Stewards sought an explanation from S. Galloway regarding his riding of FAENZA in the home straight. S. Galloway stated that FAENZA settled further back in the field than he would have liked due to the mare blundering at the start, and after being momentarily held up rounding the home turn, he applied pressure to the mare in the early part of the home straight, however FAENZA failed to respond to his riding and for this reason he was of the opinion that there would be little benefit in applying further pressure over the final 200m. Stewards noted the comments, however reminded him of his obligations to ride his mounts in a manner which does not leave himself open to question.

Stewards questioned apprentice J. Fry, rider of THUNDER LANE, as to his reason for electing to shift wider on the track rounding the home turn rather than remain to the inside and attempt to improve. J. Fry explained that THUNDER LANE was under pressure from the 600m, at which point he shifted wider on the track to obtain clear running. However at a point leaving the 400m it became apparent he would more than likely obtain clear running back to the inside of CHOPPED, and for this reason he angled for that run and when placed under pressure over the final 250m, the gelding responded and found the line well. He further added that, in his opinion, THUNDER LANE will be better suited in races over longer distances than that of today’s race.
