Race 1: Act For Kids – 2mw Last Year H'cap - 1200m
1st – Vareena Miss 2nd – Tierqualo 3rd – Sway To Go 4th - Steel Lips

Upon arrival at the barriers, SNIP ESPRIT was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

SNIP ESPRIT (S. Seamer) and PROST (D. Dunn) were slow to begin.

GHETTO BLASTER (D. Browne) raced ungenerously when being restrained in the early stages.

Leaving the 800m, SAM’S TOWN (C. Munce), which was racing fiercely, had to be eased from the heels of of STEEL LIPS (S. Scriven), which shifted in slightly. S. Scriven, rider of STEEL LIPS, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

At the same stage, PROST (D. Dunn) commenced to race fiercely and shifted out and had to be restrained from the heels of STEEL LIPS.

SCHIPPER (S. Galloway) overraced through the middle stages and near the 600m had to be steadied when forced to race in restricted room between CYCLONE AL (P. Hammersley) and SAVE A BUCK (J. Taylor), which shifted in.

SNIP ESPRIT had a tendency to lay out when racing wide through the middle stages.

Approaching the 200m, SOLZHENITSYN (L. Cassidy) shifted in and brushed DALZAR (T. Bell).

Nearing the 100m, FROZONE (G. Colless) improved up on to the heels of the tiring HONEST TRUTH (J. Holder) and had to be steadied and alter course.

SAVE A BUCK and GHETTO BLASTER raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy regarding the tactics employed on SOLZHENITSYN. L. Cassidy explained that he had been instructed to ride the horse midfield if possible but from his wide barrier he was obliged to restrain the gelding to a position closer to the rear of the field when it was evident to him he would be trapped wide in the early stages if he attempted to comply with his instructions. He added that the horse travelled well throughout the race and found the line strongly when he was able to secure clear running towards the inside in the home straight. L. Cassidy further added that SOLZHENITSYN will be better suited over distances further that the 1200m of today’s race.

A post-race veterinary examination of SCHIPPER, which compounded over the final stages, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 2: Carlton Mid Lord Mayor’s Cup – 1615m
1st – Firebolt 2nd – St Germaine 3rd – Tagus 4th – Snow Alert

Trainer R. James was fined $200 for the presentation of FIREBOLT to the enclosure with incorrect gear.

OUR LUKAS (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey L. Cassidy in respect to the disappointing performance of OUR LUKAS. L. Cassidy stated that the horse was reluctant to jump with the field and as a result missed the start by a considerable margin. He added that he then rode the horse aggressively to take up a handy position, as is customary, and OUR LUKAS travelled well until a point passing the 900m where the geldng was immediately under pressure and failed to respond to his riding thereafter. A post-race veterinary examination of OUR LUKAS failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Trainer R. Heathcote was unable to offer any tangible explanation for the poor performance of OUR LUKAS. He added that OUR LUKAS had been working well and he was confident of the horse’s chances today. Mr Heathcote undertook to report to stewards any abnormality that comes to light which may have had a bearing on the performance of OUR LUKAS today.

Race 3: Bollinger Champagne Class insufficiently clear (Group 2) – 1200m
1st – Free Wheeling 2nd – Dr Ichi 3rd – Hot Snitzel 4th – Double Impact

FREEROCKER (M. Rodd) and MCNEICE (P. Hammersley) were slow to begin.

Near the 800m, ST DARCI (J. McDonald) was inclined to lay in and had to be restrained from the heels of DR ICHI (L. Cassidy).

Passing the 600m, FREEROCKER, when overracing, had to be steadied from the heels of MILITARY GRACE (D. Griffin) and as a result shifted out and made contact with FREE WHEELING (H. Bowman).

Near the 200m, SHOW A PRINCE (G. Colless) was tightened for room between INTERNAL REVENUE (C. Munce) and ST DARCI, which shifted in and away from FREE WHEELING, which in turn shifted in under pressure. From this point FREE WHEELING raced greenly for the remainder of the event.

