Race 1: PROSAFE H’CAP - 1350m
1st - Schillinsworth 2nd - Panningen 3rd – Lots Of Heart 4th – Bear’sagun

DOUBLE LINES (A. Spinks) was slow to begin.

BEAR’SAGUN (M. Hellyer) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

DANE’S INSIGNIA (Matthew Palmer) raced three wide throughout without cover.

Approaching the 800m LOTS OF HEART (S. Galloway) commenced to overrace and had to be restrained to avoid the heels of SCHILLINSWORTH (C. Munce). LOTS OF HEART shifted out which resulted in VILLAGE COMMAND (J. Taylor) being hampered.

Rounding the home turn BEAR’SAGUN was held up and unable to improve.

Race 2: NITTO H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Free To Roam 2nd – Win A Million 3rd – Allure Spender 4th – Sunshine Lass

FREE TO ROAM (C. Munce) jumped awkwardly and lost some ground.

ZADAR (J. Bowditch) was slow to begin.

MISS RIO (B. Stewart), MACUSHNA (R. Wiggins), HAVEN PRINCESS (M. Hellyer) and FREE TO ROAM all overraced in the early stages.

SUNSHINE LASS (A. Spinks) raced three wide without cover throughout.

Rounding the turn MISS RIO had to be steadied when tightened for room between MACUSHNA and BRIDAL GIFT (M. Cahill), which shifted in slightly.

Stewards questioned Mr T. Edmonds, stable foreman for trainer Mr J. Thompson, regarding the improved performance of FREE TO ROAM. Mr Edmonds explained that the horse has only been in the stables at the Gold Coast for a couple of weeks and had worked well since arriving. Mr Edmonds added that he expected that FREE TO ROAM would be better suited over a longer distance than today’s race and as a result he was not overly confident of the filly’s winning chances.

Race 3: UVEX H’CAP - 1010m
1st - Tafeer 2nd – Baroque Pearl 3rd – Calemore 4th - Bikinsky

BAROQUE PEARL (M. Cahill) shifted out at the start resulting in STALWART EMMA (J. Holder) being taken out on to SWEET INTEGRITY (A. Nicholls) and SHOWME THEDIAMONDS (J. Stanley), both of which were hampered.

When overracing in the middle stages of the race STALWART EMMA was inclined to hang out.

CALEMORE (C. Munce) raced three wide without cover throughout.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight TAFEER (D. Browne) was held up when unable to obtain clear running.

A post-race veterinary examination of FORUM (Matthew Palmer), which weakened badly in the home straight, revealed the filly to be shin sore in the off foreleg. Trainer T. Webb was advised that he must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness for FORUM prior to that filly racing again.

Race 4: DURACELL H’CAP - 1010m
1st – Master Fibba 2nd – Spello 3rd – All That 4th – Notable

Leaving the 500m CZARWHO (M. Hellyer) shifted in and away from ALL THAT (T. Treichel) and made contact with the running rail.

After passing the 200m CZARWHO shifted out under pressure taking NOTABLE (M. Speers) out on to WHICH WAY (R. Wiggins) which was momentarily inconvenienced.

COUSINE ISLAND (J. Taylor) raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from B. Pengelly regarding his riding of SPELLO in the early stages where the gelding settled back in the field, which was in contrast to its most recent start. B. Pengelly explained that he was instructed to ride SPELLO where comfortable and after beginning only fairly, rather than ride the gelding aggressively he elected to attempt to obtain cover and after doing this the gelding lost further ground when racing greenly. B. Pengelly added that SPELLO in his view is still immature and will be better suited in races over a longer distance.

Rider R. Wiggins was questioned regarding the performance of WHICH WAY after that colt weakened badly in the home straight. R. Wiggins explained that WHICH WAY travelled well until upon straightening, however when placed under pressure, WHICH WAY raced very greenly and failed to respond to his riding. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Following the running of Race 4, the track was upgraded to GOOD 3 retrospective to the running of the race.

Race 5: REDUCTOUR H’CAP – 1350m
1st - Showit 2nd – Ashma’s Gold 3rd - Layadelago 4th – Arctic Echo

LAYADELAGO (C. Munce) jumped very awkwardly and lost ground and was then hampered a short distance after the start by ARCTIC ECHO (L. Cassidy) which shifted out.

OFTEN WRONG (J. Holder) was slow to begin.

Approaching the 1200m CHAR INNOCENT (D. Griffin), which was racing ungenerously, shifted in and away from SHOWIT (K. Forrester). This resulted in ASHMA’S GOLD (J. Byrne) being crowded for room.

C. Munce reported on scale that he was instructed to ride LAYADELAGO either in the lead or in a forward position, however he was unable to do this after the filly jumped awkwardly and lost ground.

Some distance after passing the winning post ZAHNOOCHI faltered. As a result, rider D. Browne dismounted. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the near fore fetlock. Trainer L. Birchley was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary certificate of fitness for the mare prior to racing again.

Race 6: CRC H’CAP - 1110m
1st – Moss Flyer 2nd – Alberton Park 3rd – Zebakwe 4th - Mossvana

HESASHOW was a late scratching at 3.29 p.m. after that gelding was unable to be loaded. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on HESASHOW be refunded with deductions of 9 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 10 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets to apply. Trainer J. Bayliss was advised that he must obtain two barrier certificates for HESASHOW, one of which must be by performing satisfactorily in an official barrier trial.

MOSS FLYER (S. Galloway) and MOSSVANA (J. Taylor) were tightened at the start between ALBERTON PARK (J. Byrne) and SWELL (J. Holder), which shifted out.

SWELL overraced in the early stages.

CHEEKYSUE (C. Munce) had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight, and approaching the 100m was inconvenienced when tightened for room between SEQSATIONAL (M. Speers) and ANY WONDER (R. Hinricks), which shifted out slightly under pressure.

Race 7: BLACKWOODS H’CAP - 1615m
1st – Embank 2nd – Armstrong Jones 3rd – American Gangster 4th - Yamarjie

A post-race veterinary examination of HOWGOODSTHAT, which weakened badly over the final 500m, revealed a small laceration on the inside of the near nostril. Trainer J. Walk advised stewards upon returning to his stable that an endoscopic examination revealed the presence of an ulcer in the horse’s throat and indicated that the mare would be spelled immediately. Stewards advised J. Walk that a veterinary certificate of fitness for HOWGOODSTHAT would have to be produced before the mare’s next start.

Race 8: BOSCH H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Duke Ivor 2nd – Jungle Heat 3rd – Rock Rave 4th – Oscar The Great

BRAVE THE WAY (J. Bowditch) was slow to begin.

BALDY MOUNT (M. Hellyer) overraced in the early and middle stages and leaving the 700m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of BRAVE THE WAY.

Rounding the home turn and in the straight, BRAVE THE WAY was held up and unable to obtain clear running. As a result, BRAVE THE WAY went to the line not fully tested.

Approaching the 200m START AGAIN (C. Munce) was tightened for room by TROMBONE ALLEY (Michael Palmer) which shifted in when not fully clear. Apprentice M. Palmer was advised to ensure he provides sufficient clearance when shifting ground in the future.

Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce regarding the performance of START AGAIN. C. Munce explained that the gelding did not seem to appreciate racing inside horses in the early stages and he was unable to ride START AGAIN out in his normal manner in the home straight, as he was initially being held up for clear running and then tightened for room near the 200m. Following this he was of the opinion that START AGAIN worked to the line well. C. Munce added that he was of the view that START AGAIN would be better suited in races up to 1600m.

B. El-Issa, the rider of MR BOOGIEWOOGIE, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out to the end of the race.
