From Doomben 29.1.11 - Race 8: BLACKWOODS 0MW H'CAP - 1350m: B. Stewart, the rider of TWO TONE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of BLACK DAKOTA (J. Bowditch), resulting in that runner being severely crowded and having to be checked. B. Stewart’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, to commence at the expiration of his current term of suspension and expire at midnight on Wednesday, 16 February 2011.

Race 1: SKY RACING QTIS 2YO H’CAP – 1010m
1st – Spinhro 2nd – Slysera 3rd – Punch On 4th – Vancouver Gold

Trainer L. Gough was reprimanded under LR. 42 for failing to lodge a complete stable return for NO MORE BULL.

Trainer M. Nolan was issued with a reprimand under AR. 140B for failing to notify that MACCA'S EXPRESS would be racing in a tongue tie for the first time today by the prescribed time.

Trainer B. Guy advised stewards that RED ROYAL would be ridden in a forward position if possible.

PUNCH ON (M. Cahill) jumped awkwardly and shifted out bumping NO MORE BULL (S. Scriven)

MACCA'S EXPRESS (G. Colless) also jumped away awkwardly.

Approaching the 700m VANCOUVER GOLD (J. Wood) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of PUNCH ON, which shifted in when not fully clear. M. Cahill, the rider of PUNCH ON, was advised to afford more clearance to his fellow riders in future.

Near the 700m PRECIOUS SHADOW (M. Hellyer) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of FLYING INDY (B. El-Issa) when not fully clear. B. El-Issa was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

RED ROYAL (C. Munce) raced wide for a major part of the event.

SLYSERA (J. Byrne) raced three wide to a point near the 600m where it crossed to the position outside the leader PUNCH ON.

VANCOUVER GOLD hung out rounding the home turn and as a result shifted wider on the track.

FLYING INDY hung out when placed under pressure over the final 400m.

Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce regarding the performance of RED ROYAL. C. Munce explained that he did not have sufficient speed in the early stages to take up a forward position and was forced to race wide, however the colt failed to finish the race off in the home straight as he expected and in his view was slightly disappointing. C. Munce added that RED ROYAL will be better suited in races of a further distance than today’s. Trainer B. Guy agreed with the assessment of jockey Munce in that RED ROYAL will be better suited in races of 1200m and further and it was his intention now to send the colt for a spell.

A post-race veterinary examination of DAT PUFF (K. Pope) revealed the horse had shifted a near fore plate in running.

Race 2: SKY RACING CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1615m
1st – Demanding Miss 2nd – Win A Million 3rd – Racing Heart 4th – Sinful Warrior

Apprentice J. Wood was fined $100 under AR. 92(12) for failing to claim his full allowance on MALLORY PARK.

The start of this race was delayed when MALLORY PARK (J. Wood) had to be resaddled upon arrival at the barriers. There was a further delay when SINFUL WARRIOR (M. Cahill) was examined by the veterinary surgeon and subsequently cleared to race.

JERRYLEE (R. Wiggins) and TUSCANY VIEW (B. El-Issa) were slow to begin.

Approaching the 1500m TUSCANY VIEW, when being shifted closer to the fence, became awkward on the heels of JERRYLEE and had to be steadied.

Near the 1400m TUSCANY VIEW had to be momentarily steadied when tightened for room to the inside of HOLLYWOOD AND VINE (D. Browne), which shifted in slightly.

Rounding the first turn near the 1400m NEWSNIGHT (J. Bowditch) commenced to race fiercely and had to be restrained to avoid the heels of CATALLION (S. Galloway) for some distance. NEWSNIGHT continued to overrace during the middle stages.

Leaving the 1400m MUSASHI OF MIEKO (Matthew Palmer) had to be steadied from the heels of WIN A MILLION (A. Butler), which shifted in. Apprentice A. Butler was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

MOTOWN LADY (P. Hammersley), MUSASHI OF MIEKO (Matthew Palmer) and JERRYLEE all raced wide throughout.

Near the 900m NEWSNIGHT again had to be restrained to avoid the heels of CATALLION. HOLLYWOOD AND VINE (D. Browne), which was following, also had to be checked to avoid the heels of NEWSNIGHT.

After passing the 400m DEMANDING MISS (M. Wood) shifted wider on the track around the heels of MOTOWN LADY in order to improve.

Rounding the home turn CATALLION was held up when awkwardly placed on the heels of SINFUL WARRIOR. CATALLION again had difficulty obtaining clear running inside the final 100m when attempting a narrow run between WILL IMPRESS (J. Taylor) and THREE SWALLOWS (R. Hinricks).

After passing the 200m NEWSNIGHT altered course to the outside of the heels of MOTOWN LADY in order to improve, resulting in MUSASHI OF MIEKO having to be momentarily steadied when weakening.

Race 3: WOOLWORTHS CLASS 6 PLATE - 1350m
1st – Absent Friends 2nd – Rokatoko 3rd – God’s Hand 4th – Gundy Son

The start of this race was delayed when the tongue tie had to be refitted to FRIDAY NIGHTS (B. El-Issa) behind the barriers. At a subsequent inquiry, B. El-Issa was found guilty of a charge under AR. 175(gg) of making a false statement to the starter Mr M. Henderson that trainer T. Gayler had indicated that he was satisfied for the horse to race without a tongue tie when it had been dislodged during the preliminary, and was fined $300.

