BALTORO (M. Cahill), which reared in the barriers and got its leg over the partition, was removed from the barriers. THE BANKER (K. Matheson), which became fractious and reared, was also removed from the barriers. Both horses then underwent veterinary inspections which passed them fit to start, resulting in a short delay to the start of the race.

THE BANKER (K. Matheson) raced wide in the early stages.

THE BANKER overraced in the middle stages.

PRIZE (J. Byrne) was inclined to lay in when placed under pressure over the final 100m.

Following this event J. Byrne was stood down from his remaining engagements by the Club doctor and riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 2: PROGRAMMED PROPERTY SERVICES MAIDEN H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Novikov 2nd – Blucara 3rd – Benji Bullet 4th – Diamond Trail

Connections advised that DIAMOND TRAIL (D. Green) would be ridden in a rearward position. The horse was ridden accordingly.

NOVIKOV (M. Cahill) reared as the start was effected and lost ground.

BELLINGER VALLEY (P. Holmes) was slow to begin.

DIAMOND TRAIL raced wide throughout and near the 700m shifted in and made contact with THE FIGHTING IRISH (P. Hammersley), resulting in THE FIGHTING IRISH becoming unbalanced momentarily.

Apprentice K. Matheson (NUMZAAN) dropped his whip near the 150m.

Trainer B. Baldwin reported that BELLINGER VALLEY lost its off hind plate in running.

Race 3: KIRKS BENCHMARK 75 C,G&E H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Cyclone Billy 2nd – In A Storm 3rd –Stephen Got Even 4th – What About Me

EXPRESSWAY (K. Pope) was slow to begin.

Near the 800m EXPRESSWAY, which had commenced to overrace and was awkwardly placed at the heels of STEPHEN GOT EVEN (P. Schmidt), had to be steadied.

Race 4: BOLLINGER BENCHMARK 75 F&M H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Amalfi Dreams 2nd – Gatineau River 3rd – Gotitallwrong 4th – Index Page

AMALFI DREAMS (J. Lloyd) was a little slow to begin.

KARANJA (P. Holmes) and GOTITALLWRONG (M. Cahill) made contact on jumping away.

Near the 800m GATINEAU RIVER (K. Yoshida) was eased away from the heels of AMALFI DREAMS which shifted in.

Trainer R. Heathcote reported that GOTITALLWRONG lost its off fore and off hind plates in running.

Apprentice G. Goold (FELONY FLIGHT) was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out to the finish of the race.

Race 5: YELLOWGLEN QTIS 3YO C&G MAIDEN H’CAP - 1110m
1st – Smasher 2nd – Don’tcryargentina 3rd – Purest Haven 4th – Play Luck

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer L. Birchley’s stable representative for the late scratching of THESE STREETS at 7.25 a.m.

ARCTIC RED (G. Goold), which reared in the barriers and struck its head, was a late scratching at 2.50 p.m. on veterinary advice. Trainer B. Bowditch was advised that a warning was being placed on the horse’s barrier manners. Mr Bowditch advised stewards that he would experiment with the addition of gear prior to the horse’s next start. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on ARCTIC RED be refunded in full, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

0 cent in the dollar for the Win – SMASHER
0 cent in the dollar for place of winner – SMASHER
8 cents in the dollar for 2nd place – DON’TCRYARGENTINA
7 cents in the dollar for 3rd place – PUREST HAVEN

PUREST HAVEN (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.

SANDBAR JACK (J. Stanley), which was a little slow to begin, was tightened shortly after the start between EL SOBRINO (R. Goltz) and SMASHER (M. Cahill), both of which shifted ground. In this incident SANDBAR JACK lost ground.

DIE YOUNG (S. Bogenhuber), which was slow to begin, was tightened for room shortly after the start between SENOR CEDAT (B. Stewart) and GUNDY STAR (K. Wharton), both of which shifted ground.

Near the 800m EL SOBRINO, which raced ungenerously throughout the event, shifted in abruptly and in doing so hampered BETICAN (K. Pope).

Also near the 800m NORTHERN WARRIOR (J. Taylor) and PUREST HAVEN commenced to overrace for a short distance.

Near the 200m EL SOBRINO was eased when tightened for room between PLAY LUCK (K. Matheson and TREES A CROWD (Michael Palmer), which shifted ground. Michael Palmer was issued with a reprimand.

B. Stewart (SENOR CEDAT) was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out to the finish of the race.

BETICAN was inclined to hang out rounding the home turn and became awkwardly placed at the heels of SANDBAR JACK. K. Pope reported that soon after straightening on BETICAN he was obliged to lose some ground and shift to the outside of the heels of SANDBAR JACK, which was weakening, and added that the gelding will be better suited in races of a further distance than that of today’s event.

The veterinary surgeon reported that TREES A CROWD was galloped on on the nearside hind leg.

Race 6: DRUMBEATS @ LYNDHURST CLASS 3 PLATE - 1030m
1st – Hollyweird 2nd – Epic 3rd – All But Grey 4th – Miss Leibert

REPETITIOUS (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.

