Race 1: CHANNEL SEVEN BENCHMARK 90 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Audacious Spirit 2nd – What Happenedhenry 3rd – Joint Chiefs 4th – Falino

KING OF THE KONGO (C. Reith) and FALINO (J. Noonan) were slow to begin.

Both SKATING ON ICE (S. Scriven) and PROST (M. Cahill) were restrained in the early stages from wide barriers to gain a position closer to the rail.

GENERAL PURPLE (R. Wiggins) overraced in the early stages.

OUR MR CASHMAN (B. Richardson) and CAPTAIN CLAYTON (J. Byrne) raced three wide throughout.

Leaving the 1000m BRAVE THE WAY (B. Stewart) shifted in taking SKATING ON ICE, which had improved quickly to that runner’s inside, inwards on to KING OF THE KONGO, which had to be steadied. A short distance later SKATING ON ICE was further hampered when BRAVE THE WAY again shifted in. In the circumstances, bearing in mind the racing manners of KING OF THE KONGO, B. Stewart was reprimanded.

When the pace steadied near the 700m BRAVE THE WAY (B. Stewart) commenced to overrace and had to be steadied from the heels of JOINT CHIEFS (M. Rodd).

GENERAL PURPLE (R. Wiggins) was inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight and approaching the 100m had to alter course to the outside of the tiring OUR MR CASHMAN.

BRAVE THE WAY was unable to secure clear running over the final 150m and as a result went to the line not fully tested.

When asked to explain the performance of SKATING ON ICE, rider S. Scriven stated that from a wide barrier he restrained SKATING ON ICE towards the rear of the field to gain a position closer to the rail and added that near the 800m when GENERAL PURPLE improved to his outside, SKATING ON ICE seemed to resent racing inside horses and did not travel comfortably from that point. He added that the mare failed to make any ground when placed under pressure in the home straight and was disappointing. Trainer L. Kelly advised that SKATING ON ICE’s best performances have been when the mare has raced to the outside of horses and able to make a wide run in the home straight. He added that due to the recent wet weather at the Gold Coast he has been unable to give the mare a jump-out or barrier trial leading into the race, a practice that normally occurs in the horse’s preparation. Mr Kelly further added that SKATING ON ICE will take benefit from today’s race and he undertook to advise stewards of anything that comes to light in coming days which may have affected the horse’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 2: BOLLINGER CHAMPAGNE CLASSIC - 1200m
1st – Sizzling 2nd – Academus 3rd – Dances On Stars 4th – Noogoora Burr

Correct weight was delayed to enable A. Spinks, the rider of 4th placegetter NOOGOORA BURR, the opportunity of viewing the stewards’ patrol footage to determine whether he had grounds to lodge an objection against 3rd placegetter DANCES ON STARS (G. Schofield). After viewing the film, jockey Spinks indicated that he did not wish to lodge an objection and correct weight was duly given on the Judge’s placings.

SIZZLING (C. Munce) was inconvenienced soon after the start when tightened for room between ACADEMUS (K. McEvoy) and SALUTER (J. Byrne), which shifted out slightly.

DISCREET (D. Browne) was inconvenienced after the start when taken out by NOOGOORA BURR (A. Spinks).

MAC’S ADDICTION (L. Cassidy) and ACADEMUS raced three wide throughout.

DANCES ON STARS (G. Schofield) overraced for some distance approaching and passing the 800m.

Rounding the home turn NOOGOORA BURR was held up for clear running when awkwardly placed at the heels of SALUTER.

DISCREET had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight.

Both NOOGOORA BURR and ACADEMUS were inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.

Near the 50m NOOGOORA BURR was hampered when DANCES ON STARS shifted out under pressure. G. Schofield (DANCES ON STARS) was advised that he must stop riding and straighten his mounts sooner than he did on this occasion.

Race 3: CARLTON MID LORD MAYOR’S CUP - 1600m
1st – Solzhenitsyn 2nd – Firebolt 3rd – Ginga Dude 4th – St Germaine

Following reports that GINGA DUDE suffered an interruption to training during this campaign, trainer Mr G. Boyd advised that after the horse’s last start win at Eagle Farm on 21 April it bumped its offside knee causing some swelling. As a result he was obliged to ease the horse’s training for a short time. However, after responding well, GINGA DUDE has resumed full work and Mr Boyd has been happy with the horse and there has been no sign of soreness.

