Race 1: YS Clothing QTIS 2yo H'cap - 1110m
1st – Top Rada 2nd – Caldetes 3rd – Utilism 4th - Dansonate
UTILISM (S. Galloway) was slow to begin.
EDGE OF LOVE (P. Hammersley) was a little slow to begin.
Near the 700m, UTILISM commenced to overrace and had to be restrained to avoid the heels of TOP RADA (D. Browne).
COURTZ BOY (M. Hellyer), when racing greenly, made the home turn wider on the track.
CALDETES (G. Colless) raced greenly throughout the race and hung out passing the 800m, hampering LADY OF CAPRI (L. Cassidy) and HOLEY GADOLEY (M. Radecker), forcing those runners wider on the track. HOLEY GADOLEY raced 3 wide for the remainder of the race. Following this, CALDETES continued to hang out and approaching the 600m shifted out across the heels of LADY OF CAPRI. Trainer M. Dunn was advised that a warning would be placed on CALDETES regarding its racing manners.
After passing the 300m, LADY OF CAPRI was inconvenienced when it had a tendency to shift in away from HUSSEZA (J. Byrne).
MODERN WARFARE (B. Stewart) was held up and unable to improve from the 200m until approaching the 100m.
CALDETES shifted out abruptly under pressure over the concluding stages.
FIRST TO GO (C. Munce) raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
P. Hammersley was questioned regarding the disappointing performance of EDGE OF LOVE. Jockey Hammersley stated that the filly was slow into stride and could not muster any early speed. He added that from the 800m he rode EDGE OF LOVE along but was unable to make up any ground and, in his view, today’s performance was disappointing. He further stated that, in his opinion, EDGE OF LOVE may be coming to the end of its preparation. Stable representative Mr Hammersley was unable to offer any explanation for today’s performance. Stewards will interview trainer Mr B. Hill regarding this matter. A post-race veterinary examination of EDGE OF LOVE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer B. Hill later reported that the filly was sore behind the day following the race and would monitor her condition in the coming days before deciding on whether continuing her preparation.
Race 2: Bakerbooth Plumbing & Gas Fitting Pty Ltd 1MW H'cap - 1600m
1st – Il Cardinale 2nd – From London 3rd – Pretty Pins 4th – On Face Value
After travelling a short distance, HARNEY (S. Seamer) was hampered between VIPERA GOLD (M. Hellyer) and WHISPERING GAP (E. Wilkinson) when that runner shifted out slightly.
HASLINGTON (J. Taylor) raced 3 wide in the early stages until being ridden forward to obtain a position outside the leader passing the 1000m.
Near the 400m, VIPERA GOLD attempted to improve between HARNEY and FROM LONDON (R. McMahon) where there was insufficient room and had to be momentarily steadied.
After passing the 300m, PRETTY PINS (S. Galloway) was hampered when momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of FROM LONDON, which shifted out when not quite clear. R. McMahon, rider of FROM LONDON, was advised to ensure he is fully clear when shifting ground in future.
HARNEY raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
Race 3: Mount Alvernia College F&M NMW H'cap - 1200m
1st – Mossriver 2nd – Imeldamay 3rd – Rhapsodic 4th - Getyourown
STRIKING ROSE (J. Warrington) and LOVE THAT CHICK (R. Hancock) were both a little slow to begin.
MALLARD (S. Galloway) commenced to overrace and near the 900m improved on to the heels of GEBLITZT (R. McMahon) and had to be checked and shifted out making the turn awkwardly.
Near the 600m, CARRY THAT WEIGHT (C. Munce) shifted in momentarily and brushed GETYOUROWN (M. Hellyer), which had a tendency to lay out.
Passing the 200m, GEBLITZT hung in under pressure and had to be steadied to avoid the heels of MALLARD (S. Galloway).
CARRY THAT WEIGHT raced 3 wide without cover for the majority of the event.
MALLARD was also obliged to race wide throughout.
R. McMahon, rider of 5TH placegetter, GEBLITZ, pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137(b), in that he failed to ride his mount right out to the end of the race. R. McMahon was fined $500. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account that R. McMahon’s actions had cost his mount 4th placing.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CARRY THAT WEIGHT, C. Munce explained that due to a lack of pace in the race it was decided that the horse would be ridden forward today, however CARRY THAT WEIGHT hung out from the 800m and did not finish the race off. Trainer B. Brown confirmed that he had instructed jockey C. Munce to settle in a handy position with cover if possible, however once ridden forward, CARRY THAT WEIGHT commenced to overrace and, in his view, this affected the horse’s capacity to finish the race off. Mr Brown added that in future, where circumstances permit, he would endeavour to have CARRY THAT WEIGHT ridden in a midfield position with cover. A post-race veterinary examination of CARRY THAT WEIGHT failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
COCO BABY lost its near hind plate in running.
