Race 1: Brothers Seven Gold QTIS 3yo H'cap – 1600m
1st – Congo 2nd – Fantisha 3rd – Offense 4th – You’re Mine
B. Stewart, rider of SHOW A NOEE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that a short distance after the start he permitted his mount to shift in, making contact with LUCKY DAY KID (K. Matheson). Jockey Stewart then continued to allow his mount to shift in, taking the rightful running of LUCKY DAY KID, resulting in LUCKY DAY KID having to be checked by its rider to avoid the heels of YOU’RE MINE (T. Harrison). B. Stewart was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 9 meetings, to commence at midnight 12 August, and to expire at midnight, 23 August.
Near the 1200m, LUCKY DAY KID improved up on to the heels of SHOW A NOEE and when being restrained made contact with the running rail.
When the pace steadied after passing the 1200m, COMPLETE SECRET (S. Thurlow) overraced until a point leaving the 900m.
For some distance leaving the 500m, SADDLEBACK (R. McMahon) commenced to lay out and got its head on the side and raced ungenerously.
COMPLETE SECRET raced 3 deep for the majority of the race.
Stewards sought an explanation from B. Stewart regarding the performance of SHOW A NOEE. B. Stewart stated that the gelding was not suited by the slow tempo in the middle stages of the race and added that he would have liked to have improved his position from the 600m but was unable to do so when awkwardly placed at the heels of YOU’RE MINE (T. Harrison). He added that SHOW A NOEE was unable to sprint when placed under pressure in the early part of the straight, but in the circumstances he was not entirely disappointed with the gelding’s performance.
Jockey S. Thurlow was asked to explain the reason why he did not allow COMPLETE SECRET to stride forward in the middle stages when the pace was slow and his mount was pulling hard. He explained that he was instructed to attempt to ride the colt with cover if possible, and that near the 1000m he obtained cover for a short distance but was taken wider on the track when awkwardly placed at the heels of FRIDAY NIGHTS (C. Munce). Jockey Thurlow added that in hindsight it may have been a better option to allow the horse to stride forward to sit outside the leader, OFFENSE (A. Allen).
B. Stewart, rider of SHOW A NOEE, dropped his whip near the 200m.
Race 2: Eyeman Optometrists Open H'cap - 1600m
1st – Topping 2nd – They Won’t Last 3rd – Lucky Luna 4th - Deacon
THEY WON’T LAST (R. Wiggins) was slow to begin.
Trainer L. Kelly was asked to explain the riding tactics adopted on LUCKY LUNA, which were in contrast to its most recent racing pattern. Mr Kelly stated that the field did not have a natural leader so he instructed apprentice K. Matheson to attempt to lead today if possible. He added that he would have preferred apprentice Matherson to have slowed the speed more than he did in the middle stages which would have provided the gelding with the opportunity to finish the race off strongly. Stewards reminded trainer Mr L. Kelly of his obligations to inform stewards of any variation in tactics.
Race 3: JW Bell/Chartis F&M Class 6 Plate – 1350m
1st – Hidden Kisses 2nd – Granzella 3rd – Moneysaver 4th – Magic Tartan
WABEEL (C. Munce) was slow to begin.
Near the 600m, WELCOME PARADE (T. Harrison) shifted out in an endeavour to improve and in so doing made contact with WABEEL (C. Munce) on several occasions.
Race 4: Gouldson Legal Open H'cap - 2200m
1st – Saint Encosta 2nd – Racing Heart 3rd – Warrior Within 4th – Contract Caterer
Near the 1000m, COURT CONNECTION (K. Matheson), when crossing to the lead, failed to afford RACING HEART (A. Allen) sufficient clearance, resulting in RACING HEART (A. Allen) having to be steadied. RANDOM ORBIT (R. McMahon), which was following, was obliged to shift outwards away from the heels of RACING HEART and in doing so forced WARRIOR WITHIN wider on the track. At a subsequent inquiry, K. Matheson, rider of COURT CONNECTION, was severely reprimanded and advised to give his fellow riders the required clearance when crossing.
Jockey G. Cooksley reported at scale that he was held up for clear running in the early part of the straight when unable to bring CONTRACT CATERER wider on the track due to BILLUM racing hard up to his outside, and when placed awkwardly at the heels of PINOT GIRL (T. Bell). He added that he was able to obtain clear running inside the final 100m.
A post race veterinary examination of BELL ACADEMY revealed the gelding to be showing signs of soreness in the off fore fetlock. Trainer B. Herne was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for BELL ACADEMY prior to its next race start.
Race 5: Ray White Ascot NMW H'cap - 1600m
1st – Iking 2nd – Run Jake Run 3rd – Lines Of Time 4th - Rhetoric
Stewards accepted the explanation for the late declaration of rider for BELLADONNA DELAGO.
RUN JAKE RUN (K. Matheson), BRAMPTON (L. Cassidy) and BELLADONNA DELAGO (M. Hellyer) were slow to begin.