ABSENT FRIENDS (J. Byrne) was slow to begin.

Approaching the 1000m FLEET 'N' FAST (R. Hinricks), MYSTICAL GREY (E. Wilkinson) and VERRIDON (S. Seamer) were all forced to race in restricted room for a short distance to the insode of FRIDAY NIGHTS, which shifted in. VERRIDON then commenced to overrace and had to be steadied fro the heels of FRIDAY NIGHTS passing the 1000m.

Near the 200m ABSENT FRIENDS, when attempting to secure clear running to the outside of FLEET 'N' FAST (R. Hinricks), came in contact with MYSTICAL GREY (E. Wilkinson), which had to be steadied when forced out towards the heels of GUNDY SON (D. Browne).

D. Browne reported that when he steadied GUNDY SON across the heels of TEARY EYED (J. Wood) in the early stages to take a position closer to the fence, his saddle shifted forward over the horse’s wither, which placed him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event and as a result near the 800m he was obliged to shift out around the heels of GOD’S HAND (M. Cahill) and allow the horse to stride forward from that point on. As a consequence of GUNDY SON’s outward movement, TEARY EYED was forced wider on the track.

Race 4: MATTY GEORGE TURNS 21 2MW H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Our Mr Cashman 2nd – Perugin Thought 3rd – Easy Rocker 4th – Al Mazaya

DIGGING DEEP (M. Hellyer) threw its head in the air at the start and lost ground.

SLEEK REPEAT (Michael Palmer) and BEFORE THE STORM (S. Bogenhuber) raced wide throughout.

Upon entering the straight DIGGING DEEP hung out and became awkward at the heels of BEFORE THE STORM. JUST A TOUCH (B. El-Issa), which was following, had to shift to the outside of the heels of DIGGING DEEP in order to improve.

Passing the 300m PERUGIN THOUGHT (C. Munce) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so hampered SLEEK REPEAT. C. Munce was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

DIGGING DEEP was again steadied passing the 200m between SLEEK REPEAT and DANE FONTAINE (R. Wiggins), which was taken out slightly by TRISKELE (S. Galloway).

Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to GOOD 2, retrospective to this race.

Race 5: BLACKWOODS CLASS 6 PLATE - 2100m
1st – Fantastic Blue 2nd – Lake George 3rd – Cape Silver 4th – Attallus

Upon arrival at the barriers GRIEG (M. Hellyer) had to have an off hind plate attended to by the Club’s farrier.

HOOKER ROAD (K. Pope) jumped away awkwardly and was hampered shortly after the start between CAPE SILVER (C. Munce), which shifted in, and LAKE GEORGE (J. Byrne), which shifted out slightly.

After travelling a short distance PAPER WEIGHT (J. Wood) shifted out and bumped GRIEG out on to the hind quarters of ATTALLUS (B. El-Issa).

B. El-Issa, the rider of ATTALLUS, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the winning post on the first occasion he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of GRIEG, resulting in GRIEG having to be checked when tightened on to the running rail. B. El-Issa’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 11 meetings, to commence at the expiration of his current term of suspension expiring at midnight on Friday, 11 February, and expire at midnight on Friday, 25 February 2011.

Near the 1300m when DUEL SHOW (J. Taylor) commenced to lose some ground, LAKE GEORGE shifted three wide from a trailing position and was ridden forward to the position outside of the leader near the 1000m.

ATTALLUS shifted in under pressure inside the final 200m and near the 100m came into contact with CAPE SILVER on several occasions.

Stewards sought an explanation for the seemingly disappointing performance of BRAVE THE WAY. G. Colless stated that the horse travelled well, however when he attempted a forward move from the 600m BRAVE THE WAY was immediately under pressure and disappointed in the run to the finish. G. Colless added that he felt BRAVE THE WAY may not run out a strong 2100m. Trainer A. Bailey advised that the gelding would now be sent for a spell.

A post-race veterinary examination of DUEL SHOW, which tired from the 800m, revealed the horse to be showing signs of having jarred up on the firm surface.

Race 6: GLENLOGAN PARK 0MW H’CAP - 1010m
1st – Haizum 2nd – Ulmarra 3rd – Alesprit 4th – Carry To Fortune

OTTO'S DELIGHT (A. Taylor) was slow to begin.

ALESPRIT (S. Seamer) was tightened for room shortly after the start between HAIZUM (G. Colless), which shifted out slightly, and MARTHA'S VINEYARD (B. El-Issa), which shifted in. HAIZUM then shifted in and bumped SNORKEL (J. Taylor).

CLASSY CRYSTAL (Matthew Palmer), PEGUNNY ROY (C. Munce), CARRY TO FORTUNE (E. Wilkinson), HAIZUM and ALESPRIT raced wide throughout.

Approaching the 400m SNORKEL laid out across the heels of HAIZUM and had to be steadied.

