From QTC, 5.11.09 – Race 3
Trainer M. Thexton reported she had SNAKESONAPLANE scoped following its performance and there was evidence of a lung infection. She further advised that she intended to have another endoscopic examined done and depending on the results she would decide whether to proceed with the horse’s campaign or spell the horse.

App. M. Speers was issued a reprimand for using his whip 6 times prior to the 100m – AR137A(5)(a)(i)

Jockey J. Holder was issued with a reprimand for using his whip 6 times prior the 100m. In issuing a reprimand only stewards took into account this was J. Holder’s first offence for whip related matters. AR137A(5)(a)(i)

Race 1: Mack Trucks Australia QTIS 3yo H'cap - 1640m
1st – Catallion 2nd – Favours Traded 3rd – Lunar Rose 4th - Coroner
Approaching the first turn, SILVER TRUMP (J. Taylor) commenced to overrace at the heels of GET UPPITY (B. Stewart) and the horse continue to overrace for some distance.
After leaving the 1200m, SANDERSON (J. Byrne) overraced at the heels of DUSTY’S FELT (C. Reith). MR TRACEY (M. Hellyer), which was trailing, was also inconvenienced when it improved on to the heels of SANDERSON.
FAVOURS TRADED (G. Colless) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
Near the 250m, DUSTY’S FELT had to be checked when disappointed for a run where there was not fully sufficient room between POISED FOR SUCCESS (B. Pengelly), which shifted in slightly and DARK KNIGHT (A. Best) which shifted out away from FAVOURS TRADED (G. Colless) when that horse was taken out by LUNAR ROSE, which was inclined to shift ground under pressure. J. Bowditch, rider of LUNAR ROSE, was instructed to take greater measures to prevent his mounts shifting ground in the run to the finish.
J. Holder, rider of BIG BOORI, was cautioned for permitting his mount to shift out near the 200m, taking FAVOURS TRADED (G. Colless) out on to DARK KNIGHT.
BIG BOORI (J. Holder) was caught wide on the first turn and raced 3 wide for the majority of the event.
A post-race veterinary examination of MR TRACEY (M. Hellyer), which was inclined to hang out in the race, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 2: DGL (Aust) QTIS 600 2yo H'cap - 1030m
1st –Ringa Ringa Rosie 2nd – Jantzen 3rd – Turnitup 4th – Marking Time
FURIOUS LEE (M. Speers) jumped away awkwardly and missed the start.
After leaving the 800m, RINGA RINGA ROSIE (C. Reith) had to be checked when tightened for room by MARKING TIME (G. Colless), which after improving to the inside of TURNITUP (D. Brown), shifted in away from TURNITUP as a result of racing greenly.
Approaching the home turn, MARKING TIME (G. Colless) shifted out off the heels of CHOSEN TO FLY (M. Hughes), forcing FURIOUS LEE (M. Speers) wider.
COUNT SPUR (P. Hammersley), when under pressure, shifted in and made heavy contact with the running rail near the 100m.
CHOSEN TO FLY (M. Hughes) was inclined to hang out for the majority of the event.
GOLD RECORD lost its near fore plate in running.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of COUNT SPUR, trainer B. Guy stated that after discussing the run with jockey P. Hammersley he agreed that the horse may not be concentrating and that he would experiment with blinkers on the horse. A post-race veterinary examination of COUNT SPUR failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Mr Guy advised that he would notify stewards of any abnormality that may come to light that may have had an effect on the run today.
Race 3: Hills IN Hollywood Class 6 H'cap - 1640m
1st – Seesawing 2nd – Showciti 3rd – Tarrayoukyan 4th – Our Scooby Doo
KINSMATE (B. Pengelly) jumped away awkwardly.
WARRIOR WITHIN (P. Hammersley) improved onto the heels of KINSMATE (B. Pengelly) approaching the first turn and had to be steadied.
TARRAYOUKYAN (L. Cassidy) was caught 3 wide rounding the first turn before assuming a position outside the leader near the 1000m.
Near the 300m, COSTA MUCHO (J. Holder) was inclined to lay in on to the heels of SEESAWING (J. Byrne).
OUR SCOOBY DOO (A. Pattillo) was inclined to lay in over the concluding stages of the race.
Near the finish line, LEZANT (S. Bogenhuber) had to be steadied when cramped for room between EMBANK (J. Bowditch) and TARRAYOUKYAN (L. Cassidy).
Jockey J. Taylor, rider of JENNABEE, was reprimanded for using his whip on one occasion in excess of the permitted 5 prior to the 100m.
Race 4: Volvo Australia Open H'cap - 2220m
1st –Onalar 2nd – Roy’s Legacy 3rd – Beartracker 4th - Drumshanbo
B. Pengelly, rider of PAY ME, was fined $200 for attempting to weigh out without his safety vest. When assessing penalty, stewards were satisfied that B. Pengelly’s negligence was not to obtain a weight advantage as PAY ME was weighted at 56.5 kgs.
SINGING SOVEREIGN (J. Taylor) was tightened for room on jumping away between LEONARDO (M. Speers) and ONALAR (C. Reith), which jumped outwards.
Near the winning post on the first occasion, LEONARDO (M. Speers), which was inclined to pull hard, had to be steadied off the heels of YIELD CURVE (B. El-Issa).
A post-race veterinary examination of LEONARDO revealed the horse to have ruptured its near fore flexor tendons.
Race 5: ‘yes’ Optus Class 6 H'cap - 1030m
1st – Gag Order 2nd – Backstabber 3rd – Seething Duck 4th – Pride Of Power
BEN HUR (S. Scriven) and GAG ORDER (M. Speers) brushed on jumping away.
PRIDE OF POWER (B. Pengelly) and JE NE SAIS PAS (D. Craven) were caught wide on the first turn and obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.
Near the 600m, PRIDE OF POWER (B. Pengelly) hung in momentarily tightening FALCO STAR (C. McIver). EMBRACING (A. Pattillo), which was following had to be steadied in this incident.
