Race 1: THE MASK QTIS H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Jamelden Cat 2nd – Tears’n’cheers 3rd – Alioop 4th – Helado
GUNS (A. Spinks), which struck the running rail travelling to the barriers, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.
VOODOO BAY MAGIC (B. Pengelly) was also examined behind the barriers and cleared to race.
ALIOOP (P. Hammersley) jumped away awkwardly.
TEARS’N’CHEERS (G. Colless) jumped out at the start and made contact with COMETAPUPPA (M. Palmer).
Shortly after the start COMETAPUPPA and ALIOOP were cramped for room between AUDIT (J. Byrne) and TEARS’N’CHEERS which shifted out.
Near the 1100m COMETAPUPPA, which had been racing in restricted room for some distance, made contact with the hind quarters of TEARS’N’CHEERS, causing that horse to shift out and COMETAPUPPA having to be checked.
ROLLINS (S. Seamer) and GUNS both raced three wide throughout.
Passing the 800m TEARS’N’CHEERS was inclined to race ungenerously. TEARS’N’CHEERS continued to race ungenerously for some distance in the middle stages. HELADO (J. Holder), which was following, was inconvenienced as a result.
Near the 600m TEARS’N’CHEERS shifted in and made heavy contact with the running rail.
Near the 500m TEARS’N’CHEERS attempted to shift out away from the rails and made contact with ALIOOP.
Approaching the 300m RICH BABY (S. Scriven) shifted out to improve and made heavy contact with GUNS. S. Scriven was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Following the event G. Colless reported that TEARS’N’CHEERS was at no stage comfortable racing on the rails inside horses in the middle stages.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of AUDIT, jockey J. Byrne stated that connections had instructed him to ride the horse a little quieter today as opposed to the horse’s previous start when it led at Caloundra. He added that the horse did not appear to travel well and was inclined to hang in in the straight, not finishing the race off as expected. Stewards intend to question trainer M. Webb as to the disappointing performance of the horse and the change in riding tactics today. A post-race veterinary examination of AUDIT revealed no abnormalities.
Race 2: CARLTON DRAUGHT H’CAP - 1640m
1st – Perfect Feeling 2nd – Rash Promise 3rd – Little Imp 4th – Our Jangles
POIYM (M. Palmer) was slow to jump.
LITTLE IMP (M. Radecker) shifted out to improve leaving the 500m and brushed RASH PROMISE (J. Byrne).
Race 3: LYNDHURST STUD 0MW LY H’CAP - 1640m
1st – Secrets Untold 2nd – Nevada Gambler 3rd – Kintyre Conquest 4th – Feelin Dandy
KINTYRE CONQUEST (J. Taylor) was a little slow to jump.
BARCLAYS (K. Wharton) was inclined to pull hard in the middle stages.
DAVION (R. Wiggins) was trapped three wide rounding the first turn and raced three wide for the majority of the event.
SECRETS UNTOLD (S. Seamer) was inclined to lay in in the middle stages.
Jockey B. El-Issa had difficulty testing POWER’N’WATER in the straight due to its tendency to hang in.
Leaving the 200m COSSANTE (A. Spinks) was tightened for room between ALIFLY (J. Holder) and POWER’N’WATER (B. El-Issa), which was hanging in despite the efforts of its rider.
Race 4: THE FUN FACTORY H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Magic Promenade 2nd – Falcrest 3rd – Nepro 4th – Gun Belle
PLAYGROUND EXPRESS (J. Holder) was very slow to jump.
When the pace slowed leaving the 700m FALCREST (S. Seamer) had to be steadied when it improved on to the heels of METER MAID (M. Radecker). Also as a result of the pace being slow, KENSHE (S. Galloway), SERENOTE (M. Cahill) and PLAYGROUND EXPRESS were all inconvenienced.
Near the 250m MAGIC PROMENADE (J. Jones) and FALCREST brushed when both attempted to take a similar run between MY FIRST AFFAIR (G. Colless) and NEPRO (J. Byrne).
KENSHE was held up for clear running in the straight.
DELL AMBY (K. Wharton) had difficulty obtaining clear running over the concluding stages.
Race 5: KUNG FU PANDA H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Sommersea Drive 2nd – Hesashow 3rd – Honour Winna 4th – Murphy’s Creek
COGNISANT was a late scratching at 10.13 a.m. by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice.
