Near the 800m, MISTER CELESTIAL (M. Hellyer) shifted in, taking CARRY THE CLUBS in on to FALCO STAR (M. Cahill), which had to be steadied momentarily.

CARRY THE CLUBS was held up in the early part of the straight.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey M. Bennett regarding the disappointing performance of BACKSTABBER. M. Bennett stated that the horse was slow to begin and travelled only fairly to the first turn, which resulted in him settling in a more rearward position then he would have liked. M. Bennett further added that BACKSTABBER commenced to hang out leaving the 800m, and after accelerating briefly in the home straight, compounded and proved disappointing. Trainer B. Dodson explained that it was uncharacteristic for BACKSTABBER to miss the start and that when M. Bennett was forced to ride the horse from a rearward position he was of the opinion that this did not suit the usual racing pattern of the horse. B Dodson further added that whilst the performance was disappointing, he felt that it was as a result of the pattern in which BACKSTABBER had to be ridden after being slowly away. A post-race veterinary examination of BACKSTABBER failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

It was reported by stewards in the vicinity that they heard calling from B. El-Issa for room along the fence when placed behind NAADJI approaching that point. C. Munce stated that he did not hear any calling from B. El-Issa, adding that his mount was under pressure at that point of the race and when AIGLON shifted back to the fence forward of him, he decided to shift outwards in an attempt to improve, which enabled ROYAL REIGN to improve to his inside. When questioned as to why he did not attempt to hold his line outside ZUZELA rounding the home turn, C. Munce stated that due to his mount racing under pressure, it shifted out despite his efforts, thus enabling ROYAL REIGN to obtain a run to his inside at that point. B. El-Issa stated he had called at that point of the race simply to advise C. Munce of his position close up and to the inside of NAADJI, which was racing in an unorthodox position slightly away from the fence. In the circumstances, stewards noted the explanations of both riders and took no further action.