Near the 1100m, COLLECTOR (J. Lloyd) commenced to overrace and after restraining from the heels of MORE ON THE TOE (E. Wilkinson), shifted out, taking BRAMPTON (L. Cassidy) and BELLADONNA DELAGO wider on the track.
Apprentice T. Harrison, rider of LINES OF TIME, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 450m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of GOLDCAT (A. Allen), resulting in GOLDCAT being taken in towards the running rail and having to be checked by its rider. T. Harrison was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 11 August and to expire a midnight, 23 August.
VENTURE ON (R. McMahon) was held up in the early part of the straight and again had difficulty obtaining clear running inside the final 100m.
BRAMPTON, BELLADONNA DELAGO and WHITE PHOSPHORUS (A. Butler) raced 3 wide for the majority of the race.
Race 6: McInnes Wilson 1MW H'cap – 1110m
1st – Too Many Reds 2nd – Liesele 3rd – Onetimeatbandcamp 4th – Jungle Heat
Trainer S. Andrew was reprimanded for failing to notify M. Hellyer as the rider of RELEASE ME by the prescribed time. In issuing a reprimand only, stewards took into account Mr Andrew’s exemplary record regarding infringements of this rule.
Trainer M. Kropp was reprimanded for failing to produce the Document of Description for PONZI SCHEME. In assessing penalty stewards took into account Mr Kropp’s good record regarding breaches of this rule.
Apprentice A. Butler was examined by the doctor and stood down from remaining engagements. As no apprentices were available, E. Wilkinson was substituted as the rider of TYCOON’S PRIDE and S. Galloway as the rider of FEAR NO OTHER in Race 8.
Near the 800m, RELEASE ME (M. Hellyer), which had commenced to overrace, had to be checked from the heels of ONETIMEATBANDCAMP (T. Bell) and lost ground.
THE REVELLER (J. Lloyd) had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight and over the concluding stages.
TYCOON’S PRIDE (E. Wilkinson) raced wide throughout.
S. Galloway reported that JUNGLE HEAT hung out for a major part of the race.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice A. Allen and trainer T. Thomas regarding NICKIERA settling at the rear of the field, which was in contrast to its recent racing pattern. Apprentice Allen explained that it was his intention to settle in a forward position however NICKIERA was fractious in the barriers and then slow to begin, and rather than riding forward from the wide barrier, which would have resulted in him being caught extremely wide in the early stages, he elected to ride the horse towards the rear of the field. Mr Thomas confirmed the instructions and agreed after viewing the stewards’ footage of the race that NICKIERA was slow to begin and apprentice Thomas had little other option but to ride the horse back in the field.
PONZI SCHEME, which bled during the event, will be barred from racing for period of 3 months.
Race 7: Rohrig Construction Open H'cap – 1200m
1st – War Ends 2nd – The Sixties 3rd – Power O’raylee 4th – Back On Top
Connections advised that SKATING ON ICE would be ridden in a more forward position if circumstances permit.
SHEKINAAR (J. Lloyd) began awkwardly and shifted in, bumping the hind quarters of POWER O’RAYLEE (R. McMahon).
Near the 200m, SKATING ON ICE (A. Allen) improved into a narrow run between POWER O’RAYLEE and ROCKDALE (M. Hellyer) and in doing so made contact with those horses.
BACK ON TOP (T. Bell) and WAR ENDS raced wide throughout.
Passing the 200m, SKATING ON ICE (A. Allen) improved into a narrow run between POWER O’RAYLEE and ROCKDALE and in doing so made contact with those horses. As a result, ROCKDALE became unbalanced and after receiving some tightening from BACK ON TOP (T. Bell), which shifted in at the same stage, had to be checked.
J. Lloyd, rider of SHEKINAAR, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that leaving the 200m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of SKATING ON ICE and taking that runner’s line of running, resulting in A. Allen having to take hold and take evasive action to avoid the heels of SHEKINAAR. J. Lloyd was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 11 August, and to expire at midnight, 24 August.
GREY ASSIGNMENT (C. Munce) was held up for clear running in the straight until approaching the final 150m.
When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of WAR ENDS today, stable representative Mr A. Edmonds advised that the horse had worked well subsequent to its second placing at Grafton on 5 July and at its most recent start the gelding did not appreciate the slow conditions.
SKATING ON ICE lost its near fore plate in running.
Race 8: Black Label Corp Events CG&E Class 6 Plate – 1350m
1st – Startsmeup 2nd – Rapid Leica Dane 3rd – Magic Shuffle 4th - Danagaze
Connections advised that STARTSMEUP would be ridden with cover if circumstances permit. STARTSMEUP was subsequently ridden midfield.
RAPID LEICA DANE (R. Wiggins), which was fractious in the barriers stalls, was removed from the barriers, examined the veterinary surgeon and passed suitable to race.
Jockey J. Lloyd reported that STARSMEUP hung in under pressure in the home straight.
MAGIC SHUFFLE (E. Wilkinson), STARTSMEUP and DANAGAZE (R. Hurdle) raced wide throughout.
