As A. Spinks was injured, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
Race 1: INDUSTRIAL & PROTECTIVE COATINGS QLD QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Kelbenjar 2nd – Morning Captain 3rd – Pretty Pins 4th – Borehole
SHADOW PRINCESS (N. Thomas) was slow to begin.
After passing the 800m, when MORNING CAPTAIN (Matthew Palmer) elected to surrender the lead to KELBENJAR (E. Wilkinson), it commenced to overrace at the heels of KELBENJAR for some distance.
Near the 250m MORNING CAPTAIN shifted out around the heels of KELBENJAR to improve and in doing so brushed KAHUI (G. Colless).
G. Colless, rider of KAHUI, reported that the filly did not seem to appreciate today’s firm surface and from the 500m when under riding was not responding. Trainer P. Duff agreed with the assessment of G. Colless that KAHUI is not suited on firm tracks and intends to proceed with the filly’s current preparation. Mr Duff also undertook to notify stewards of anything that comes to light in subsequent days which may have had an effect on KAHUI’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of KAHUI revealed that the filly had sustained a small laceration to the near fore fetlock.
When asked to explain the performance of PRETTY PINS, rider J. Byrne stated that he had to ride the filly along from the 1000m in an attempt to maintain contact with the leading division and from the 500m he began to ride PRETTY PINS vigorously and whilst she did not sprint, the filly still found the line well and in his opinion will be far better suited in races over a further distance than today’s.
Race 2: MEARS & JEFFS CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1020m
1st – Seek And Find 2nd – Carry To Fortune 3rd – Amber Ale 4th – Just Been Lucky
ALESPRIT (S. Seamer), which slipped over in the mounting enclosure, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. A further examination of ALESPRIT at the barriers also cleared the mare to race.
HULL CITY (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.
AMBER'S CROWN (R. Wiggins) raced three wide without cover throughout.
Approaching and passing the 600m SEEK AND FIND (J. Taylor), which was overracing, had to be restrained to avoid the heels of CARRY TO FORTUNE (R. McMahon). As a result HULL CITY, which was trailing, was inconvenienced.
LIFEBUOY (M. Hellyer) had difficulty securing clear running in the home straight until near the 150m.
R. McMahon, the rider of CARRY TO FORTUNE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 200m he permitted his mount ot shift out when not clear of ALESPRIT, resulting in ALESPRIT being tightened for room between CARRY TO FORTUNE and SEEK AND FIND and having to be checked. R. McMahon’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 1 October, and expire at midnight on Friday, 14 October 2011.
Stewards sought an explanation from S. Seamer regarding the performance of ALESPRIT. S. Seamer stated that the mare was under pressure upon straightening and after passing the 300m was not responding to his riding. He added that in his opinion ALESPRIT, being first up since February, would take benefit from today’s race. A post-race veterinary examination of ALESPRIT revealed no abnormality.
R. Wiggins was provided with the opportunity of explaining the performance of AMBER'S CROWN. He stated that the filly was unusually stirred up prior to the race. He added that AMBER'S CROWN travelled comfortably, albeit in a three-wide position, and that after being brushed by HULL CITY passing the 600m, AMBER'S CROWN was immediately under pressure and was disappointing in failing to respond to his riding from that point. A post-race veterinary examination of AMBER'S CROWN revealed no abnormality.
Race 3: IPCQ INFRASTRUCTURE 1MW H’CAP - 1630m
1st – Anchor Bolt 2nd – Bootooloo 3rd – Hangover Henry 4th – Fleet Riane
Rounding the first turn CHART (P. Keane) was momentarily tightened for room by ANCHOR BOLT (G. Colless) and as a result shifted in and bumped MISS CUTIE (J. Byrne). SUNSHINE ANGEL (L. Cassidy), which was following, was also inconvenienced.
HANGOVER HENRY (A. Butler) raced three wide in the early stages until near the 1000m.
CHART raced three wide throughout and near the 900m shifted in and bumped SUNSHINE ANGEL.
Approaching the 400m COCO DUBAWI (M. Hellyer) was tightened for room by BOOTOOLOO (R. McMahon), which shifted in slightly.
A post-race veterinary examination of MISS CUTIE revealed the mare to be lame in the off foreleg. Stable representative Brett Killion was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness will be required prior to the mare’s next race start.
R. McMahon was questioned regarding the riding tactics he adopted on BOOTOOLOO, particularly whether he had considered improving forward from the 600m to the outside of CHART which was three wide. R. McMahon explained that rather than shift wide at that point he elected to trail SUNSHINE ANGEL and when it became evident passing the 500m that that runner was not improving into the race, he improved into a run between SUNSHINE ANGEL and MUSIC MAESTRO (J. Hoopert) which resulted in him saving valuable ground rounding the home turn. He added that had he elected to proceed to the outside of CHART he would have been forced extremely wide which in his view would have been detrimental to his chances. He further added that when he was able to get BOOTOOLOO to the outside of CRYSTAL HONOUR (P. Hammersley) passing the 300m, the gelding worked to the line strongly. His explanation was accepted.
Race 4: IPCQ CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OPEN H’CAP - 1630m
1st – Rockdale 2nd – Elusive Port 3rd – Chilled 4th – Racing Heart
DEACON (L. Cassidy) shifted in at the start and bumped RACING HEART (J. Byrne).
From the 1400m until after passing the 1000m THEY WON’T LAST (P. Hammersley) raced fiercely.
R. McMahon, the rider of TOPPING, was fined $100 under AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.
Race 5: IPCQ SINCE 1971 CLASS 6 PLATE - 2030m
1st – Eastline 2nd –Sam’s Town 3rd – Scarlett Jo 4th – Penny Louise
Correct weight was delayed to allow J. Byrne the opportunity of viewing the stewards’ patrol footage in the straight to determine whether he had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner. After viewing the film, J. Byrne elected not to proceed with an objection.
