BRISBANE TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT.16.6.01

WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - TRUE POSITION


RACE 1: KING'S THEATRE H'CAP - 1200M.

ICY GRIP and PIONEER came together on jumping away.

Passing the 1000m., ICY GRIP had to be steadied when tightened for room by PIONEER, which in turn was taken in by BALAKA. Whilst stewards accepted that BALAKA had been influenced to a degree by CRYPTIC RED, which shifted in at this stage, A. Merrit, rider of BALAKA, was nonetheless reprimanded and urged to make more effort to provide racing room for runners to his inside.



RACE 2: ANSETT AUSTRALIA H'CAP - 2200M.

For some distance in the straight, DANYON was impeded for a run between ALMIGHTY ALLIANCE and MISTY MISTER.

Over the final 100m., DANYON was accidentally struck across the nose by the whip of G. Killen, rider of ALMIGHTY ALLIANCE.

M. Pelling, rider of the 4th placegetter, SCRUB 'N' CHIPS, was fined $200 for dropping his hands just short of the finish line.

RACE 3: LIVESTOCK TRANSPORT GROUP H'CAP - 1350M.

MUSIC VIDEO and SUN SCREEN were slow to begin.

MISS ANNA LOUISE jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with TROUBLE IN HEAVEN.


RACE 4: CATHAY PACIFIC H'AP - 1615M.

ROMANZA was obliged to race wide in the early and middle stages.


RACE 5: HONG KONG IS IT DOOMBEN DOLLARS - 1200M.

POLLYANNA ANNA jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

On the first turn, BAAL YABBA and RHYHMIC CHIEF both had to be restrained when cramped for room between DUNBAR, which shifted in when not quite clear, and SHE'S A KEEPER, which shifted out when racing greenly.
SHE'S A KEEPER continued to race greenly and in the middle stages hung out, forcing BAAL YABBA wider on the track.

Veterinary examinations following the event revealed that RYTHMIC CHIEF to have blood in its mouth as a result of a laceration to the corner of its mouth, and that DUNBAR was found to have blood in its mouth due to a dislodged tooth cap.


RACE 6: STAR CRUISES SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1200M.

SPECIAL ISSUE, which sustained minor lacerations to its leg in transit to the course, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

HELLO PUMPKIN, which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly after the start by SENSATIONAL GIRL, which was taken out by TURF ACE.

After beginning awkwardly and losing ground at the start, JUST AWE tended to race ungenerously in the early stages. JUST AWE then hung out badly in the middle stages of the event. The club's veterinary surgeon reported that JUST AWE was found to be short in its action behind following the event.

For the entire length of the straight, LINEA was held up for clear running between MY LOURDES and SNIPPETS' CHARM.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MADISON, K. McEvoy stated that with there being a deal of anticipated speed in the race he was instructed to ride the gelding where it was comfortable. He further indicated that he was able to obtain a position midfield one off the fence, and that the gelding travelled reasonably well, however he became concerned from the 600m. where the horse was not putting himself into the race, and indeed MADISON only plugged to the line. A veterinary examination of MADISON failed to reveal any abnormality.

SPECIAL ISSUE lost its near fore plate in running.


RACE 7: GLENLOGAN PARK LADY OF THE TURF STAKES - 1350M.

J. Sheehan was unable to fulfil his engagement on TRANSFER and was replaced by G. Birrer. At the request of the stewards, J. Sheehan was required to present himself on course to be examined by the club's doctor. After interviewing J. Sheehan and taking evidence from the club's medical adviser, stewards were prepared to accept that due to his feeling unwell he was unable to continue wasting during the course of the day to make TRANSFER'S handicapped weight of 57 kgs. J. Sheehan was advised that this matter would be brought to the attention of the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Board stewards panel.

D. Griffin was examined by the club's doctor after riding in race 6 and was stood down from his remaining engagements. R. Pitman was substituted as the rider of CLASSIC CLICHÉ and MR. BRANNIGAN (Race 8).

SUNSET was slow to begin.

When the pace steadied near the 1000m., BE COOL commenced to overrace, got its head up and shifted out slightly. As a consequence, TRANSFER, which was also pulling hard, struck the heels of BE COOL and blundered. In this incident, TRANSFER broke down and was retired from the event. When TRANSFER lost ground abruptly, PRENUPTIAL was tightened onto CANGAZE. CRYPTAVIA, SUNSET and TRISTRAM'S SHOW were also inconvenienced.

At the entrance to the straight, MARY MACHREE brushed CITICHY when shifting out to obtain clear running. At the 250m., MARY MACHREE was obliged to alter course back to the inside of CLASSIC CLICHÉ when that mare drifted out slightly. When shifting back inwards, MARY MACHREE contacted BE COOL.


After being steadied off the heels of RAVEN'S PAL, which was taken out by PRENUPTIAL at the 300m., SUNSET was then impeded for a run between RAVEN'S PAL and BERLIN over the final 100m...

A veterinary examination of BE COOL following the event revealed the mare to have been galloped on above the off hock, and also to have sustained a puncture wound behind the off fore fetlock. The club's veterinary surgeon also reported that BE COOL had bled from both nostrils. As this was the first occasion on which BE COOL had bled, the mare will be barred from racing for a period of 3 months.



RACE 8: ROB ANDREWES BLOODSTOCK INSURANCE H'CAP - 1200M.

On the first turn, MR. CENTREFOLD had to be restrained when cramped for room by STAR COVET, which was inclined to lay in.



ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