VESPER (L. Nolen) reared when the start was effected and lost ground.

FIREBOLT (N. Rawiller) and SOLZHENITSYN (M. Rodd) were hampered at the start when tightened for room between PEPPERWOOD (L. Cassidy), which shifted in, and FILLYDELPHIA (J. Byrne) which, after being bumped by ST GERMAINE (D. Browne), shifted out.

GATHERING (J. Lloyd) raced three wide in the early stages before being ridden forward to obtain a position outside the leader near the 1000m.

FIREBOLT overraced in the early and middle stages.

GINGA DUDE (J. Taylor) was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.

Stewards sought an explanation in respect of the performance of MISS KEEPSAKE. C. Reith stated that had predicted that GATHERING would go forward and in the early part of the race he trailed that horse with a view to taking up a position midfield or better, however a short distance after the start the rider of GATHERING took hold and as a result he settled towards the rear of the field. C. Reith added that he was satisfied with the effort of MISS KEEPSAKE in the circumstances bearing in mind the slow tempo in the race which made it difficult for MISS KEEPSAKE to make ground over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of MISS KEEPSAKE revealed the filly to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer J. Pride was advised that a veterinary clearance for MISS KEEPSAKE must be produced prior to its next start.

Race 4: GLENLOGAN PARK STAKES - 1350m
1st – Wealth Princess 2nd – Sophie’s Spirit 3rd – Alltherightmoves 4th - Funtantes

ALLTHERIGHTMOVES (M. Cahill), which became fractious after arriving at the barriers, dislodging its rider, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed suitable to race.

RISK AVERSION (C. Munce) was slow to begin.

JUST BEEN LUCKY (J. Lloyd) and BINGO ROSE (M. Hellyer) made contact on two occasions soon after the start.

SAVAGE RIVER (N. Yamada) had to be steadied shortly after the start when tightened for room between LUCKY MORNA (J. Taylor) and WEALTH PRINCESS (M. Walker), which shifted out slightly.

ROSAGAZE (B. Stewart) raced ungenerously in the early stages and threw its head in the air on a number of occasions.

HIDDEN KISSES (M. Rodd) and JUST BEEN LUCKY raced three wide throughout.

ALLTHERIGHTMOVES laid out under pressure in the home straight.

C. Munce, the rider of RISK AVERSION, and K. McEvoy, the rider of PARABLES, reported that their mounts were not suited to the slow tempo set in the middle stages when racing in a rearward position, but both riders were satisfied with the manner in which their mounts finished the race off.

Race 5: HIDDEN DRAGON THE ROSES - 2000m
1st – Invest 2nd – Miss Artistic 3rd – Scorpio Queen 4th – Quintessential

The start was delayed when ANAGOLD (J. Byrne), which became fractious in the barriers, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.

ANAGOLD was slow to begin.

GOLDSLICK (P. Hammersley) and PLAYTIME (J. Taylor) bumped at the start.

P. Mertens, the rider of INVEST, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that passing the winning post on the first occasion he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting in, resulting in ANGELUS (K. McEvoy), which was racing back and to the inside of that runner, having to be severely checked and clipping heels when tightened for room between ROCKSAN (J. Lloyd) and INVEST. SCORPIO QUEEN (N. Rawiller) was inturn bumped by ANGELUS and became awkward for a short distance. P. Mertens’ licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Tuesday, 22 May, and expire at midnight on Sunday, 3 June 2012.

O. Bosson, the rider of VITTORIA, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that at a point passing the 1700m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of PRETTY PINS (M. Cahill), resulting in PRETTY PINS being taken in on to INVEST, which was severely crowded for room, had to be checked and lost ground. O. Bosson’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Sunday, 20 May, and expire at midnight on Saturday, 2 June 2012.

Passing the 1300m SECRET GARDEN (G. Cooksley) commenced to overrace and when being restrained shifted out taking GOLDSLICK outwards. ANGEL OF MERCY (C. Browne), when overracing, then improved to the inside of GOLDSLICK where there was insufficient room, resulting in DOWAGER QUEEN (G. Schofield) having to be severely checked. ANAGOLD (J. Byrne), which was trailing, also had to be severely checked and shifted out taking QUINTESSENTIAL outwards.