THREE SWALLOWS (A. Taylor) was hampered on jumping away between MR DOYLE (J. Taylor), which shifted in slightly, and SOMMERSEA DRIVE (S. Cormack), which shifted out.
GO SEQUALO (S. Scriven) pulled hard in the run to the first turn.
REBOUNDED (M. Radecker) and THREE SWALLOWS raced three wide throughout.
OCTOBER SKY (J. Jones) was inclined to lay in in the straight.
A post-race veterinary examination of GO SEQUALO revealed the gelding to be sore in the near hind leg. Trainer B. Baldwin was advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided before the horse races again.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of THREE SWALLOWS and the riding tactics adopted, apprentice A. Taylor stated that she had been instructed to ride the horse forward or wherever comfortable. She added that after being crowded on jumping away the horse could not muster pace in the first 100 metres, so as a result of being trapped wide from her wide draw she elected to take hold and shift in nearer the rails, however when attempting to restrain the horse it commenced to overrace. She added that as a result she was placed three wide with cover, however the horse did not finish the race off as expected. Trainer J. Thomas confirmed the instructions and stated the horse may not have been suited by being caught wide from its wide draw and that its best form has been on firm tracks.
Race 6: CADBURY CONFECTIONERY QTIS H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Abirra 2nd – Burdekin Blues 3rd – Rumba Jack 4th – Pride Of Power
NATIONAL SOLIDER (K. Wharton) was cramped shortly after the start between RUMBA JACK (A. Taylor), which was taken out by STRESSO (R. Wiggins), and NICOLO SEQUALO (J. Jones) and ABIRRA (J. Taylor), which were taken in by JAD (P. Hammersley).
Passing the 800m AGNES DREAM (G. Colless) was momentarily cramped for room by NICOLO SEQUALO which shifted in slightly away from KHASAHN (B. El-Issa).
SAND RULER (J. Holder) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Near the 150m MASTER HUGH (S. Galloway) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of AGNES DREAM which shifted out.
KHASAHN compounded over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the filly had ruptured a tendon in the off foreleg. Trainer A. Donnelly was advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided before the horse races again.
Race 7: IN LOVING MEMORY OF RONALD WICKS H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Bitabiff 2nd – Master Denis 3rd – General Patton 4th – Tornadic Sky
POLAR BEAR (S. Scriven) missed the start.
BABINDA HALF (J. Jones) jumped out at the start and made contact with PHOENIX EXPRESS (P. Hammersley).
THE BIG EASY (J. Holder) and PROSECUTION (M. Palmer) jumped away awkwardly.
TELLASECRET (A. Spinks) was caught three wide after the start and raced three wide throughout.
Near the 1100m THE BIG EASY had to be steadied to avoid the heels of GENERAL PATTON (J. Byrne) which shifted in.
Race 8: CITY PACIFIC FINANCE 1MW H’CAP - 1110m
1st – Ben Hur 2nd – Dillinger 3rd – Borsha’s Warrior 4th – Pagan County
As C. Spry was ill, B. El-Issa was substituted as the rider of THE HAND.
Stewards questioned jockey S. Seamer as to striking AADELAIDEE on the rump in the saddling enclosure prior to the race after being dislodged. S. Seamer stated that he gave the horse one crack around the rump as it was running backwards towards the gate as he was concerned that the horse may injure itself.
Near the 900m COCCOLARE (A. Spinks) was cramped for room by THE HAND (B. El-Issa) which shifted inside the heels of PAGAN COUNTY (K. Wharton) which had to be steadied when improving on to the heels of BEN HUR (J. Taylor).
BORSHA’S WARRIOR (J. Jones) was trapped three wide on the first turn and was obliged to race three wide throughout.
FLEETING ECHO (M. Palmer) was also trapped three wide and raced three wide throughout.
SAMUI STAR (J. Byrne) was inclined to overrace for some distance near the 800m.
ULLADULLA (G. Colless) proved difficult to test over the concluding stages due to its tendency to lay in.
GENERAL
Stewards at Toowoomba questioned trainer M. Webb on behalf of the Doomben stewards in relation to the disappointing performance of AUDIT in Race 1 and the variation in riding tactics today. As to the riding tactics, M. Webb stated that the tactics at Caloundra were to be similar to today, however on that occasion the horse jumped extremely well and as a consequence was positioned forward rather than being mid-field as anticipated. As to the disappointing performance, Mr Webb indicated that he would recommend to the owners that the horse be spelled.