SCARLETT JO (J. Taylor) was slow to begin.
FAMOUS FORTUNE (C. Small) jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and had to be steadied from the heels of FLYING TOUCHDOWN (M. Hellyer).
Passing the winning post on the first occasion AMERICAN GANGSTER (N. Thomas) shifted in and away from PENNY LOUISE (R. McMahon) and as a result made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced.
FALONTINO (B. Wallace) attempted to jump the crossing at the 1600m.
SMUGGLER’S INN (P. Hammersley) raced three wide before being ridden forward to gain the position outside the leader near the 900m.
FLYING TOUCHDOWN raced three wide throughout.
Approaching the 600m FAMOUS FORTUNE and SCARLETT JO brushed on a number of occasions.
BITASILK (A. Butler) was held up approaching and rounding the home turn when awkwardly placed at the heels of AMERICAN GANGSTER when that runner commenced to weaken.
Rounding the home turn LOVES A CHALLENGE (E. Wilkinson) was held up and unable to improve.
Near the 150m EASTLINE (L. Cassidy) and SAM’S TOWN (J. Byrne) brushed.
LOVES A CHALLENGE was held up over the final 100m when unable to obtain clear running and as a result went to the line not fully tested by its rider.
Over the concluding stages CANSAVE (L. Rolls) was inconvenienced when tightened for room between FLYING TOUCHDOWN and PENNY LOUISE which shifted out under pressure.
PENNY LOUISE lost its off hind plate in running.
Race 6: THE PINK RIBBON RACE FOR RESEARCH F&M H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Risk Aversion 2nd – Win A Million 3rd – Flinders City 4th – Luminous Harmony
KORANOVSKY (L. Cassidy) hung in under pressure inside the final 100m.
J. Byrne reported that FUNTANTES did not feel comfortable in its action throughout the race. A post-race veterinary examination of FUNTANTES revealed the mare to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that he will require a veterinary certificate of fitness for FUNTANTES prior to its next start.
L. Cassidy was asked to explain his riding of KORANOVSKY approaching the 1000m where it appeared he had the opportunity to take up a closer trailing position behind WIN A MILLION (P. Hammersley) which would have resulted in RISK AVERSION (R. McMahon) being forced to race on his inside. L. Cassidy stated that he was mindful that KORANOVSKY is better suited when allowed to settle in the early stages and he was reluctant to ride forward at that point as he was of the view that would have resulted in KORANOVSKY racing too close to the speed and been detrimental to the mare’s chances. Stewards noted his explanation.
When asked to explain the performance of PARIS BLU, apprentice M. Hellyer stated that the mare travelled comfortably until he asked for an effort rounding the home turn and from that point was disappointing.
Race 7: DLA PARTNERS BENCHMARK 90 H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Fangles 2nd – Cat Eyes 3rd – What Happenedhenry 4th – Machination
OUR LUKAS (A. Butler) was slow to begin.
When the pace steadied near the 800m TISANI BOY (S. Seamer), when being steadied from the heels of SAVE A BUCK (J. Taylor), hung out and shifted wider on the track.
After passing the 200m WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY (L. Cassidy) had to alter course to the inside of CAT EYES (M. Hellyer) in order to improve.
An explanation was sought from trainer S. Jones regarding the improved performance of FANGLES today. S. Jones stated that the horse was having its third run back from a spell and its fitness has improved since its last start. He added that FANGLES is suited when able to lead in its races and control the tempo. Stewards noted his explanation.
Race 8: THE STARLIGHT STAMPEDE CLASS 6 PLATE - 1200m
1st – Purettan 2nd – Alberton Park 3rd – Trail Boss 4th – G’day Old Mate
REDESSI (J. Byrne) blundered shortly after the start.
G’DAY OLD MATE (B. Wallace) raced three wide without cover throughout.
ALBERTON PARK (A. Butler) was held up when unable to obtain clear running in the home straight until near the 150m.
Approaching and passing the winning post FASTER SON (P. Keane) had to be steadied when tightened for room between TRAIL BOSS (J. Bowditch), which shifted out under pressure, and SWAY TO GO (M. Hellyer), which shifted in whilst under the whip. Both J. Bowditch and apprentice M. Hellyer were issued with a reprimand and advised to take greater measures to stop riding and straighten their mounts in future.
Stewards sought an explanation from J. Taylor regarding the performance of WONDERFUL LASS. J. Taylor stated that the mare settled at the rear of the field which is its customary racing pattern, however due to the fast tempo set in the middle stages it was unable to maintain contact with the main body of the field and despite his urgings was reluctant to stretch out. He added that WONDERFUL LASS may not have been suited to today’s firm surface. A post-race veterinary examination of WONDERFUL LASS revealed no significant findings.
Stewards questioned apprentice P. Keane (FASTER SON) and apprentice M. Hellyer (SWAY TO GO) regarding the riding tactics they employed on their respective mounts when they shared the lead in the middle stages and set a fast tempo. M. Hellyer explained that SWAY TO GO is normally ridden in a forward position and resents being restrained, so for this reason he allowed the gelding to stride to the outside of FASTER SON after passing the 800m as he was of the view that apprentice Keane may have surrendered the leading position to him. Apprentice Keane explained that he was instructed to ride FASTER SON aggressively in the early stages and when challenged by SWAY TO GO approaching the 800m, FASTER SON commenced to overrace and he was unable to restrain the gelding to take a sit behind SWAY TO GO. Stewards noted the explanation of both apprentice riders.