DOWAGER QUEEN had difficulty securing clear running in the early part of the home straight and near the 250m had to alter course to the outside of the tiring PLAYTIME (J. Taylor). DOWAGER QUEEN was again held up for clear running over the concluding stages.

Near the 200m GOLDSLICK was tightened for room between QUINTESSENTIAL and ANGEL OF MERCY (C. Brown), which shifted out slightly under pressure.

Stewards sought an explanation from B. Stewart regarding the riding tactics he adopted on TYCOON’S HEART whereby he left a trailing position near the 800m and shifted to a three-wide position and made a sustained run around the field from that point. B. Stewart advised that due to the very slow pace at this stage he was of the opinion that TYCOON’S HEART does not possess the necessary turn of foot when the race was going to develop into a sprint home from the 600m so for this reason he elected to ride forward and improve his position from the 800m as in his view this was the better option in the circumstances. His explanation was accepted.

Race 6: ASCENT SALES FRED BEST CLASSIC - 1350m
1st – Mental 2nd – Amah Rock 3rd – Boys On Tour 4th – Daph ‘N’ Alf

EXTRACEED (B. Avdulla), which took charge of its rider during its preliminary, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon at the barriers and passed suitable to race.

NOISY OCEAN (L. Cassidy) stood flat-footed at the start and lost ground.

SHOW A PRINCE (L. Nolen) and BOYS ON TOUR (J. Lloyd) were slow to begin.

BOYS ON TOUR overraced in the early and middle stages.

Near the 1000m DAPH ‘N’ ALF (J. Taylor) shifted in and bumped AMAH ROCK (J. Noonan), which was taken in on to STATE OF WEALTH (R. McMahon) resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. J. Taylor was issued with a reprimand and advised to afford his fellow riders greater clearance when shifting ground in similar circumstances.

AMAH ROCK, BIGGLES (T. Bell) and SHANGHAI BUND (G. Cooksley) raced three wide throughout.

Near the 800m EXTRACEED, when overracing, improved to the inside of BOYS ON TOUR where there was insufficient room and as a result had to be steadied.

Near the 500m BOYS ON TOUR improved up on to the heels of MENTAL (K. McEvoy) and as a result had to be steadied and shifted out.

Near the 500m (C. Munce) MORNING CAPTAIN had to be steadied when it improved up on to the heels of EASY RUNNING (D. Browne).

MORNING CAPTAIN was unable to secure clear running in the home straight and as a result went to the line not fully tested by its rider.

EMMALENE (M. Rodd) had difficulty securing clear running in the straight and near the 100m had to be checked when tightened for room between SHOW A PRINCE (L. Nolen) and STATE OF WEALTH (R. McMahon) which, when weakening, and after being bumped by MORNING CAPTAIN, shifted out and away from that runner.

AMAH ROCK lost its near fore plate in running.

Stewards sought an explanation in respect of the tactics adopted on PUNCH ON and its overall performance. P. Hammersley stated that the horse was fractious prior to the start and very excitable during its preliminary. He said that the horse raced similarly and as a result he had no alternative but to position the horse up on the speed. He added that the horse’s best performances are when it has been able to race with cover and he is firmly of the view that its behaviour today and the manner in which it raced in the early stages by racing keenly were contributing factors to its poor performance.

Race 7: KIRKS DOOMBEN CUP - 2000m
1st – Mawingo 2nd – Lights Of Heaven 3rd – Manighar 4th – Scenic Shot

The start was delayed when BOOMING (J. Lloyd) had to be resaddled behind the barriers.

