Race 1: HARDY BROTHERS H’CAP - 1110m
1st – Imagery 2nd – Drum Run 3rd – Sequalo Revenge 4th – Regal Ruben
Connections advised that, from the wide barrier, it would be the intention to have NORTH VEGAS ridden back in the field.
DRUM RUN (B. El-Issa) and IMAGERY (S. Katsidis) were slow to begin.
Shortly after the start SEQUALO REVENGE (D. Griffin) shifted in and had to be steadied off the heels of ALL THAT (M. Speers).
For some distance after passing the 900m IMAGERY raced in restricted room between DRUM RUN and REGAL RUBEN (M. Cahill), which was shifting in slightly. Near the 800m IMAGERY was restrained when racing between DRUM RUN and REGAL RUBEN.
GROUNDSHAKER (J. Byrne) raced wide throughout without cover and was inclined to hang out in the middle stages.
Approaching the 100m both SEQUALO REVENGE and ALL THAT had to be eased when tightened for room by DRUM RUN which shifted in under pressure when not sufficiently clear. Jockey B. El-Issa, the rider of DRUM RUN, was issued with a severe reprimand and advised to stop riding and straighten his mounts sooner than he did on this occasion in future.
Race 2: MIMIKI H’CAP - 1110m
1st – Accounting 2nd – Dancing Duo 3rd – Dubailand 4th – Ease On By
ACCOUNTING (C. Munce) was slow to begin.
BIKINSKY (J. Taylor) and PEACHY BABY (K. Sawyers) jumped in the air at the start.
VIPERA GOLD (W. Moore) and BITASUGA (D. Tanti) made contact on jumping away.
BIKINSKY raced greenly in the early stages.
Approaching the 800m ACCOUNTING, when being restrained, shifted out and made contact with TRIBUTE TO VALOUR (M. Hellyer).
BIKINSKY raced wide throughout without cover.
DOIN' DEALS (B. Stewart) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from S. Katsidis regarding the performance of CALEMORE. S. Katsidis explained that the filly began only fairly and was forced to raced wide throughout and when placed under pressure in the straight CALEMORE initially responded to this riding but then weakened from the 300m. S. Katsidis added that in his opinion the filly was not entirely disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of CALEMORE failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Trainer K. Martin was advised that PEACHY BABY, which trailed the field throughout the event and finished a distant last, would be requried to compete in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again for what stewards deemed to be an unsatisfactory performance. A post-race veterinary examination of PEACHY BABY revealed that the filly had sustained a superficial laceration to the near fore pastern.
Race 3: PADUA COLLEGE H’CAP - 1640m
1st – Cinque Terre 2nd – Wattle Brave 3rd – Ivors Girl 4th – Rem’e’can
BOWEN BEAUTY (R. Wiggins) jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
A short distance after the start THRIPENCE (J. Taylor) was taken in by TIGER'S SINS (P. Hammersley) and made heavy contact with THEREABOUTS (K. Sawyers).
CINQUE TERRE (J. Wood) raced three wide in the early stages before crossing to a position outside the leader near the 1200m.
THE ENEMY WITHIN (L. Cassidy) raced three wide throughout without cover before weakening in the home straight.
IVORS GIRL (T. Treichel) was held up for clear running in the early part of the straight behind THE GODDESS (M. Wood), which was weakening.
Stewards questioned M. Wood as to the riding tactics on THE GODDESS today whereby the horse went forward to lead, which is in contrast to its most recent racing pattern. Apprentice M. Wood reported that connections had indicated that the horse resents being restrained and from the wide barrier to allow the horse to settle where comfortable. Trainer B. Baldwin stated that he did not anticipate the horse leading and confirmed his instructions that the horse resents being restrained. He added that whilst he was surprised that the horse assumed the lead, he was not surprised to see the horse racing in a more prominent position than it had been of recent times. The attention of trainer B. Baldwin was drawn to his obligation to notify stewards of any variation in riding tactics.
The track was upgraded to DEAD 4 following the running of this event.
Race 4: THE GB MEMORIAL H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Cool Edition 2nd – Kyros 3rd – Mirabeau 4th – Secret Request
BIGGA'N'BETTA (J. Taylor) and SIONG TEE (Matthew Palmer) were slow to begin.
Stewards permitted COOL EDITION to race in blinkers following a verbal assurance from trainer T. Crane that he had made the appropriate application for the mare to race in this gear. A public announcement was made to this effect. The matter was adjourned to allow Mr Crane to provide evidence to support his assurance that the gear change had been made.
Race 5: RACE-TECH AUSTRALIA H’CAP - 1030m
1st – Seek And Find 2nd – Holding The Fort 3rd – Sweet Magic 4th – Azzurra Bay
As S. Galloway was unable to arrive on course in time, J. Bowditch was substituted as the rider of JIVE QUEEN.
DO OR DIE (W. Clasohm) shifted in at the start and hampered AZZURRA BAY (B. Stewart).