Race 4: ANZA Communications QTIS 3yo H'cap - 1350m
1st – Morning Captain 2nd – Dorchester 3rd – Margins 4th - Kelbenjar
LAST GIFT (G. Colless) stood flatfooted at the start and lost considerable ground. Connections were advised that LAST GIFT must perform satisfactorily in an official trial prior to being permitted to race again. Trainer J. Fogarty indicated that the gelding would now be sent for a spell.
MASSURI (M. Hellyer) overraced in the early stages of the event.
VIKING HEART (L. Cassidy) raced 3 wide in the early and middle stages of the race before being ridden forward to obtain the lead near the 600m.
Stewards sought an explanation from J. Byrne regarding the disappointing performance of ANOTHER SUPERIOR. J. Byrne stated that the filly was slow to begin and lost considerable ground and despite his urgings could not muster any early speed. He added that the horse did not feel comfortable in its action throughout the race and failed to respond to his riding in the home straight. Stable representative Mr Brett Killian was unable to explain the disappointing performance other than it was the first occasion ANOTHER SUPERIOR had backed up within a week of its last start. A post-race veterinary examination of ANOTHER SUPERIOR revealed lamness in the near foreleg and a slower than normal recovery rate. Mr Killian was advised that a warning would be placed on ANOTHER SUPERIOR for being slow to begin, and that he must supply a veterinary certificate of fitness for the horse prior to its next race start.
Race 5: Aitkenvale Family Health Centre Class 6 H'cap - 1350m
1st – Tafeer 2nd – Hidden Kisses 3rd – Brigadoon Jack 4th - Redessi
LITTLE FOOTSTEPS was declared a late scratching at 11.50 am on veterinary advice.
Connections advised that from the wide barrier if circumstances permit, REDESSI, which is racing in blinkers today, may settle further forward. After beginning only fairly, REDESSI could not muster early speed and settled towards the rear of the field.
TAFEER struck the fence behind the barriers and was examined by the veterinary surgeon and was cleared to race.
HIDDEN KISSES (J. Byrne) was slow to begin.
DUEL SHOW (S. Galloway) commenced to hang out approaching the 800m turn, which resulted in MARSH HARBOUR (C. Munce) being taken out across the heels of REDESSI (L. Cassidy) and having to be checked. Trainer P. Duff was advised that a warning would be placed on DUEL SHOW regarding its racing manners. Following this incident, DUEL SHOW continued to continued to overrace and hung out in the middle stages.
Shortly after entering the straight, MR LIGHT BLUE (B. Stewart) was inconvenienced when steadied from the heels of REDESSI (L. Cassidy), which shifted out away from BRIGADOON JACK (P. Hammersley) when that runner shifted out slightly.
BRIGADOON JACK (P. Hammersley) and REDESSI (L. Cassidy) raced 3 wide throughout.
MR LIGHT BLUE (B. Stewart) also raced wide for a major part of of the race.
Race 6: Doug Allen Memorial Class 6 Plate - 2000m
1st – Our Recidivist 2nd – Rundle 3rd – Kasafuego 4th – Clangor
Connections advised that it was the intention to lead on BANDIDAS as at its previous start it did not appreciate racing behind other runners. The horse was ridden accordingly.
OUR RECIDIVIST (C. Munce), which struck the enclosure rail prior to commencing its preliminary, was examined by the veterinary surgeon behind the barriers and cleared to race.
Near the 1900m, FLYING TOUCHDOWN (B. Looker) was taken out slightly by BANDIDAS (M. Hellyer) and made contact with RED GOD (P. Hammersley).
RUNDLE (G. Colless) was restrained in the early stages to gain a position closer to the rail.
J. Warrington, rider of CARN, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that passing the winning post on the first occasion he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of TIMETABLE (L. Cassidy), resulting in TIMETABLE having to be checked to avoid the heels of CARN. J. Warrington was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 1 November and to expire at midnight 11 November 2011.
FLYING TOUCHDOWN (B. Looker) raced 3 wide to a point passing the 1000m.
