Race 1: Poolrite Diamond Kleen Maidne Plate - 2050m
1st –Lander 2nd – Motive 3rd – Suave Consort 4th – Lovers Truce

OCEAN OUTLAW was declared a late scratching at 8.15 am on veterinary advice.

LADY SHADY (A. Merritt) began awkwardly.

When the pace slackened near the 1600m, SUAVE CONSORT (B. Stewart) shifted out off the heels of GURKHAS (M. Hughes), taking MOTIVE (S. Galloway) 3 deep for a short distance.

When the pace again slackened near the 1200m, both SUAVE CONSORT (B. Stewart) and GURKHAS (M. Hughes) improved to the inside of LANDER (S. Scriven). LANDER then shifted in slightly, resulting in GURKHAS being tightened for room and becoming unbalanced.

The connections of LADY SHADY (A. Merritt), which tailed off, were advised that mare would be barrred from metropolitan racing until until it showed improved form in country areas.

When questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on MOTIVE, in particular his decision not to commence to improve 3 wide earlier than he had done so in order to take up a position closer to his main opposition, LANDER, which had taken up a leading position approaching the 800m, S. Galloway stated that he was advised by connections that MOTIVE only possessess a short sprint and in consideration of this information he felt it was in the gelding’s best interests to trail SUAVE CONSORT into the race and afford his mount clear running from the top of the straight rather than commence a 3-wide move 700 metres from the finish line. The explanation was noted.

Race 2: Austin Pool Services 2yo Maiden Plate – 1110m
1st –Hilton Head 2nd – Spinelli 3rd – Miss Rio 4th – Flying To China

INTO THE DARK proved difficult to load and raced greenly throughout. Trainer K. Stabe was advised that the colt must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

UNSWEPT (R. Wiggins) jumped outwards at the start, making contact with INTO THE DARK (C. McIver).

HOT SHOT HENRY (J. Wood) and SPIFFING (D. Brown) made contact on jumping away.

DOIN’ DEALS (S. Galloway) was slow to begin.

MOVE TO THE GROOVE (J. Bates) jumped outwards at the start, making contact with the hind quarters of SPINELLI (N. Seymour), resulting in SPINELLI shifting in, tightening the running of MOVE TO THE GROOVE. MOVE TO THE GROOVE then had a tendency to buck and shifted to the outside fence, taking no further competitive part in the race thereafter. Trainer G. Heinrich was advised that MOVE TO THE GROOVE must trial satisfactoriliy prior to its next race start.

Near the 450m, LOVE ARIA (K. Forrester), which was reluctant to race to the inside of SPINELLI, shifted out and had to be steadied from the heels of that filly.

UNSWEPT (R. Wiggins) raced wide for the majority of the race.

Race 3: Rothwell Pools Maiden Plate - 1350m

The connections of MILLIE MISS (A. Merritt), which tailed off, were advised that mare would be barred from racing in the metropolitan area until it showed improved form in country areas.

When questioned regarding her riding of PURE ACT in the early stages where it appeared that the gelding lost contact with the main body of the field, S. Drake stated that she was attempting to urge the horse forward at that stage howevever PURE ACT failed to resopnd to her riding until the early stages of the straight where the horse balanced up and finished the race off well. S. Drake added that, in her opinion, PURE ACT is looking for further distance in its races.

Race 4: Poolrite Magnapool 3yo Maiden Plate - 1350m
1st - Lauxes 2nd – Bootooloo 3rd – Jess Sar Belle 4th – Tell Jean

YOURSNMINE (L. Cheshire) were slow to begin.

Near the 600m, BARMAZAL (D. Brown),which was overracing, struck the heels of LITTLE PIIGEN (C. McIver) and blundered, losing ground. YOURSNMINE, which was racing to the inside, was hampered as a consequence.

STALWART FLIGHT (D. Griffin) overraced in the early stages.

CAMBER D’ORSAY (A. Merritt) was inclined to lay in rounding the home turn.

Leaving the 200m, STALWART FLIGHT and LAUXES (O. Turpin) made contact .

Race 7: Poolrite Equipment F&M Class 3 H'cap - 1110m
1st – Falling Star 2nd – Calm Before 3rd – Hello Christmas 4th - Falvalea

ICE DELIGHT (J. Taylor) and USTINO A GIRL (C. McIver) were slow to begin.

Jockey L. Cheshire, rider of MARAQUITAS, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that near the 1000m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of FALLING STAR (D. Barron), resulting in that horse being checked when tightened for room between MARAQUITAS and HELLO CHRISTMAS (T. Treichel). L. Cheshire was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 18 July and to expire at midnight, 30 July 2009.

For some distance leaving the 800m, USTINO A GIRL (C. McIver) overraced at the heels of FALLING STAR (D. Barron).

Leaving the 500m, USTINO A GIRL improved on to the heels of FALLING STAR and had to be steadied.

CALM BEFORE (S. Scriven) and ICE DELIGHT (J. Taylor) were both held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight.

Near the 200m, HIRSUTE (M. Speers), which was tiring considerably, had to be steadied when tightened for room between SEETHING DUCK (M. Hughes) and HELLO CHRISTMAS (T. Treichel), both of which shifted ground.

Leaving the 200m, FALVALEA (B. Stewart) had to be checked after improving on to the heels of the tiring MARAQUITAS.

HIRSUTE (M. Speers) and SEETHING DUCK (M. Hughes) raced wide for the majority of the race.

Stewards questioned apprentice C. McIver regarding his riding of USTINO A GIRL in the straight. C. McIver stated that he had been disappointed for a run in the early stages between ARCTIC ECHO (J. Wood) and FALLING STAR (D. Barron) as a result of ICE DELIGHT (J. Taylor) shifting out to take that run. C. McIver added that from that stage he was held up between ARCTIC ECHO and ICE DELIGHT and was unable to fully test his mount. Whilst stewards acknowledged C. McIver’s difficulties in obtaining clear running in the early stages of the straight, he was advised that he should make greater efforts to pursue other options to improve his position.

Race 8: Poolrite Polytropic Heat Pump CGE Class 3 H'cap - 1110m
1st –Jovelon 2nd – Fiamore 3rd – Dubbus 4th - Isaidiam

FEELINE HUNTER (M. Speers) was slow to begin.

STRUMMING (D. Tanti) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

FIAMORE (A. Pattillo) jumped outwards at the start, making contact with DUBBUS (R. Wiggins).

STRUMMING (D. Tanti) was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

ISAIDIAM (A. Merritt) had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the straight.

REORIENTATE (D. Griffin), CITIWYSE (G. Geran) and FEELINE HUNTER (M. Speers) all raced wide for the majority of the event.

Stewards questioned M. Speers regarding the tactics employed on FELINE HUNTER after that horse had missed the start noticeably. M. Speers stated that he had been given specific instructions to have the horse in a handy position and whilst he was conscious of the horse’s tardiness from the gates, he was also instructed that the horse had a tendency to overrace when back in the field, and he felt it was in the horse’s best interests to improve FELINE HUNTER’S position forward in the early stages and take up a handy position. M. Spers further added that in doing so he was forced to race 3 wide without cover for a major portion of the race. Whilst stewards acknowledged that M. Speers was riding to instructions, he was nevertheless advised that in circumstances such as this, he should exercise greater discretion and consider alternative options.

A post-race veterinary examination of FELINE HUNTER revealed the horse had broken down in the near hind leg. Trainer B. Baldwin was advised he must provide a veterinary clearance for FELINE HUNTER prior to its next race start.
