Race 1:WWW.BRC.COM.AU MAIDEN H’CAP - 2070m
1st – Touch Me Knott 2nd – Maisonblanc 3rd – Moon Boy 4th – Power Geda

ORBITING SPIRIT, which was kicked by another runner behind the barriers, underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start.

MUSHEER (J. Watkins) began awkwardly.

ORBITING SPIRIT (J. Hoopert) jumped outwards at the start, making heavy contact with INTEREST (B. Wallace) which also began awkwardly.

For some distance leaving the 1600m LA BELLE AURORE overraced at the heels of MUSHEER and had to be restrained by its rider.

Rounding the home turn MUSHEER was held up on the heels of POWER GEDA (J. Taylor).

Stewards sought an explanation from J. Byrne in respect to the seemingly disappointing performance of TOUGH TACTICS. J. Byrne explained that it was his intention to take up a handy position, however the horse did not have the necessary speed to do so. He added that he attempted to improve into the race from the 700m, at which time the horse was immediately under pressure and did not make ground and had a tendency to lay out. J. Byrne also indicated that he had suggested to connections that blinkers be added to the horse, which in his view may assist its competitive chances in the future. A post-race veterinary examination of TOUGH TACTICS revealed that it had been galloped on on the off foreleg.

Race 2: MELBOURNE CUP @ EAGLE FARM 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP - 1110m
1st – Bounding Along 2nd – Viking Heart 3rd – High On Believing 4th – Another Superior

Connections advised that from its wide barrier OUR HAND OF FAITH (G. Colless) would be ridden in a rearward position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.

A SNIP OF GOLD (J. Warrington), which refused to be loaded, was declared a late scratching at 2.04 p.m. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on A SNIP OF GOLD be refunded, with the following deductions to betting to apply:

0 cent in the dollar for the winner BOUNDING ALONG
4 cents in the dollar for place of winner BOUNDING ALONG
4 cents in the dollar for 2nd placeVIKING HEART
2 cents in the dollar for 3rd place HIGH ON BELIEVING

Trainer R. Milne was advised that A SNIP OF GOLD must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to its next start.

SALT AND PEPPEN (R. McMahon), which proved very difficult to load, jumped away awkwardly. Trainer P. Butterworth was advised that SALT AND PEPPEN must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to its next start.

BOUNDING ALONG (L. Cumberland) and HIGH ON BELIEVING (B. Wallace) made contact on jumping away.

Rounding the first turn ANOTHER SUPERIOR (T. Bell) got its head in the air when being restrained in an endeavour to take a position closer to the fence.

IN THE GENES (J. Byrne) and ANOTHER SUPERIOR raced wide throughout.

MR MATUSKA (E. Wilkinson) raced greenly in the early stages.

Leaving the 400m MR MATUSKA had to be steadied away from the heels of VIKING HEART (D. Missen), which shifted out to improve.

VIKING HEART had a tendency to lay out under pressure over the final 200m.

Apprentice B. Wallace reported that HIGH ON BELIEVING commenced to lay out rounding the first turn and continued to do so for the remainder of the event.

G. Colless was asked to explain the seemingly poor performance of OUR HAND OF FAITH. G. Colless stated that he was able to obtain a good position on the gelding and it travelled comfortably and passing the 500m commenced to work into the race well, however a short distance into the straight he was momentarily inconvenienced by a shift out from MR MATUSKA to his inside, at which time OUR HAND OF FAITH became unbalanced. G. Colless added that from that point the horse did not accelerate as expected. He further added that the horse had trialled well in preparation for today’s race and was disappointing.

ANOTHER SUPERIOR lost its near fore plate in running.

Race 3: ORMISTON COLLEGE CLASS 4 H’CAP - 1040m
1st – Nuptse 2nd – Fuato 3rd – Found The One 4th – Destiny Partners

Stewards acceded to a request from trainer T. Wolfgram to race COZ HE WANTS TO (B. Wallace) with the bubble cheeker removed from the horse’s gear.

FUATO (E. Wilkinson), which was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly and shifted out making contact with QUEENOFBEAUDESERT (N. Evans).

FASDEHERE (P. Hammersley) raced ungenerously from a point near the 800m until leaving the 600m.

FOUND THE ONE (T. Bell) and COZ HE WANTS TO raced wide throughout.

FUATO had a tendency to hang out over the final 600m.

DESTINY PARTNERS (G. Colless) had a tendency to lay out under pressure in the straight.

A post-race veterinary examination of FOUND THE ONE revealed the mare to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer J. Thompson was advised that FOUND THE ONE will require a veterinary clearance prior to its next start.

Stewards questioned apprentice B. Wallace and trainer T. Wolfgram regarding the tactics adopted on COZ HE WANTS TO, which raced four wide for the majority of the event, particularly apprentice Wallace’s failure to ease the horse and take a trail behind FOUND THE ONE leaving the 700m. Apprentice Wallace stated that the instructions were to allow COZ HE WANTS TO to race where it was comfortable and not to unduly restrain the horse. Ms Wolfgram confirmed the instructions and stated that in her opinin it would be detrimental to the horse’s chances if it were restrained in the early stages and then commence to urge the horse forward at a later time in view of the distance of today’s race of only 1000m. After considering the matter, stewards were of the view that the ride by apprentice Wallace lacked initiative and referred apprentice Wallace to Racing Queensland Ltd’s apprentice training officer for further tutelage.

Race 4: CHANNEL SEVEN MAIDEN H’CAP - 1040m
1st – My Good Friend 2nd – Octavius 3rd – Vasuki 4th – So Feline

ROUE (A. Butler) was slow to begin.