DOUBLE LINES (J. Wood) jumped awkwardly, shifted in and brushed HOLDING THE FORT (L. Cassidy), and then shifted out abruptly across the heels of ROSSEAU (D. Griffin).
SWEET MAGIC (J. Byrne) raced very greenly in the early stages.
Near the 800m SEEK AND FIND (M. Hellyer) commenced to overrace and when being restrained off the heels of FOREST REDGUM (S. Katsidis) shifted out taking SWEET MAGIC wider on the track.
ROSSEAU overraced in the early stages and after passing the 800m shifted in resulting in HOLDING THE FORT being momentarily inconvenienced.
SWEET MAGIC, STAR VALERIE (M. Heagney) and HALLSIDE MAGIC (K. Wharton) raced wide throughout.
Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight AZZURRA BAY was held up on the heels of BAROQUE PEARL (C. Munce), which was tiring.
C. Munce, the rider of BAROQUE PEARL, which performed below expectations, explained that the filly travelled well in the lead until rounding the home turn where once he applied pressure BAROQUE PEARL failed to respond to his riding and weakened from that point. Trainer T. Gollan explained that BAROQUE PEARL had worked well leading into today’s race and he was unable to explain the filly’s disappointing performance. Mr Gollan undertook to report in the coming days anything that may have contributed to today’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of BAROQUE PEARL revealed the filly to have a poor post-race recovery rate and a routine swab sample was taken.
Race 6: HIDDEN DRAGON H’CAP - 1640m
1st – Favours Traded 2nd – Mr Boogiewoogie 3rd – Dusty’s Felt 4th – World By Night
SCHILLINSWORTH (S. Katsidis) began awkwardly, which resulted in S. Katsidis becoming unbalanced in the saddle.
AMERICAN GANGSTER (J. Taylor) raced three wide in the early stages before assuming the lead approaching the 1000m.
J. Bowditch, the rider of CHARLOTTE COURTNEY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a), the careless riding being that after passing the 900m he permitted his mount to shift in when not fully clear of ASHMA’S GOLD (J. Byrne), resulting in that horse being tightened for room and having to be checked and ROCK RAVE (S. Bogenhuber), which was following, also having to be checked as a consequence. J. Bowditch’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 3 April, and expire at midnight on 14 April 2010.
Race 7: RACETREE H’CAP – 1030m
1st – Hull City 2nd – Grandiva 3rd – Any Wonder 4th – Just Hilda
TAFEER, which became fractious in its raceday stall, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon who reported that the filly was lame and was subsequently declared a late scratching at 3.58 p.m. by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on TAFEER be refunded with deductions of 13 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 12 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets to apply.
BIDS (B. Looker) was slow to begin.
Near the 900m GRANDIVA hd to be eased when tightened for room between WEDDING LILY and LADY SELENE (M. Cahill), which shifted in slightly when not fully clear. M. Cahill was reminded of his obligations to ensure he is clear when shifting ground in future.
ADVENTUROUS ANGEL (J. Taylor) and PHAR TOO FAST (C. Munce) raced wide throughout.
Passing the 800m ANY WONDER (R. Hinricks) got its head up when overracing.
Approaching the 300m GRANDIVA shifted out to improve around the heels of ANY WONDER, taking WEDDING LILY, ADVENTUROUS ANGEL and PHAR TOO FAST wider on the track. J. Byrne was issued with a reprimand under AR. 137(a) and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
Stewards sought an explanation from M. Cahill regarding the performance of LADY SELENE. M. Cahill explained that he allowed the filly to settle where she was comfortable in the early stages and when three wide was able to obtain cover. He added that he was momentarily inconvenienced near the 300m and following this LADY SELENE worked to the line well when placed under pressure. M. Cahill added that LADY SELENE would appreciate a step-up in distance in future starts. A post-race veterinary examination of LADY SELENE failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 8: GLENLOGAN PARK H’CAP - 1030m
1st – Ulladulla 2nd – Fleet ‘N’ Fast 3rd – Destiny Partners 4th – Dubbus
HESANOTHADOLLAR (J. Wood) jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
When being restrained near the 800m LINES (C. Munce) shifted in across the heels of MR MONTGOMERY (S. Drake) and lost ground.
ROCK MY ROOF (J. Taylor) raced very wide throughout.
Apprentice B. Looker, the rider of CENTENNIAL SON, which performed below expectations, explained that the gelding travelled well in the lead in the early and middle stages despite being pressure by ZEBAKWE, which was overracing to its outside. B. Looker added that when placed under pressure upon straightening the horse did not respond to his riding as anticipated. A post-race veterinary examination of CENTENNIAL SON revealed no obvious abnormalities.
Near the 300m LINES was inconvenienced by MR MONTGOMERY which shifted out.
L. Cassidy, the rider of ZEBAKWE, which performed below market expectations, explained that it was his intention to ride the gelding with cover, however ZEBAKWE overraced in the early stages when caught outside the leader and the horse continued to overrace. He added that when placed under pressure the horse did not respond to his riding and the fact that the horse overraced may have had an adverse effect on the its finishing performance in the straight.
