BRISBANE TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT MON.27.1.03

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr A. Reardon (Chairman), Mr J. Hackett, Mr C. Clifford, Mr C. McLune, Mr R. Sanders, Ms S. Gillespie (Cadet).

WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - 6M. ALL TRACK

GENERAL: From QTC meeting, 25.1.03 - Race 7.

Jockey G. Duffy was fined $100 for being overweight on THREATNER.

RACE 1: CARLTON DRAUGHT H'CAP - 2040M.

Trainer P. Balzen was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for RACER'S SUCCESS by the required time.

Jockey A. Abraham was fined $200 for being overweight on HE'S A TRESURE. As there was no other rider available, permission was granted for him to take the ride.

EDINBURGH CASTLE was slow to begin.

AGITATOR blundered on jumping away.

At the entrance to the straight, CITY \MISSION shifted out to improve and made contact with FAVELAS.

Close to the finish line, MONTROSE BILL had to be steadied to avoid the heels of RACER'S SUCCESS, which shifted out slightly.

D. Evans was questioned regarding the disappointing performance of REPRENDRE. He stated that the horse travelled well throughout the event and was held up for clear running until after leaving the 200m., however when placed under pressure at this stage, REPRENDRE failed to respond. Trainer R. Heathcote was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance, however was of the opinion that REPRENDRE may dislike racing inside horses. Mr Heathcote undertook to advise stewards of anything that may come to his attention in the days following the race which may have had some bearing on the horse's disappointing performance.

RACE 2: XXXX BITTER QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1110M.

SANQUIN was difficult to load and delayed the start for some time. Trainer J. Bayliss was advised that he must obtain a further barrier certificate for SANQUIN prior to its next race start.

VICTORY SIREN was slow to begin and hung out after leaving the 800m. and continued to do so for the remainder of the event. Trainer A. Williamson was advised that VICTORY SIREN must trial satisfactorily before starting again.

SEQUALO JOY jumped away awkwardly and made contact with the hind quarters of DAME NOVA.

SWEET CONNECTIONS was slow to begin.


After leaving the 800m., SEQUALO JOY had to be restrained off the heels of FACE VALUE.

For some distance after leaving the 600m., TANAMI MISS was inclined to hang out.


RACE 3: BARRY ADAMS H'CAP - 1200M.

Approaching the 200m., HIGHLAND STORM was disappointed for a run between KILLACHI and PISANI BAY.


RACE 4: WYNDHAM ESTATE H'CAP - 1020M.

JUST DEVINE jumped awkwardly and lost ground.

Near the 100m., ROYAL ENTOURAGE was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of L. Morrison, rider of BUTCH WESTON.


RACE 5: GLENLOGAN PARK QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1640M.

Near the 800m., CRAFTY SCOTSMAN shifted in and made heavy contact with GRANDWAY SHOGUN.

After leaving the 600m., SHEER DEVOTION was inclined to hang out. This enabled GRANDWAY SHOGUN to obtain a run to its inside approaching the home turn.

Trainer T. Miller was questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted by M. McDonald on SHEER DEVOTION. Mr Miller stated he was surprised that the horse raced in a forward position as he had instructed M. McDonald to have the horse positioned midfield as this was the first attempt over the 1600m. distance. He added that M. McDonald had explained on return to the enclosure he was unable to settle SHEER DEVOTION behind the leaders and was obliged to move forward rounding the first turn. Mr Miller indicated that it was his intention to spell the filly. M. McDonald explained he had anticipated having SHEER DEVOTION positioned 5th or 6th approaching the first turn, however the filly was reluctant to settle and hung out and he was obliged to allow SHEER DEVOTION to stride forward. He added the filly then commenced to pull hard when racing outside DIFFICULT. The explanations were noted.

A veterinary examination of DIFFICULT revealed the gelding to have a slower than normal recovery rate. A swab sample was taken from DIFFICULT.

Due to illness, M. McDonald was unable to weigh in on 6th placegetter, SHEER DEVOTION.


RACE 6: GIANNI RESTAURANT H'CAP - 1640M.

LUNCHTIME LEGEND was hampered shortly after the start when tightened for room between XANTRA and BUSTER JONES, which shifted in after jumping away awkwardly.

At the entrance to the straight, VOLKMAN had to be steadied off the heels of FORGING'S LAD, which shifted out.

Near the 300m., when attempting to improve between TYALGLUM POP and XANTRA where there was doubtful room, I'M IN HEAVEN made contact with XANTRA, causing that horse to become unbalanced.

Z. Purton, rider of I'M IN HEAVEN, accidentally dropped his whip at the 150m..


RACE 7: AUSTRALIA DAY H'CAP - 1350M.

Prior to this race, M. McDonald was examined by the club's doctor and cleared to ride KING LOTTO in this race.

No racing incidents.



RACE 8: WESTFIELD H'CAP - 1110M.

Due to transport difficulties, K. Pope was unable to fulfil his engagement on FLASH TUNE and was replaced by R. Goltz.

FLASH TUNE shifted out abruptly on jumping away.

Approaching the 1000m., KATENIAN shifted in, taking BLUE CELESTE in on to ENZONE, which brushed the hind quarters of DESCARTES and became unbalanced.


ALL WINNERS AND DIFFICULT WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