MY GOOD FRIEND (P. Schmidt) and ONCE BITTEN (T. Bell) made contact on jumping away.

MAZARINE (R. Wiggins), IRRESISTIBLE ME (M. Hellyer) and BEERALLROUND (B. Wallace) raced wide throughout.

Approaching the 800m MAZARINE shifted out and away from VASUKI (G. Colless), resulting in MISTY WARRIOR (J. Taylor) being awkwardly placed at the heels of MAZARINE for a short distance and having to be steadied.

Near the 350m SO FELINE (P. Hammersley), when improving, momentarily became awkward at the heels of IRRESISTIBLE ME.

G. Colless reported that VASUKI was field shy throughout the event and over the concluding stages laid out, placing him at a disadvantage in fully testing the horse.

MY GOOD FRIEND lost its near hind plate in running.

Race 5: SKY RACING F&M CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Rosagaze 2nd – Raise Up 3rd – Just Destiny 4th – Epona Princess

Connections advised that from its wide barrier EPONA PRINCESS (G. Colless) would be ridden in a rearward position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.

An objection was lodged by J. Byrne, the rider of 4th placegetter JUST DESTINY, against EPONA PRINCESS (G. Colless) being placed 3rd, alleging interference near the 150m. After taking evidence from the riders concerned and conections of both horses, stewards were of the view that at that point EPONA PRINCESS, when endeavouring to obtain clear running, shifted out making contact with JUST DESTINY, taking it off its rightful line of running. Bearing in mind the slight margin between the two horses at the finish, stewards were satisfied that the interference suffered by JUST DESTINY was to the extent to materially affect the outcome of the event and therefore upheld the objection and declared correct weight on the amended placings of 2, 1, 4 and 5.

MAID READY (S. Drake) and MISS ELMO (C. Munce) were both slow to begin.

LITTLE WHITE HORSE (P. Keane), PAMPERED LASS (E. Wilkinson) and WHYDIDYOULEAVEME (J. Letherby) all raced wide throughout.

Approaching the 200m EPONA PRINCESS (G. Colless) had to alter course after being disappointed for a run between LITTLE WHITE HORSE and ROSAGAZE (T. Bell).

Race 6: DRUMBEATS @ LYNDHURST C,G&E CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Dux Bellorum 2nd – Embraer 3rd – On Face Value 4th – Won A Heart

Trainer T. Thomas was fined $200 under AR. 114 for failing to scratch SARGASSO by the prescribed time.

NOBODY KNOWS (R. Goltz) and KISS ME DEADLY (J. Byrne) made contact on jumping away.

TONZATICKA (M. Hellyer) was tightened for room shortly after the start between ON FACE VALUE (C. Munce) and LEFT STANDING (D. Missen), both of which shifted ground.

EMBRAER (R. McMahon) began awkwardly.

Near the 1000m BIG KEN THE CELT (A. Butler) was crowded for room when racing between EXECUTIVE OFFICER (R. Wiggins) and EMBRAER which laid out.

Leaving the 900m TRICKIN (P. Schmidt) made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced after shifting in and away from BIG KEN THE CELT. Apprentice A. Butler, the rider of BIG KEN THE CELT, was advised to exercise more care.

TONZATICKA hung out rounding the home turn.

Near the 300m EMBRAER shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with LEFT STANDING.

Apprentice M. Hellyer reported that TONZATICKA commenced to hang out quite badly from the 600m and did so for the remainder of the event, finishing extremely wide on the course. Connections were advised that the horse must trial to the satisfaction of stewards before racing again.

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice P. Schmidt and trainer J. Dann in respect of the tactics employed on TRICKIN in the early stages in that after beginning well from the advantageous inside barrier apprentice Schmidt appeared to restrain the horse to a postion towards the rear of the field. Mr Dann stated that he had instructed apprentice Schmidt to position the horse midfield and stated that she may have ridden the horse a little to conservatively in the early stages after beginning well. Apprentice Schmidt stated that she attempted to comply with her instructions to position the horse midfield despite beginning very well and when she elected to take hold of the horse in the early stages it lost more ground than she anticipated. Stewards informed apprentice Schmidt that in their view she had ridden the horse too conservatively after beginning well and advised apprentice Schmidt that she must ensure that she positions her mounts in a competitive position at all times to take advantage of any opportunities that may arise.

A post-race veterinary examination of BIG KEN THE CELT revealed no abnormality.

Race 7: SKY RACING CLASS 5 H’CAP - 1350m
1st – From London 2nd – Brigadoon Jack 3rd – Newly Elected 4th – Go Forest Go

STAR OF OMBRA (R. Wiggins) was slow to begin.

GO FOREST GO (C. Munce) and SHADOWS 'N' STARS (G. Colless) overraced in the early stages.

BRIGADOON JACK (A. Butler) and NEWLY ELECTED (R. McMahon) both raced wide throughout.

R. Wiggins was unable to fully test STAR OF OMBRA over the final 100m when forced to race in restricted room between TETRA (K. Yoshida) and GO FOREST GO.

Stewards sought an explanation from trainer K. Schweida and jockey C. Munce regarding the performance of GO FOREST GO. C. Munce stated that he believed the moderate tempo of the race in the early and middle stages did not suit the horse’s racing pattern and in the circumstances he was reluctant to be critical of the horse’s performance today. He was of the view that the horse performs best when able to sprint off a good speed. Mr Schweida concurred with the comments of jockey Munce. A post-race veterinary examination of GO FOREST GO revealed no abnormality.
