Race 1: ORMISTON COLLEGE BENCHMARK 75 F&M H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Bang On 2nd – For Mia 3rd – Miss Bradbury 4th – Sky Effort

FOR MIA (L. Cassidy) blundered at the start.

Leaving the 1000m MASSURI (A. Allen) commenced to overrace and improved up on to the heels of MY BELLYDANCER (M. Hellyer) and when being restrained shifted out. A short distance later MASSURI then shifted in when insufficiently clear of OUR HUSSEY (T. Bell), resulting in OUR HUSSEY having to be steadied. OUR HUSSEY then overraced for a short distance thereafter. Apprentice A. Allen was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear.

LUCKY SONGS (T. Harrison) and SKY EFFORT (G. Cooksley) raced wide throughout.

DANE PRINCESS (P. Hammersley) had difficulty securing clear running over the concluding stages.

Apprentice A. Allen was asked to explain the riding tactics he adopted on MASSURI in the middle stages where it appeared he had the opportunity to shift wider to a trailing position three wide behind SKY EFFORT approaching the 600m. A. Allen explained that rather than attempt to shift OUR HUSSEY wider at that stage to improve his position, he elected to remain one off the rail trailing MY BELLYDANCER as he was of the view that he would save ground rounding the home turn and obtain a run in the early stages of the home straight. Apprentice Allen added that rounding the home turn he made contact on a number of occasions with OUR HUSSEY in an effort to improve his position and when this was unsuccessful he was held up for clear running for a majority of the home straight resulting in MASSURI not being fully tested. Stewards advised A. Allen that in their view it would have been a better option for him to improve his position near the 600m three wide to ensure that he was able to obtain clear running soon after straightening. Stewards did not feel his error amounted to a breach of the rules.

Race 2: BRAND & SLATER F&M H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Liesele 2nd – Beggin 3rd – Sea Marvista 4th – Pretty Composed

PUNCH ON (P. Hammersley) raced fiercely in the early and middle stages.

An explanation was sought from C. Munce, the rider of AROUND THE WORLD, regarding the horse’s poor performance. Jockey Munce informed stewards that the mare travelled well and when the pace was slow in the middle stages he elected to commence a forward move three wide from the 600m, however AROUND THE WORLD was immediately under pressure and tired badly in the straight, proving very disappointing. Trainer J. Hanna could offer no tangible explanation for the horse’s poor performance and advised that he intended to have blood tests conducted on the mare early in the week and undertook to advise stewards of the results.

Race 3: ORMISTON COLLEGE OLD COLLEGIANS CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1600m
1st – Danagaze 2nd – Revitalise 3rd – Playaction 4th – Margins

EASTLINE (M. Hellyer) stood flat-footed at the start and lost considerable ground. Stable representative Mr S. Morrisey was advised that the horse must gain a further barrier certificate prior to its next race start.

MARGINS (T. Harrison) was slow to begin.

Approaching the 450m ONETIMEATBANDCAMP (J. Lloyd) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so forced CYCLONE AL (L. Cassidy) wider on the track.

DANAGAZE (A. Allen) had difficulty securing clear running in the home straight until near the 100m.

T. Bell reported that NOBLE JESTER overraced in the early stages.

Race 4: HANRICK CURRAN OPEN H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Solzhenitsyn 2nd – Bold Glance 3rd – War Ends 4th – Tycoon’s Pride

The start of this race was delayed when WAR ENDS (C. Munce) and TYCOON’S PRIDE (P. Hammersley) had to be resaddled on arrival at the barriers.

On jumping away SOLZHENITSYN (D. Browne) made contact with the nearside barrier partition, unbalancing its rider.

Race 5: ORMISTON COLLEGE REDBACK QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1110m
1st – Better Than Ready 2nd – Reflectance 3rd – Ten Gauge 4th – The Right One

The start of this race was delayed when STELLENBOSCH LOVE (T. Bell), which reared over after arriving at the barriers, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed suitable to race.

Connections advised that it was intended to have SNIPZU (K. Matheson) ridden in a forward position from the wide barrier if circumstances permit. SNIPZU raced wide throughout.

LE CAP (C. Munce) and PALAIS COURT (L. Cassidy) made contact at the start.

