHAT YOU LIKE, which overreacted and shifted out abruptly to a wider position on the track.

J. Stanley, rider of RULENZA ROAD, accidentally dropped his whip at the 100m..

RACE 2: SUNSTATE LAUNDRY SERVICES H'CAP - 1350M.

ON VENTURA HIWAY and RIVER AFFAIR were slow to begin.

After improving quickly to the inside of the heels of VIANGAR, RIVER AFFAIR had to be steadied when that horse shifted in at the 1150m.. A short distance later, VIANGAR continued to shift in despite the efforts of its rider, M. Cahill, resulting in FINAL FORECAST being tightened for racing room.

ON VENTURA HIWAY shifted out on the 800m. turn, inconveniencing VIRGO'S BROTHER.

RIVER AFFAIR was inclined to hang out in the middle stages.

SWAPAN raced ungenerously in the middle stages and was reluctant to hold its position inside SHALARKO.

After being held up for a run in the early stages of the straight, FINAL FORECAST had to be steadied prior the 100m. when attempting to take a run to the inside of FINAL BID where there was insufficient room.

Whilst being swabbed subsequent to the event, LUCKY RAID bled from both nostrils. In considering whether LUCKY RAID was a bleeder in terms of A.R.53A, stewards heard submissions from trainer R. Maund that the gelding may have bled due to a possible knock to the head in transit to the course. This evidence was based upon the fact that LUCKY RAID was sensitive in the head area prior to the event. Stewards heard a report from Dr F. Manahan that he could detect no evidence of any bruising or injury to the head area. Stewards declared LUCKY RAID had indeed bled and further ruled that the horse be barred from racing for a period of 3 months as this was the first occasion on which LUCKY RAID had bled. A swab sample was taken from LUCKY RAID.
RACE 3: QUEENSLAND PINE H'CAP - 2100M.

Apprentice A. Morrison was fined $100 for failing to claim his full allowance on OUR CULPRIT.

J. Byrne, who was distressed after riding ENGLAND in race 2, was stood down for this event by the club's doctor. M. Carson was substituted as the rider of BOYKAMBIL.

DANEGOLD was slow to begin.

An inquiry was opened into interference suffered by GALLANT HERO on the home turn. It was established that GALLANT HERO, which was reluctant to hold its position, had to be checked when momentarily tightened for room by MARIA RIVER LAD, which in turn was taken in by MALFUNCTION. It was accepted that MALFUNCTION had shifted in suddenly and that its rider A. Erhart had made every endeavour to correct the horse's movement.

SUPERSTEAM was held up and unable to obtain clear running from the entrance to the straight until the 150m..

RACE 4: INDOOROOPILLY SHOPPINGTOWN NEWSAGENTS' H'CAP - 1200M.

ZUKA had to be checked at the 800m. after improving to the inside of the heels of ELECTRICAL STORM where there was insufficient room.

For a short distance after passing the 200m., GALACTIC ROMEO was held up for clear running.

When questioned regarding the performance of TIMBER CINDERS, J. Byrne stated that the mare was quite reluctant to stretch out in the early and middle stages despite his hard riding. He indicated that near the 600m., TIMBER CINDERS had got off stride when racing awkwardly at the heels of ZUKA, however the mare did not find the line and gave the impression that she may have jarred up on today's firm track. Stable representative Mr B. Hearn indicated that TIMBER CINDERS had done well in the stable and had continued to work well leading into today's event, and the only excuse he could find was that the mare had indeed jarred up as suggested by J. Byrne. A veterinary examination of TIMBER CINDERS soon after the event failed to reveal any abnormality, and a swab sample was taken from that mare. Mr Hearn was requested to inform stewards if any abnormality became apparent with the mare on return to its stable.

RACE 5: JWP PROJECT SERVICES H'CAP - 1350M.

Apprentice A. Morrison was fined $100 for failing to claim his full allowance on MISS CRABOPPLE.

The start was delayed when ZAPATEADO in particular proved difficult to load. Trainer D. Waller was advised that ZAPATEADO would be required to pass a further barrier test prior to its next race start.

JUDE'S ANGEL shifted in soon after the start, causing a tightening to FIGURANTE, JAVA HEART and LA PHILOMENE.

When questioned, M. Cahill stated that with genuine early pace he elected to take a trailing position on FIGURANTE. He further advised that when JAVA HEART improved around FIGURANT at the 650m., the mare was momentarily under pressure and compounded badly in the straight. M. Cahill added that FIGURANTE appeared to pull up quite well and this was confirmed by the club's veterinary surgeon who could detect no abnormalities with the mare. A swab sample was taken from FIGURANTE. Trainer K. Lane confirmed that FIGURANTE, which was resuming from a short break, was not at its top for today's event, however she was nonetheless satisfied the mare would be more than competitive. Trainer K. Lane was advised that in light of today's unexplained performance, FIGURANTE must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next race start.

RACE 6: HEINRICH CONSTRUCTIONS H'CAP - 1200M.

At the 950m., ROBBITE had to be steadied off the heels of AKAABER'S PROMISE, which shifted in.

ROBBITE and DYNAMIC REASON both had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight.

At the 150m., SPYING was accidentally struck across the nose by the whip of D. Griffin, rider of CHEMICAL BROTHER.

When questioned regarding SPYING getting out of its ground in the early stages, A. Morrison stated that the horse hesitated as the start was effected and lost ground. He added that for this reason he did not bustle the horse early, but rather allowed the gelding to eventually gather momentum of its own accord.

RACE 7: QUEENSLAND RACEHORSE OWNERS' ASSOCIATION H'CAP - 1615M.

LADY SOLVIL jumped inwards at the start, hampering VACEN LEE and ROCKET BALL.

MASTER RAIDER was also hampered on jumping away when cramped for room between YOU'RE ALL ON and MALTESE BEAUTY.

RACE 8: NORTHFIELD CAR SOUND H'CAP - 1350M.

Trainer F.W. Mitchell was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for LUNCHTME LEGEND by the prescribed time.

SILENT ASSASSIN was slow to begin.

S. Seamer was questioned regarding his riding of SILENT ASSASSIN between the 600m. and the 300m.. He stated that after shifting out from behind KRONA WALK he was then reluctant to push up for a run between that horse and to the inside of RETROUSSE after leaving the 600m. as he felt that the run available was not sufficient for SILENT ASSASSIN, which was a big striding horse. S. Seamer further added that SILENT ASSASSIN then raced in an awkward position when held up for a run rounding the home turn, and eventually a run appeared to the inside of FORGING'S LAD, which enabled the gelding to obtain clear running and finish the race off strongly. After hearing submissions from S. Seamer, no action was taken, however he was advised that stewards were concerned with his failure to take what appeared to be an available run between KRONA WALK and RETROUSSE between the 600m. and 500m..

A veterinary examination of BLUE POET, which raced disappointingly, failed to reveal any abnormality. When questioned, A. Morrison stated that BLUE POET hung out and was reluctant to stretch out in the middle stages.

ALL WINNERS, LUCKY RAID, FIGURANTE AND TIMBER CINDERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