Correct weight was delayed to enable L. Nolen, the rider, and P. Moody, the trainer of MANIGHAR to view the stewards’ patrol film to determine whether they had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner MAWINGO (N. Rawiller). After viewing the film, Mr Moody lodged an objection against MAWINGO being declared the winner, alleging interference on the turn out of the front straight. After taking evidence from all parties, stewards formed the view that racing out of the front straight MAWINGO did shift in and tighten the running of MANIGHAR which lost ground. Bearing in mind the margin between the two horses at the finish and the position at which the incident took place, stewards could not be satisfied that had the interference not occurred, MANIGHAR would have beaten MAWINGO to the finishing line and therefore dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings. At a subsequent inquiry N. Rawiller, the rider of MAWINGO, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the turn out of the front straight he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting in resulting in MANIGHAR being tightened for room and when being restrained shifting out across the heels of MAWINGO losing ground. N. Rawiller’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 10 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Sunday, 20 May, and expire at midnight on Friday, 8 June 2012. In considering penalty, stewards were conscious of the evidence provided by the rider of MANIGHAR (L. Nolen), who informed stewards that the racing manners of MANIGHAR had contributed to the amount of ground lost. A short distance later MANIGHAR shifted out, coming into contact with SCENIC SHOT (S. Scriven) which as a result lost ground. Due to SCENIC SHOT losing ground, BOOMING (J. Lloyd) and FORETELLER (C. Brown) had to be restrained. At the same stage, FIBRILLATION (B. Avdulla) shifted outwards when also being restrained, resulting in BOOMING and FORETELLER having to be severely checked when tightened for room to the inside of SHEZ SINSATIONAL (O. Bosson), which had been taken in slightly by WALL STREET (J. Byrne), which was overracing when racing in restricted room inside MR LIGHT BLUE (T. Bell). As this incident could not be attributed to the carelessness of any one rider, no direct action was taken.

SAINT ENCOSTA (G. Schofield) was slow to begin.

MANIGHAR overraced for some distance in the middle stages and near the 1300m had to be steadied from the heels of SCENIC SHOT and shifted out resulting in FORETELLER (C. Brown) being taken wider on the track. FIBRILLATION (B. Avdulla), which was following, also had to be steadied from the heels of MANIGHAR.

Near the 600m MANIGHAR shifted out around the heels of MAWINGO in order to improve and made contact with FORETELLER on a number of occasions.

An inquiry into the reason for SHEZ SINSATIONAL having to be checked near the 400m at a time and date to be fixed. In this incident FORETELLER was inconvenienced.

MAWINGO was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight until after passing the 300m.

A post-race veterinary examination of SHEZ SINSATIONAL failed to reveal any abnormalities.

FIBRILLATION lost its off fore plate in running.

Race 8: DARLEY BRC SPRINT - 1350m
1st – Tiger Tees 2nd – Meet George 3rd – Steel Zip 4th – Free Wheeling

As a result of the protest hearing in Race 7, the start of this race was rescheduled to 4.42 p.m.

DALZAR (A. Spinks), METALLURGICAL (S. Galloway) and GUNDY SON (C. Brown) were slow to begin.

RACING HEART (J. Byrne) was tightened for room at the start between CELTIC DANCER (T. Bell) and FREE WHEELING (K. McEvoy), both of which shifted ground.

V. Duric, the rider of SMOKIN’ JOEY, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 1100m he permitted his mount to shift in, making contact with RACING HEART, resulting in RACING HEART shifting in on to GUNDY SON, which shifted in on to MEET GEORGE (E. Wilkinson), which in turn shifted in tightening the running of DALZAR, which had to be checked and relinquish its position. V. Duric’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Saturday, 26 May, and expire at midnight on Friday, 8 June 2012.

BELLTONE (J. Taylor), BEETHOG (P. Hammersley), DURHAM TOWN (D. Browne) and SMOKIN’ JOEY raced three wide throughout.

Approaching the 400m SMOKIN’ JOEY shifted out around the heels of BEETHOG, taking DURHAM TOWN wider on the track.

FREE WHEELING (K. McEvoy) was held up for clear running until passing the 250m.

BELLTONE laid in under pressure in the straight.

P. Hammersley, the rider of BEETHOG (P. Hammersley) pleaded guilty a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that passing the 250m he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting out, resulting in SMOKIN’ JOEY having to be checked by its rider to avoid the heels of BEETHOG. P. Hammersley’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Saturday, 19 May, and expire at midnight on Friday, 1 June 2012.

A post-race veterinary examination of SMOKIN’ JOEY revealed the gelding to be sore over the offside rump region. Trainer A. Freedman will be advised that SMOKIN’ JOEY would require a veterinary clearance prior to its next start.