HOT SNITZEL, DOUBLE IMPACT (S. Scriven) and FREE WHEELING all raced 3 wide throughout.

MCNEICE (P. Hammersley) raced 4 wide throughout.

Jockey C. Brown reported that approaching the 800m he attempted to shift inwards on HOT SNITZEL to race in a one-out-and-one-back position, however the horse was very field shy and despite his efforts hung out away from ST DARCI. He added that HOT SNITZEL continued to race greenly and shift away from runners to his inside throughout the middle stages.

Race 4: Hidden Dragon The Roses Group 3 – 2020m
1st – Scarlett Lady 2nd – Savannah’s Choice 3rd – Divorces 4th -Becerra

HEIDILICIOUS (J. Winks) reared at the start and lost considerable ground. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on HEIDILICIOUS regarding its barrier manners.

BIANCA JEWEL (R. Wiggins) jumped away awkwardly.

Approaching the 1500m, DIVORCES (H. Bowman) was momentarily steadied from the heels of TIGRESS LILY (M. Rodd) when that runner shifted in.

DEMANDING MISS (J. Byrne) and BIANCA JEWEL overraced in the middle stages.

SCARLETT LADY (J. McDonald) shifted out to improve passing the 500m and in doing so bumped BIANCA JEWEL.

HEIDILICIOUS was held up in the early part of the straight and until the 200m.

SURPASSING (B. Stewart), IN A TANGLE (J. Cassidy) and DON’S SURPRISE (L. Nolan) raced wide throughout.

Race 5: Glenlogan Park Stakes (Group 3) – 1350m
1st – Kanzan 2nd – Zero Rock 3rd - Returntosender 4th – Ladys Angel

ALBERTON PARK (P. Hammersley) was slow to begin.

When the pace steadied near the 900m, DUAL CHAMBER (S. Galloway) commenced to overraced and had to be checked off the heels of ACQUIRED (M. Rodd) and as a result DUAL CHAMBER shifted out and made heavy contact with SWEEPSTAKING (J. Holder), which was taken out and made contact with the hind quarters of MARQUARDT (D. Dunn).

At the same stage, CULMINATE (H. Bowman), when overracing, was checked off the heels of KRYPTELON (D. Griffin) and shifted out abruptly.

RETURNTOSENDER (L. Nolen) was held up for clear running in the straight until nearing the 100m.

Passing the 100m, ALBERTON PARK was disappointed for clear running between KRYPTELON and ZERO ROCK (C. Munce) when KRYPTELON shifted in slightly and RETURNTOSENDER improved to the inside.

ZERO ROCK, KRYPTELON, CULMINATE, SWEEPSTAKING and MARQUARDT raced wide throughout.

L. Cassidy reported he was unable to fully test JASMINKA over the concluding stages due to being held up for clear running behind ALBERTA (G. Colless).

Stewards afforded jockey C. Munce the opportunity of explaining the reasons he did not continue to pressure ZERO ROCK down the back straight in an attempt to obtain the lead. C. Munce stated that the mare seems to have lost some of her customary early speed, and whilst he rode his mount with a view to taking up the lead in the early stages, he was unable to match the speed of ALVERTA and RETURNTOSENDER inside him. He added that whilst the pace slackened through the middle stages of the race, he was of the view he had expended too much energy in the early stages to warrant pressing forward to the front approaching the first turn, bearing in mind he jumped from an extremely wide barrier. Stewards accepted the explanation offered by jockey Munce.

Race 6: Darley BRC Sprint (Group 3) – 1350m
1st – Woorim 2nd – Listen Son 3rd – Thankgodyou’rehere 4th – Meet George

JAZZ HEART (J. Byrne) was slow to begin.

EL CHICO (C. Munce) was held up for clear running in the home straight until after passing the 100m.