Near the 800m, BANDIDAS (M. Hellyer) shifted out and made contact with FLYING TOUCHDOWN.
TIMETABLE (L. Cassidy) was held up and unable to improve approaching and rounding the home turn and in the home straight and shifted in abruptly to improve.
Race 7: Padua College CG&E NMW H'cap - 1200m
1st –Theft 2nd – Slugsbrothernugget 3rd – Prime Cognac 4th - Huss
CAVALIERED and IBALANCE (B. Looker) were slow to begin.
Approaching the 800m, THEFT (C. Munce) shifted out around the heels of PRIME COGNAC (R. Wiggins), resulting in STONER (L. Rolls) being taken out on to PEGUNNY CAT (R. McMahon), which was hampered. IBALANCE (B. Looker), which was following, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of PEGUNNY CAT. Stewards will advise jockey C. Munce, rider of THEFT, that he must ensure greater care when shifting ground in future.
After passing the 800m, HUSS (C. Pye), when leading, steadied the pace and as a result PRIME COGNAC (R. Wiggins), which was trailing, had to be checked to avoid the heels of HUSS (C. Pye). Stewards acknowledged that prior to this, PRIME COGNAC did have a tendency to overrace, however did nevertheless issue C. Pye, rider of HUSS, with a reprimand for excessively reducing the pace at that stage.
Near the 700m, SLUGSBROTHERNUGGET (J. Taylor) had to be steadied from the heels of PRIME COGNAC. STREETSON (S. Seamer), which was following, also had to be steadied as a consequence.
IBALANCE raced 3 wide throughout.
PEGUNNY CAT (R. McMahon) raced 3 wide for a major part of the race.
LONARO (L. Cumberland) accidentally dropped his whip near the 100m.
Over the concluding stages, COUNTY SHERRIF shifted in and brushed STREETSON (S. Seamer).
After passing the finish line, COUNTY SHERRIF shifted out, taking LONARO out on to IBALANCE (B. Looker), which had to be steadied.
When asked to explain the performance of CAVALIERED, J. Byrne stated that the horse was having its first start back from a lengthy spell and after being slow to begin settled towards the rear of the field. J. Byrne added that at the entrance to the straight when he placed CAVALIERED under pressure he broke his whip, which prevented further use of the whip in the home straight, and that when the horse was making ground inside the 200m he was obliged to stop riding when he was awkwardly placed at the heels of TUSCON RAIN (E. Wilkinson). J. Byrne added that he was not disapointed with the performance and that CAVALIERED would take improvement out of the race. A post-race veterinary examination of CAVALIERED failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 8: TH Cock Pty Ltd Open H'cap - 1200m
1st – What Happenedhenry 2nd – Faster Son 3rd – Lifebuoy 4th – Sommersea Drive
Connections advised that FASTER SON would be ridden in a handy position just behind the leaders if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
GENERAL SECRETARY (A. Butler) shifted out at the start and made heavy contact with G’DAY OLD MATE (B. Stewart).
CAPTAIN CLAYTON (J. Byrne), when overracing passing the 800m, had to be steadied from the heels of GENERAL SECRETARY.
Approaching the 600m, WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY (L. Cassidy), when overracing, had to be restrained from the heels of FANGLES (L. Rolls). WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY then shifted out and bumped FASTER SON (S. Galloway) out on to CAT EYES (J. Taylor).
From the 500m until entering the straight, FASTER SON (S. Galloway) raced in restricted room to the inside of CAT EYES (J. Taylor) due to WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY shifting out in order to improve.
WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY (L. Cassidy) was held up in the straight and unable to improve until approaching the 300m.
After passing the 200m, FASTER SON shifted out and brushed LIFEBUOY (M. Hellyer).
FANGLES (L. Rolls) was unable to secure clear running in the home straight until approaching the 100m.
On return to scale, S. Galloway reported that FASTER SON was inclined to hang out when placed under pressure in the home straight.
G’DAY OLD MATE (B. Stewart) was unable to secure clear running in the home straight and as a result went to the line not fully tested by its rider.
CAT EYES (J. Taylor) and JOINT CHIEFS (C. Munce) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from J. Byrne regarding the disappointing performance of CAPTAIN CLAYTON. J. Byrne stated that the gelding travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages and when placed under pressure after passing the 400m, failed to finish the race off as expected and proved disappointing.
