BRISBANE TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT.12.4.03

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr S. Railton (Chairman), Mr J. Hackett, Mr D. Hensler, Mr D. Collingwood, Mr C. Waller (Cadet).

WEATHER - FINE TRACK - DEAD RAIL - TRUE POSITION

GENERAL: Apprentice C. Karakatsanis was reprimanded for failing to ride at his nominated weight of 53 kilograms.

RACE 1: ROYAL CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION H'CAP - 1010M.

MT. GOWER was obliged to race very wide in the early and middle stages.

RACE 2:TOLL NORTH SCOMELD QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1200M.

CHARLIE CHEESE was slow to begin.

APRIL SUN jumped outwards at the start, tightening ROMANTIC NOTE on to TAHITIAN AFFAIR.

After jumping out and making contact with the hind quarters of SILVERTAIRE at the start, GAY PREDICTION then shifted back in and bumped VICTORY HIGHWAY.

After leaving the gates cleanly, GAI EXPRESS threw its head up and as a consequence lost considerable ground. Trainer R. Maund was advised that a warning was being placed on GAI EXPRESS in regard to her racing manners. Mr Maund was further advised that a repeat of this behaviour would lead to GAIR EXPRESS being barred to an official barrier trial.

When shifting in soon after the start, BABE OF THE YEAR threw its head up when steadied off the heels of CATS TANGO.

A. Spiteri, rider of TAHITIAN AFFAIR, was cautioned for allowing his mount to shift in on the first turn, resulting in SILVERTAIRE and GAY PREDICTION being placed in restricted room.

A veterinary examination of APRIL SUN following the event revealed the filly to have been galloped on on the near hind tendon and fetlock.

RACE 3: MORAITIS FRESH PRODUCE H'CAP - 1350M.

As the start was effected, ASTANA stood flatfooted and lost ground.

CHASSIS was also slow to begin.

In the early and middle stages, GRAMERCY got its head up and refused to settle as a result of the pace of the race. CHASSIS, which was trailing GRAMERCY, lost ground as a consequence.

After obtaining a narrow run to the inside of SEAFRONT at the 50m. mark, ANOTHER WARRIOR had to be steadied close to the finish line when SEAFRONT shifted back in under pressure. P. Hammersley, rider of SEAFRONT, was cautioned and advised to exercise more care.
RACE 4: INGHAM'S H'CAP - 2100M.

After passing the 1600m., SHOW MARTIAL began to race fiercely and soon afterwards shifted out off the heels of CORRETJA. A number of trailing runners were hampered as a consequence, namely DANAZEEVA, PEDRO'S POWER, FUJI BELLE and MAGRITTE.

Between the 800m and home turn, MAGRITTE was forced to race wide.

Rounding the home turn and in the home straight until near the 100m., CORRETJA was held up and unable to improve.

RACE 5: PARMALAT QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1615M.

On jumping away, LOS GATOS and HAPPY DAYOH were tightened for room between ENA'S PRIDE and SUMMER EYES, both of which shifted ground.

RULANCER jumped outwards at the start and bumped heavily with WESTERN SUCCESS.

On 2 occasions on the first turn, MISS TINKERBELLE got its head up and raced ungenerously.

RACE 6: NESTLE H'CAP - 1200M.

After being momentarily held up near the 100m., STORMY LODGE was again impeded close to the finish line due to CAISSA shifting in slightly under pressure.

EMPYREAN was also unable to obtain clear running over the final 75 metres of the event.

Trainer B. Brown and jockey J. Powell were questioned regarding the performance of CALAWAY GAL. J. Powell stated that after beginning well he took a sit on the filly and thereafter CALAWAY GAL was afforded a nice run in the event. He further indicated that when brought into the clear in the straight, the filly was immediately under pressure and after being tested with the whip he did not punish CALAWAY GAL over the latter stages of the race as she compounded quite quickly. Trainer B. Brown advised that he had stated publicly that CALAWAY GAL was not at its top as the filly's training regime had been hampered due to the restriction on the availability of grass training tracks in recent weeks due to the wet weather. Whilst stewards accepted that CALAWAY GAL'S run had ended at the 100m., J. Powell was nonetheless reprimanded for dropping his hands and failing to ride CALAWAY GAL with sufficient vigour over the concluding stages of the event. A veterinary examination of CALAWAY GAL subsequent to the event failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken from the filly.

RACE 7: COCO-COLA H'CAP - 1615M.

As D. Craven was to be overweight, permission was granted for apprentice R. Hurley to be substituted as the rider of HURRY HURRY. D. Craven was fined $100.

FORGING'S LAD got its head up and overraced on the first turn.

When questioned, S. Galloway was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of SACRA CLAUSE. He indicated that the gelding was under pressure at the 600m. and did not respond to his riding thereafter. A swab sample was taken from SACRA CLAUSE following a veterinary examination which failed to reveal any abnormality.

RACE 8: WOOLWORTHS H'CAP - 1200M.

MAXCAY jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

At the 800m., ZOE'S LAD had to be checked after pulling its way up inside the heels of TAHITIAN STAR where there was insufficient room.

For some distance in the early stages of the straight, GRANDWAY SHOGUN was held up for a run behind PICABLU. When GRANDWAY SHOGUN shifted out to obtain a narrow run which developed between PICABLU and CUPHILL approaching the 100m., PICABLU shifted out marginally, resulting in GRANDWAY SHOGUN being taken out on to CUPHILL, which in turn was tightened on to SHEER DEVOTION, which at that stage was attempting a narrow run to the inside of the tiring SIR BREAKFAST. CUPHILL and SHEER DEVOTION were both hampered in this incident.

A veterinary examination of CUPHILL failed to reveal any abnormalities.

ALL WINNERS, CALAWAY GAL AND SACRA CLAUSE WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
