BRISBANE TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 17.05.03

WEATHER – FINE TRACK - DEAD RAIL – TRUE
GOOD (After Race 4)

RACE 1: AIR NEW ZEALAND H'CAP – 1350M

MISS ASTUR, which dislodged its rider C. Munce during the preliminary, was inspected by the Club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

Passing the 1000m INTRODUCE had to be steadied to avoid the heels of MAGIQUE SKY which shifted in. M. Rodd, the rider of MAGIQUE SKY, was advised to be fully clear when shifting ground in future.

BELLE PAREZ was obliged to race wide throughout.

Near the 100m MARAUDING LASS shifted in under pressure taking AWESOME EDGE in on to BELLE PAREZ which was inconvenienced. MARAUDING LASS then continued to shift ground over the concluding stages.

A post-race veterinary examination of MISS ASTUR failed to reveal any abnormality.

RACE 2: SITA H'CAP – 1350M

NATTIE jumped away awkwardly and made contact with SPONGE BOB.

FRENCH GENTLEMAN and STRIDERITE were slow to begin.

J. Warrington, the rider of KILBRANNAN, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in after leaving the 1200m, tightening the running of SAILOR'S LARK and FRENCH GENTLEMAN.

TOP MARC raced fiercely in the early stages.

Approaching the first turn, after being steadied off the heels of RANGERS, LEVANTE lost ground. As a consequence, ARCHITRAVE had to be restrained.

Passing the 800m SPONGE BOB had to be steadied to avoid the heels of FRENCH GENTLEMAN which shifted out slightly.

In the early stages of the straight LEVANTE was held up for clear running.

RACE 3: NETWORK TEN H'CAP – 1200M

D. McLellan was fined $200 under AR 120(b) for failing to make the required weight on KING SHALFORD and was replaced by C. Newitt.

On jumping away D'ARCY DOR was hampered by SHOW BIZ KID which shifted out.

AMAIZCAY was slow to begin.

MORINGA'S MANDRAKE blundered on jumping away.

Making the first turn EL TEMPESTAD had to be steadied to avoid the heels of THE GINZA which shifted in.

BAGPIPES was forced wider on the home turn.

G. Colless, the rider of FLYINGPIG, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out making the home turn when not clear of MAY ROYAL, causing that horse to be steadied.

FEELERS was held up for clear running after leaving the 200m.

MAY ROYAL had difficulty obtaining clear running for a short distance passing the 100m.

CANTANTES also had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight.

RACE 4: NORTHERN CITY FINANCE CHAMPAGNE CLASSIC QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1200M

LITTLE PUNC was slow to begin.

IN TOP SWING jumped in at the start taking DANISH MAGIC in on to SHAMEKHA.

PARMENA jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 700m LITTLE PUNC raced in restricted room between WINDY KATE and SIR DEX and on several occasions was buffeted by WINDY KATE which shifted out.

After leaving the 600m PARMENA, ARMAMENT and SHAMEKHA all raced in restricted room to the inside of DANISH MAGIC.

Approaching the 500m PARMENA shifted out slightly, resulting in ARMAMENT becoming unbalanced when tightened on to SHAMEKHA. As a result, IN TOP SWING, which was following, shifted out abruptly to avoid the heels of ARMAMENT, taking WINDY KATE out on to LITTLE PUNC which had to be checked when taken on to the hind quarters of SIR DEX.

SIR SUCCESS was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

J. Cassidy, the rider of SHAMEKHA, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in under pressure near the 100m resulting in IN TOP SWING having to be steadied and shifting out to avoid the heels of SHAMEKHA.

After the running of Race 4 the tracking rating was upgraded to GOOD.

RACE 5: TRIPLE M DOOMBEN ROSES QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 2020M

Approaching the 1400m AQUATIC DRIVE shifted in, tightening the running of COSMETIC CROWN. WITH MY, which was following, was inconvenienced in this incident.

Approaching the 400m THE JEWEL shifted in, tightening the running of RULANCER.

RACE 6: THE WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN DOOMBEN CLASSIC QTIS ADDED STAKES – 1615M

FOUNTAIN ABBEY was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to race.

KID DE LAGO was slow to begin.

After jumping away KING OF THEM ALL blundered.

Approaching the first turn BANK NOTE raced ungenerously when being restrained.

Trainer A. Campbell was questioned as to the improved performance of BOB'S BOY compared to its efforts at the Gold Coast on 10 May. Mr Campbell stated that he had supported the horse last Saturday and was quite confident of the horse's chances, and the only excuse he could offer was that there had been a three-week gap between that start and the gelding's win at Otaki on 19 April. The explanation was noted.

A post-race veterinary examination of GRANDWAY SHOGUN failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer B. Guy advised that he would be spelling GRANDWAY SHOGUN immediately. A swab sample was taken from GRANDWAY SHOGUN.

RACE 7: CARLTON DRAUGHT DOOMBEN 10,000 – 1350M

FALVELON, which twisted its off fore plate in its raceday stalls, was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

TIT FOR TAAT was slow to begin.

A charge of careless riding against D. Gauci, the rider of YELL, was not sustained when it was established that, whilst D. Gauci had permitted his mount to shift in after leaving the 1200m, taking SPINNING HILL in on to DIAMOND DANE, a short distance later, B. Stewart, the rider of DIAMOND DANE, permitted his mount to shift in resulting in THIS MANSHOOD, which was racing in restricted room, having to be checked. Whilst stewards accepted that YELL's initial shift inwards had caused tightening to DIAMOND DANE, they were of the opinion that D. Gauci was not entirely responsible for the interference suffered by THIS MANSHOOD. In the circumstances, D. Gauci was reprimanded.

D. Gauci, the rider of YELL, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in over the concluding stages resulting in FALVELON having to be steadied.

RACE 8: CLARION HOTEL POWERHOUSE CHAIRMAN'S H'CAP – 2020M

After passing the 600m RAW INSTINCT had to be steadied when attempting to improve to the outside of the heels of EVANDER.

Approaching the 300m KREISLER MIRAGE was hampered when tightened for room between WE'RE DANCING and RAW INSTINCT which shifted out. M. Rodd, the rider of RAW INSTINCT, was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure he provides sufficient room for runners when shifting ground.

Apprentice M. Dracos, the rider of MIDNIGHT DEAL, sought an adjournment to call his master and jockey J. Powell, the rider of FOREST JIM, after being charged with careless riding which resulted in THE KILDARE KID having to be checked near the 200m. The inquiry will be resumed prior to the first race at Eagle Farm on Wednesday, 21 May.

Trainer A. Bailey was questioned as to the improved performance of ANOTHER WARRIOR compared with the colts eleventh at the Gold Coast on 10 May 2003. Mr. Bailey stated that he could offer no excuse for ANOTHER WARRIOR and he was very disappointed with the performance adding also that the colt seems to perform better at Doomben.