On straightening FALCO STAR (C. McIver) shifted out to improve and made contact with JAD (P. Hammersley).
Close to the finish line MEET GEORGE (J. Bowditch) was cramped for room between STEEL LIPS and BEN HUR, which shifted out under pressure.
BACKSTABBER (B. Stewart) raced 3 wide without cover throughout the race.
GAG ORDER (M. Speers) and PRIDE OF POWER (B. Pengelly) also raced wide throughout the race.
When questioned regarding the performance of STEEL LIPS, L. Cassidy stated that in order to obtain a position he had to make use of the horse in the early stages and when asked for an effort on straightening STEEL LIPS could not accelerate under its big weight. L. Cassidy added that despite that he was not entirely disappointed with the horse’s run today. Trainer S. Ryan explained that the horse had missed a barrier trial in preparation for this campaign and felt that STEEL LIPS would take benefit from today’s race. He added that the horse’s best form has been on rain affected tracks.
Race 6: House Of Cruising Class 6 H'cap - 1200m
1st – Sword Of Damocles 2nd – Another Takeover 3rd – The Crusader 4th - Intertheblack
INTERTHEBLACK (M. Speers) and MR TOMBOLA (B. Powell) were slow to begin.
Approaching the first turn, EQUATES (C. McIver) improved on to the heels of THE CRUSADER (J. Bowditch) and had to be checked when the pace eased.
Also approaching the first turn MONASHEE WARRIOR (R. McMahon) had to be steadied off the heels of LEAPFROG (L. Rolls).
MONTGRESIN (A. Spinks), HELLO CHRISTMAS (M. Palmer) and COME SAID THE BOY (M. Hellyer) raced wide for the majority of the event.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CAT D’ANTIBES, G. Colless was unable to offer any excuses, and trainer G. Heinrich indicated she would have a series of tests carried out on the horse, including a scoping and ECG, and that she would provide the results of those tests to stewards. A post-race veterinary examination of CAT D’ANTIBES failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
A post-race veterinary examination of HELLO CHRISTMAS revealed a small laceration to its muzzle.
Race 7: Zig Zag Foundation Open H'cap - 1350m
1st – Zahas Pride 2nd – Rasmussen 3rd – Mitanni 4th - Pepperwood
DEACON (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.
SOUTHERLY IMPACT jumped away awkwardly and missed the start.
S Scriven, rider of SOUTHERLY IMPACT, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that near the 1200m he attempted to force a run to the inside of DANCE GIRL DANCE (R. McMahon) where there was insufficient room and as a result struck the hind quarters of DANCE GIRL DANCE. SOUTHERLY IMPACT then made contact with the running rail and had to be checked, losing valuable ground. S. Scriven was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight 7 November and to expire at midnight, 18 November 2009.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of FASLIYEV DANCER, J. Holder stated that the horse travelled well outside the leader however when asked for an effort from the 500m it did not respond to his riding and did not finish th erace off as expected. Trainer’s representative Mrs K. Loy agreed that the performance was disappointing today and that she would monitor the horse’s recovery to ascertain if the horse would be spelled or proceed with its current preparation. A post-race veterinary examination of FASLIYEV DANCER failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of ZAHAS PRIDE, trainer M. Nolan stated that following its 7th of 12 at Doomben on 24 October, he had pathology tests carried out on the horse and these tests showed no abnormalities in the blood profiles and he was at a loss to explain the horse’s run on that occasion.
Race 8: ‘yes’ Optus NNW H'cap - 1350m
1st – Life’s Short 2nd – Aquaterra 3rd –Charter Boat 4th – Proscenium Arch
ELEVENTH COMMAND (A. Spinks) and SOMEWHERE SAFER (B. Powell) were slow to begin.
SOMEWHERE SAFER was inclined to overrace rounding the first turn.
AQUATERRA (D. Brown) was hampered rounding the first turn when ALL STELLAR (M. Speers), which had been overracing, commenced to lose ground and this resulted in AQUATERRA losing a favourable position obtained earlier in the race.
TIGHTROPE (L. Cassidy) was inclined to overrace on the first turn. SOMEWHERE SAFER and BERNARDO (B. Stewart), which were following, were inconvenienced.
Near the 500m, CUBAN DANCER (M. Palmer) was cramped for room between AQUATERRA (D. Brown), which shifted out slightly and TIGHTROPE (L. Cassidy) which shifted in away from ANOTHER SPEIGHTS (J. Byrne).
HEARTY LAUGHTER (M. Hellyer), RED FERMENTS (L. Rolls), ANOTHER SPEIGHTS (J. Byrne) and BERNARDO (B. Stewart) all raced wide in the middle stages.
FRISCO MISS (C. McIver) hung out rounding the home turn and continued to do so in the run to the finish.
Stewards questioned Mr C. Partington, representative of trainer R. Bradshaw, regarding the seemingly improved performance of LIFE’S SHORT in winning today as compared to its previous start at Doomben on 24 October. Mr Partington stated that the horse had dropped back in distance and was of the opinion the horse did not run out the mile at its previous start and was better suited by the distance of today’s race.
When questioned regarding the performance of TIGHT ROPE, L. Cassidy stated that after beginning well he had the horse positioned where it was comfortable, however the pace slowed and the horse then commenced to overrace and he felt the horse was not suited by the pattern of the race. He added that whilst the horse did appear disappointing he was not entire dissatisfied with the performance given the pattern of the race.
