WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - 4.5M. ALL TRACK
GENERAL: Stewards today continued an inquiry into the activities of licensed bookmaker Mr S. Searles whilst on course at the Doomben Race Meeting on 2 November 2002. Subsequently, Mr Searles pleaded guilty to being in breach of LR 113(3)(b), in that he accepted bets from registered clients on his registered telephone whilst attending the Doomben race meeting when his betting stand was operating at the Cluden Racecourse at Townsville on the same day. Whilst it was accepted that this situation was brought about by a number of circumstances and that he had arranged for the bets to be properly recorded, he was nonetheless fined the sum of $1000.
RACE 1: KINGFISHER BAY RESORT H'CAP - 1350M.
A veterinary certificate was tendered for THE WRECK, which was a late withdrawal at 10.10 a.m..
GUILTY JOKER was slow to begin.
Approaching the 200m., MCNAMARA was disappointed for a run between DOOGALL'S LUCK and VEESAR.
When questioned regarding the form improvement displayed by SILVER CANON in winning today's event, trainer R. McCall stated he was not particularly confident of the horse's chances, given its moderate recent form. He stated that at its most recent run when last of 7 at Caloundra on 27 October, the horse's rider had indicated that the gelding had floundered in the soft going when placed under pressure on that day. The only explanation Mr McCall could offer for today's improved performance was that the gelding was able to lead without being challenged, indicating that the horse had previously raced well when allowed to lead.
RACE 2: LEIGHTON'S CONTRACTORS H'CAP - 1350M.
NO MORE KISSES was slow to begin.
EXCELLENT ANN raced ungenerously in the run to the first turn.
At the 800m. turn, WILLO ROSE had to be steadied off the heels of EXCELLENT ANN and shifted out slightly. This resulted in NO MORE KISSES, which was trailing, having to be steadied when that mare improved up inside the heels of WILLO ROSE where there was insufficient room.
A veterinary examination of FAIR DECREE, which weakened badly in the straight, revealed a laceration to the back of the off fore fetlock, and that the mare had lost its off fore plate in running.
RACE 3: BENDIGO BANK H'CAP - 1110M.
OUTBACK ROSE was slow to begin.
SWEET NED jumped outwards at the start, severely tightening BONNE PAL, which as a consequence lost considerable ground.
Approaching the first turn, ANNIE LA VIE had to be steadied away from the heels of SWEET NED, which shifted out. SWEET NED then commenced to hang out, forcing MARRY ME DEE to cover extra ground rounding the first turn. SWEET NED continued to hang badly for the remainder of the event. Trainer S. Phelps was advised that SWEET NED must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next race start.
At the 800m., CAPTAIN ZIGZAG, which was racing greenly, brushed the running rail of its own accord and lost ground.
RACE 4: VISY INNOVATIVE PACKAGING H'CAP - 1200M.
DISTINCTLY shifted in at the start, tightening PROUD.
Rounding the home turn, EVIL SNIP had to be checked when attempting a run to the inside of FLAT where there was insufficient room. Apprentice D. Evans (FLAT) was reprimanded for his lack of judgement in this instance.
YOGI'S EDITION was disappointed for a run between TALE OF TRIOMPHE and GOLD BOLERO inside the 300m..
DISTINCTLY was obliged to race wide during the event.
RACE 5: REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE H'CAP - 2030M.
When questioned, apprentice Z. Purton stated that he was instructed to ride SCRUB 'N' CHIPS back in the field and to improve his position from the 800m. and ensure that the race was a true staying test. He indicated that despite being ridden from the 700m., SCRUB 'N' CHIPS did not quicken as he had anticipated and was forced wide from that stage. A veterinary examination of SCRUB 'N' CHIPS failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken from the gelding.
RACE 6: VISY MAKES RECYCLING EASY QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1200M.
On return to scale, protests were lodged by M. Rodd, rider of the 3rd placegetter, GASCONNADE, M. McDonald, rider of the 4th placegetter, SHEER DEVOTION, and R. Hurley, rider of the 5th place, PROUDLY AGRO against UPWARDS being declared the 2nd placegetter, alleging interference in the straight. It was established upon straightening that as a consequence of movement of runners to its inside, UPWORDS was obliged to shift out marginally, causing inconvenience to GASCONNADE, PROUDLY AGRO and SHEER DEVOTION. However, it was further established a short distance later when placed under pressure, UPWORDS shifted out a number of horses of its own accord, severely hampering GASCONNADE, PROUDLY AGRO and resulting in SHEER DEVOTION having to be checked off the heels of PROUDLY AGRO. All objections were upheld, with the placings amended to read: 2 - WAYJO - 1st; 3 - GASCONNADE - 2nd; 5 - SHEER DEVOTION - 3rd; 1 - PROUDLY AGRO - 4th. G. Geran, rider of UPWORDS, was severely reprimanded for failing to stop riding and straighten his mount when it shifted out after leaving the 300m..
NO STOPS was slow to begin.
WAYJO jumped inwards at the start, hampering SPORTS CLASS.
KIMBARETTE jumped outwards at the start, tightening PROUDLY AGRO on to UPWARDS.
Passing the 800m., PROUDLY AGRO got its head up when steadied off the heels of GASCONNADE. NUTGRASS, which was following, was also hampered.
Soon after straightening, SPORTS CLASS was obliged to alter course abruptly to the inside to avoid the heels of WAYJO, which shifted out. WAYJO continued to drift out under pressure in the straight.
RACE 7: IT PAYS TO BE WASTEWISE H'CAP - 1630M.
MAY ROYAL was slow to begin.
Near the 700m. STARTELL and NED'S REVENGE raced tight for some distance as STARTELL attempted to shift out around the heels of BUSTER JONES.
MAY ROYAL and DESK TOP LOVER had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight.
R. Hurley, rider of STARTELL, was cautioned by stewards regarding his use of the whip near the 200m.. It was established that as R. Hurley had pulled the whip on STARTELL near the 200m., he had accidentally struck HIRSHBERG on the head with his whip, and then on several occasions he had struck Z. Purton, rider of HIRSHBERG. R. Hurley was advised that in similar circumstances he must immediately modify his action so that no contact is made with any competing horse or rider.
RACE 8: BENDIGO CUMMUNITY BANK H'CAP - 1110M.
As A. Pattillo was indisposed, S. Galloway was substituted as the rider of GRAND BATAAN.
Trainer J. Fogarty was fined $50 for failing to present ANOTHER DIRECTION on course by the prescribed time.
CLASSIC FRONTIER and FOXMORE bumped at the start.
GRAND BATAAN was slow to begin.
Making the first turn, MARMADAMAH lost ground when tightened for room by BALLANULLY. Whilst it was established that MARMADAMAH had been somewhat reluctant to hold its position, and that BALLANULLY had been initially inclined to shift away from his mount, J. Powell, rider of LADY ISABELLA, was nonetheless cautioned for allowing his mount to shift in, causing some tightening to the runners to his inside.