EPIC (M. Cahill) and TROPIC GEM (K. Matheson) bumped on jumping away.

Near the 800m ISITYOURBIRTHDAY (P. Hammersley) and MISS LEIBERT (M. Vance) were tightened for room between SEQ THE GENERAL (A. Taylor) and HARLEY DOWN (G. Goold) which, when overracing at the heels of ALL BUT GREY (A. Spinks), shifted out despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in both ISITYOURBIRTHDAY and MISS LEIBERT, having to be checked. At a subsequent inquiry stewards could not attribute blame to any one rider and therefore took no action.

EPIC commenced to overrace during the middle stages.

Near the 250m EPIC was momentarily held up when disappointed for a run between MISS LEIBERT and HARLEY DOWN, which shifted out under pressure.

HARLEY DOWN bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer G. Want was advised that HARLEY DOWN would be ineligible to compete in races for a period of 3 months, and prior to resuming racing must perform satisfactorily in a 1000m gallop in the presence of a steward.

Jockey P. Hammersley reported that after being caught three wide ISITYOURBIRTHDAY was the first horse under pressure and proved most disappointing in the home straight. He added that the mare was up in class today and he had advised connections to consider the addition of blinkers for the horse’s next start. A post-race veterinary examination of ISITYOURBIRTHDAY revealed no significant findings.

Race 7: CARLTON DRAUGHT CLASS 3 H’CAP – 1350m
1st – Viking Heart 2nd – O’grady 3rd – St Darci 4th – Castle Hill

CASTLE HILL (M. Cahill), which was fractious in the barriers, was removed and underwent a veterinary inspection which cleared the horse to start.

CASTLE HILL (M. Cahill) and FLYING LAMBORGINI (J. Lloyd) bumped on jumping away.

KING LUDWIG (E. Wilkinson) was very slow to begin.

CANDENTE (M. Hellyer) overraced during the early and middle stages.

COUNTACH (K. Wharton), CANDENTE and KING LUDWIG raced wide throughout.

Jockey K. Wharton reported that near the 800m COUNTACH commenced to race keenly and when he endeavoured to settle the horse the bit pulled through the horse’s mouth. He added that rounding the home turn COUNTACH hung out badly, taking KING LUDWIG and CANDENTE extremely wide on the track and losing considerable ground. COUNTACH took no competitive part in the event from this point onwards. Following the event stewards examined the bridle of COUNTACH and found it to be of good quality. Trainer M. Dunn’s stable representative advised that the intention would be to send COUNTACH for a spell.

Over the concluding stages VIKING HEART (K. Matheson) shifted in and bumped with O’GRADY (L. Morrison) on two occasions.

Race 8: VITTORIA CLASS 4 H’CAP - 1640m
1st – Bustopher Jones 2nd – Calculation 3rd – Kistamon 4th – My Quilter

BUSTOPHER JONES (E. Wilkinson), which had a small laceration on the outside of the offside hock, was examined by the veterinary surgeon at the barriers and cleared to start.

CROSS THE STAR (M. Vance) and COBBANVILLA (M. Hellyer) were slow to begin.

VACALLO (M. Cahill) raced wide until a point nearing the 1000m where it was able to assume the position sitting outside the lead.

Rounding the home turn MY QUILTER (K. Matheson) and VOLUNTARY (K. Yoshida) were tightened for room between CALCULATION (A. Spinks) and KISTAMON (Matthew Palmer), which shifted out. In this incident MY QUILTER made heavy contact with CALCULATION, resulting in A. Spinks losing the use of his offside iron.

Near the 300m VOLUNTARY had to be steadied when tightened for room between MY QUILTER and KISTAMON, which shifted out and away from BUSTOPHER JONES. Jockey Matthew Palmer (KISTAMON) was issued with a severe reprimand and advised to take greater care when shifting ground in future.

E. Wilkinson, the rider of BUSTOPHER JONES, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that over the concluding stages he permitted his mount to shift out whilst riding it along with the whip when insufficiently clear of KISTAMON, contributing to interference suffered by that runner in having to be checked. Jockey Wilkinson’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Saturday, 12 January, and expire at midnight on Wednesday, 23 January 2013.

A. Spinks, the rider of CALCULATION, was also issued with a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that over the concluding stages he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of KISTAMON, contributing to interference suffered by that runner in having to be checked. After jockey Spinks pleaded not guilty to the charge and made submissions in his defence, stewards found that the shift from CALCULATION was minimal, which was exacerbated by KISTAMON contacting CALCULATION on the hind quarters, which had the effect of forcing CALCULATION in further on to that runner. Stewards were mindful that A. Spinks had made an effort to relieve the pressure and in the circumstances gave A. Spinks the benefit of the doubt and did not proceed further with the charge.

A post-race veterinary examination of DAPH ‘N’ ALF (P. Schmidt), which weakened in the home straight, revealed no abnormalities.