REFLECTANCE (R. Wiggins) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in making contact with the hind quarters of TEN GAUGE (G. Colless).

Near the 300m THE RIGHT ONE (M. Cahill) shifted out under pressure and bumped TEN GAUGE.

L. Cassidy reported that PALAIS COURT did not appreciate racing between runners and was reluctant to hold its position in the middle stages when racing between LE CAP and KHAANTANTES (T. Harrison).

T. Bell reported that STELLENBOSCH LOVE hung out for the majority of the event which resulted in him having to cover extra ground through the middle stages.

Race 6: ROHRIG GROUP CLASS 6 PLATE - 2200m
1st – Attica 2nd – They Won’t Last 3rd – Buffett 4th – White City

HANDSOME DANE (G. Cooksley) stood flat-footed as the start was effected and lost considerable ground. After considering the horse’s good record and an undertaking from trainer O. Glue that he would remove the blinkers from the horse’s gear as he felt this had been a main contributor to the horse missing the start racing in blinkers for the first time, stewards placed a warning on the horse.

THEY WON’T LAST (J. Lloyd) overraced and refused to settle in the early and middle stages.

Stewards sought an explanation from T. Bell in respect of the seemingly disappointing performance of EUREKA JACK. Jockey Bell stated that the horse travelled only fairly during running to the extent that he was forced to pressure the horse at various stages during the event to maintain his position. T. Bell added that he attempted to improve his position from the 800m, however EUREKA JACK did not accelerate and proved disappointing. Trainer K. Schweida informed stewards that he was not entirely disappointed with the performance of EUREKA JACK and would consider applying blinkers for the horse’s next start. A post-race veterinary examination of EUREKA JACK revealed no abnormalities and a swab sample was taken.

Trainer B. Hill was questioned in regards to the seemingly improved performance of BUFFETT (P. Hammersley). Mr Hill advised stewards that after the horse’s first run under his care at Eagle Farm on 1 September 2012, which disappointed him, he effected several gear changes and after assessing the horse’s form, believed its best performances have been when ridden closer to the speed, which was the tactic employed today. Stewards noted his explanation.

Race 7: ORMISTON COLLEGE BENCHMARK 75 C,G&E H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Someday 2nd – Mujahu 3rd – Magic Shuffle 4th – Alvitas

The start of this race was delayed when apprentice R. Hurdle sustained a harmless fall from BLOW A KISS during the preliminary. BLOW A KISS was examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed suitable to race.

HANGOVER HENRY (R. Myers) was slow to begin.

SOMEDAY (C. Munce) began awkwardly.

ALVITAS (A. Allen), which was a little slow to begin, was tightened for room shortly after the start between HARNEY (M. Cahill) and TEN SECONDS (C. Pye), both of which shifted ground.

SIDE TO SIDE (L. Cassidy), MAGIC SHUFFLE (J. Lloyd) and HARNEY raced wide throughout.

TEN SECONDS overraced in the early stages.

Near the 300m PRIMARY COLOUR (T. Harrison) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with SIDE TO SIDE.

Race 8: GOLD CLASS CLEANING CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1110m
1st – I’m Cool 2nd – Merryanna 3rd – Dee Bee Nine 4th – Run With Me

I’M COOL (K. Matheson) began awkwardly, unbalancing its rider.

NICKIERA (R. Myers), JUNGLE HEAT (S. Galloway) and RUN WITH ME (P. Hammersley) were all tightened for room at the start between TEMPLE STREET (A. Spinks) and D’JET (D. Browne), which shifted in after blundering at the start.

JUNGLE HEAT raced ungenerously in the early stages.

D’JET and NICKIERA raced wide throughout.

G. Colless (DEE BEE NINE) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out near the 450m, resulting in DE DOZEN STARS (C. Munce) having to be momentarily steadied.

RUN WITH ME bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer T. Whittington was advised that as this was the first occasion on which the horse has bled, RUN WITH ME will be ineligible to start for 3 months and prior to resuming racing must perform satisfactorily in a gallop over 1000m in the presence of a steward.

A post-race veterinary examination of D’JET revealed the gelding to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer C. Lavin was advised that prior to D’JET resuming racing she must provide a veterinary clearance, including the results of an ECG, and the horse must trial to the satisfaction of stewards.