TENNESSEE BLUE (B. Evans) was held up for clear running until a point passing the 250m.

Approaching the 150m OTTO'S DELIGHT had to be steadied from the heels of the tiring KAMBOJA (D. Missen) and inside the final 100 was held up for clear running on the heels of the tiring TENNESSEE BLUE.

A post-race veterinary examination of ULMARRA (N. Yamada) revealed the gelding to have broken down in the near fore fetlock.

A post-race veterinary examination of KAMBOJA revealed the gelding to be exhibiting slow post-race recovery.

TENNESSEE BLUE lost its near hind plate in running.

Race 7: CARLTON MID OPEN H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Pyramids 2nd – Heart Of The Citi 3rd – Steel Lips 4th – Red Sphere

As M. Cahill was to be overweight, S. Seamer was substituted as the rider of SIR KINGSFORD. M. Cahill was fined $100 under AR. 120(b).

Connections advised stewards that from the good alley, TOUR GUIDE (B. El-Issa) would be ridden more forward today.

Connections advised stewards that STEEL LIPS (J. Wood) would be ridden more prominently as they believed there was a lack of pace in the race.

MR HORNBLOWER (M. Speers) was slow to begin.

FIFTEEN CARAT (C. Munce) and LYNCEAN ACADEMY (R. Wiggins) raced wide throughout.

Near the 200m SIR KINGSFORD (S. Seamer) had to alter course to the inside of the heels of the tiring TOUR GUIDE in order to improve.

TABULATE (M. Hellyer) shifted out under pressure over the final 200m.

D. Bougoure, the trainer of TOUR GUIDE, which finished towards the tail of the field, advised that the horse would be retired from racing.

Stewards sought an explanation from G. Ryan’s stable representative, Mr M. Dunn, regarding the seemingly improved performance of PYRAMIDS. Mr Dunn stated that at its most recent start the horse was outpaced in the early stages and settled further back than anticipated. Mr Dunn added that the horse made steady ground in the straight on this occasion which was its first start after a short break. Mr Dunn added that today, due to the lack of speed, PYRAMIDS was able to race in a handy position and obviously took benefit from its first up performance.

MR HORNBLOWER lost its near fore plate in running.

Race 8: CHANNEL 7 QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1110m
1st – Skating On Ice 2nd – Steel Zip 3rd – Gran Torino 4th – Nuptse

B. El-Issa, the rider of GRAN TORINO, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of NUPTSE (C. Munce), resulting in NUPTSE being taken in on to the rightful running of BERNERS LEE (J. Wood), resulting in that horse having to be checked and losing its position. B. El-Issa’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 10 meetings, to be served concurrently with the suspension incurred in Race 5, expiring on Friday, 25 February 2011.

J. Bowditch, the rider of SKATING ON ICE, was was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 800m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of MINGTON (G. Colless), resulting in that horse having to be checked and losing its rightful running when tightened between SECRET PLEASURE (J. Byrne) and SKATING ON ICE. J. Bowditch licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 9 February, and expire following the Ipswich day meeting on Friday, 18 February 2011.

Approaching the 800m BERNERS LEE commenced to overrace and had to be steadied off the heels of SECRET PLEASURE and as a result of MINGTON being checked BERNERS LEE and FUSETTE, which were following, also had to be checked as a consequence.

STEEL ZIP (M. Radecker) and raced wide throughout.

MINGTON raced three wide until a point after passing the 600m.

Near the 700m SECRET PLEASURE, which was reluctant to hold its position to the inside of SKATING ON ICE, had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room by SKATING ON ICE. J. Bowditch, the rider of SKATING ON ICE, was advised to exercise more care.

STEEL ZIP shifted out under pressure in the straight, dictating the line of SKATING ON ICE on several occasions. M. Radecker was advised that she must stop riding and straighten sooner than she had on this occasion.

Stewards sought an explanation for apprentice M. Hellyer’s riding of FUSETTE rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. M. Hellyer stated that approaching the home turn he was held up on the heels of the tiring SECRET PLEASURE and was unable to improve. M. Hellyer added that whilst he would have liked to have got to the outside, DOMINI (R. Wiggins) was tiring in a three-wide position to his outside and he had to concede ground rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight in order to clear himself from that horse’s heels before obtaining clear running to the outside of that runner. Apprentice Hellyer added that the horse, once clear, finished the race off very well.

G. Colless, the rider of MINGTON, which performed below expectations, explained that the colt did not sprint as expected when placed under pressure rounding the home turn and it was his opinion that MINGTON will be better suited in races of a further distance where it can race in a forward position.

Stewards sought an explanation from J. Taylor regarding the disappointing performance of LADY MONTEL. J. Taylor explained that the filly travelled only fairly and did not finish the race off when placed under pressure and in his opinion has come to the end of its current racing preparation. Trainer D. Bell stated that in the lead up to today’s event he had been pleased with the horse’s work and was very disappointed with today’s performance. He confirmed that LADY MONTEL would now be sent for a spell. LADY MONTEL (J. Taylor) lost its near fore plate in running.
