On returning to scale G Birney, the rider of SURE SIGN, complained that the gelding had been denied a fair start. After taking evidence from all relevant parties it was established that just prior to the start being effected SURE SIGN got its head over the stall partition into the adjoining stall and that the starter had not heard calls from G Birney and a barrier attendant assisting SURE SIGN alerting him to the predicament. As a result, stewards deemed that SURE SIGN was denied a fair start and acting under the powers of A.R. 134A ruled the horse to be a non-runner. Consequently, all monies invested on SURE SIGN were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 6 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 7 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets applicable.

NED'S REVENGE was also slow to begin.

K Pope was questioned regarding his riding of LARGER between the 800m and the home turn. K Pope advised that he had instructions from trainer I O'Neill to assume the lead if at all possible, with specific advice to attempt to position the horse so that runners did not improve to its outside approaching the home turn. He stated that for this reason, after leaving the 700m he allowed LARGER to move away from the running rail, anticipating that the rider of DYNAMIC REASON, which was racing at his mount's hind quarters, would steady and switch to the inside of his mount.

Trainer I O'Neill confirmed that he had provided advice to K Pope that LARGER raced more truly when runners did not improve to its outside, however had not specifically instructed him to race wide as he did. Mr O'Neill also pointed out that LARGER had frequently had a tendency to lay out in its races. K Pope was advised that whilst stewards believed that he had attempted to satisfy the requirements of trainer I O'Neill and that his actions were not a deliberate attempt to either prejudice or assist the chances of any other runner in the event, he was nonetheless admonished for his tactics which forced DYNAMIC REASON to cover extra ground.

Leaving the 150m DYNAMIC REASON was accidentally struck across the head by the whip of M Rodd, the rider of STORMY LODGE.

C Prosser was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, to commence immediately and expire at midnight on Monday, 13 August. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account that C Prosser had incurred only one careless riding suspension during her four-year apprenticeship.

At the 900m LENNY had to be steadied off the heels of MISS MARTINDALE which continued to shift in.

As MISS MARTINDALE assumed the lead at the 850m, QUEEN AMIDALA, when steadied by its rider, brushed the running rail, became unbalanced and lost ground. RIVIERA TREASURE, which was trailing, shifted out resulting in REPRENDRE being tightened on to the hind quarters of ILLUMINAR.

Approaching the 600m LENNY lost ground when racing greenly. RIVIERA TREASURE, which was following, shifted out off the heels of LENNY, bumping heavily with ILLUMINAR.

On the home turn ACTION FRONT shifted out off the heels of LENNY, which continued to lose ground, resulting in SHAROU being checked when taken out on to the heels of RIVIERA TREASURE.
