Stewards sought an explanation from J. Taylor, rider of THE BARRACKS, as to why he maintained an advantage over EXCELLANTES through the middle stages rather than crossing to the lead or restraining to a more orthadox position back and to the outside of EXCELLANTES. J. Taylor stated that THE BARRACKS was having its first run back from a lengthy spell and from the wide barrier he rode aggressively to take up a forward position, and that when he was unable to cross EXCELLANTES, he elected to maintain the position outside that horse. He added that THE BARRACKS raced quite fresh and he would have had to unnecessarly restrain his mount if he was to sit slightly back and to the outside of EXCELLANTES and believed this would have been detrimental to the horse’s overall chances. Stewards accepted the explanation.

G. Colless, rider of STEEL DRAGON, was questioned regarding the performance of that gelding. He stated that STEEL DRAGON travelled comfortably on the rails behind the leaders, however when placed under pressure in the early stages of the straight it failed to finish the race off as expected. G. Colless added that STEEL DRAGON was first up from a spell today and, in his opinion, would take a fitness benefit from today’s race. Trainer G. Heinrich was unable to offer any excuse for the performance, adding that she was confident of a forward showing today as STEEL DRAGON had worked very well leading into today’s race. Mrs Heinrich added that she would have veterinary tests carried out on STEEL DRAGON and undertook to advise stewards of the results of such tests. A post-race veterinary examination of STEEL DRAGON failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

VOLUNTARY (J. Holder) and KALBO (K. Fuji) raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explantion from E. Wilkinson regarding the performance of BRAMPTON, which performance below expectations. E. Wilkinson stated that the horse usually leads in its races, however was slow to begin today and as a result he was forced to ride BRAMPTON with cover. He added that despite this, the horse enjoyed a good run in transit but laid in the home straight and did not finish the race off as expected. Jockey Wilkinson attributed the horse’s tendency to lay in as a result of the horse being forced to race in amongst other runners today, and felt that the BRAMPTON races best when able to lead, as is its usual racing pattern.

When asked to explain the performance of ASPIRAN, apprentice T. Bell explained that the mare travelled comfortably in the lead, however aftert being tightened for room for some strides rounding the home turn, ASPIRAN was immediately under pressure and did not finish the race off from that point.

Stewards sought an explanation from O. Turpin regarding the riding tactics he employed on BIG TONY, which settled outside and in advance of the leader, ASPIRAN. O. Turpin stated that he would have liked to have settled BIG TONY in a forward position with cover if possible, however after travelling a short distance the gelding commenced to overrace and he was unable to restrain BIG TONY and for that reason he was forced to race to the outside of the leader. His explanation was accepted.

A post-race veterinary examination of FIVE O’CLOCK revealed the horse to be making an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer A. Bailey later reported that the horse was to have a throat operation, he was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for FIVE O’CLOCK, prior to its next race start.