Jockey D. Brown, rider fo WOORIM, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that leaving the 200m he permitted his mount to shift out, which resulted in MR ARMSTRONG (M. Hellyer) being taken out on to EIRE OF MAGIC (Matthew Palmer), which in turn shifted out onto the running of KENNY’S WORLD (C. Brown), which was taken outwards, resulting in M. Rodd, rider of LUCKY LUNA, having to take evasive action to avoid the heels of KENNY’S WORLD. As a consequence, this caused tightening to EIRE OF MAGIC, MR ARMSTRONG and KENNY’S WORLD. Jockey Brown was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence midnight, 3 June, the expiration of a previously incurred suspension, and to expire at midnight, 13 June.

SAINTHOOD (J. Cassidy) raced 3 wide throughout.

Race 7: Kirks Doomben Cup (Group 1) – 2020m
1st – Scenic Shot 2nd – My Kingdom Of Fife 3rd – Glass Harmonium 4th - Shootoff

GLASS HARMONIUM (H. Bowman) jumped inwards at the start, making heavy contact with SHOOT OUT (C. Brown), which in turn shifted in and bumped SCENIC SHOT (S. Scriven).

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey H. Bowman, rider of GLASS HARMONIUM, regarding his decision to leave a trailing position behind MY KINGDOM OF FIFE (D. Dunn) near the 1600m to eventually take up the lead approaching the 1400m. Jockey Bowman stated that a short distance after the start, MY KINGDOM OF FIFE crossed his running and whilst GLASS HARMONIUM was overracing he was satisfied to take a trailing position behind that runner, however at the same stage SHOOTOUT improved on to the heels of GLASS HARMONIUM, which resulted in GLASS HARMONIUM racing more fiercely. Jockey Bowman stated that by the time the field commenced to turn out of the straight, the pace had already slackened and as GLASS HORMONIUM had continued to overrace he elected to push forward 3 wide to obtain the lead. He further added that GLASS HARMONIUM opened up a lead on the remainder of the field through the middle stages and whilst he would have liked to have slowed his mount somewhat, he was conscious of not overly restraining the GLASS HORMONIUM as he felt it may have reignited the horse’s tendency to overrace. When asked as to why he raced away from the rail over the final 1200m, jockey Bowman stated he brought the horse away from the rail as a further measure to get his mount to settle, and whilst GLASS HARMONIUM did shift away from the fence a considerable distance on the home turn, he stated that he did not want to disrupt the horse’s momentum and chose to keep it balanced and maintain its rhythm at that point. After viewing the stewards patrol footage, and considering the evidence supplied by jockey Bowman, stewards accepted his explanation.

Race 8: Triple M Fred Best Classic (Group 3) - 1350m
1st – Falino 2nd – Spirit Of Boom 3rd – Skilled 4th – Skating On Ice

SPIRIT OF BOOM (H. Bowman) was slow to begin.

PIMPALA SECRET (G. Ryan) blundered shortly after the start.

CELTIC DANCER (P. Hammersley) raced 3 wide to a point near the 800m.

After passing the 1200m, HAVATRYST (S. Scriven) improved quickly to the inside of SPIRIT OF BOOM (H. Bowman) and was tightened for room on to the running rail for a short distance. Stewards were satisfied jockey H. Bowman, rider of SPIRIT OF BOOM, made every effort to afford HAVATRYST the room it was entitled to and took no direct action.

HAVATRYST was restrained in the early stages to gain a position closer to the rail.

SPIRIT OF BOOM overraced in the early stages.

Near the 800m, SPIRIT OF BOOM had to be eased when tightened for room by UNDER THE EIFFEL (L. Nolen), which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.

At the entrance to the straight, HAVATRYST attempted to shift out and bumped STEEL ZIP (M. Radecker).

UNDER THE EIFFEL was held up and unable to improve rounding the home turn.

Over the concluding stages, WABEEL (S. Galloway) was held up for clear running.

SKILLED was held up for clear running until a point passing the 100m.

BENNY’S BUTTON (C. Munce) and SKATING ON ICE (J. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.
