Race 1: RELDACO QTIS 2YO H’CAP - 1020m
SUZY’S BOY (A. Holt) jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
After passing the 800m SUZY’S BOY began to overrace and had to be restrained from the heels of STROAK (M. Cahill) for some distance.
SUZY’S BOY continued to overrace in the middle stages.
SHADOWSIDE (C. Munce) raced three wide without cover throughout.
SHADOWSIDE was inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 100m.
J. Byrne (RAW BONE), who was dislodged in the mounting yard prior to the event, was examined by the Club doctor and cleared to fulfil his engagement.
Race 2: ENTIRE RECRUITMENT 0MW H’CAP - 1630m
Trainer B. Smith advised that if circumstances allow, ELUSIVE STORM (E. Wilkinson) would be ridden forward in the field, which is in contrast to its most recent starts. The horse was ridden accordingly.
SPARKLING SOUND (T. Harrison) raced three wide without cover throughout.
Stewards questioned R. Wiggins as to whether, after beginning well, he considered allowing TAIL AND ALL to stride forward to the lead approaching the first turn. Jockey Wiggins stated that he anticipated settling in a handy position with cover if possible and when ELUSIVE STORM improved to his outside leaving the 1300m he was satisfied to allow that runner to cross to the lead and sit outside of that runner. He added that from the 800m when he applied some pressure to TAIL AND ALL the gelding was not travelling as well as he expected and did not sprint in the home straight when placed under hard riding. R. Wiggins further added that TAIL AND ALL became uncharacteristically agitated in the mounting yard today and behind the barriers, which in his view may have had an effect on today’s performance.
A post-race veterinary examination of MINI DELAGO (M. Cahill) revealed the mare to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer P. Youngberry will be advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for MINI DELAGO prior to its next start.
Race 3: HARCOURTS GREEN LIVING F&M CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1200m
Apprentice A. Holt was fined $300 for failing to claim his full allowance on VIS A TERGO.
Correct weight was delayed while stewards viewed the patrol footage in the home straight to ascertain whether there were grounds for 2nd placegetter DIVINE CITY (C. Munce) to lodge an objection against the winner VIS A TERGO (A. Holt). After viewing the videos, stewards were satisfied that no grounds existed and declared correct weight on the numbers semaphored.
FLYING JET (V. Colgan) jumped away awkwardly.
When questioned as to the performance of GYPSY PEARL, apprentice A. Allen advised that after being slow into stride the mare was unable to muster sufficient early speed and failed to travel comfortably at any stage. Apprentice Allen was of the view that GYPSY PEARL is better suited on rain-affected tracks.
Race 4: BARTONS BAYSIDE 1MW H’CAP - 1350m
VACALLO (R. Wiggins) knuckled badly at the start.
TAPAKEG (K. Wharton) was slow to begin.
DEB’S HOPE (J. Byrne) raced three wide without cover throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce regarding the performance of WHAT ABOUT ME. C. Munce stated that from the 600m, when racing at the rear of the field, he was forced to cover additional ground when he was unable to gain a trail into the race when DEB’S HOPE commenced to weaken. C. Munce added that he was not dissatisfied with today’s performance and that WHAT ABOUT ME will be better suited in races longer than that of today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination of WHAT ABOUT ME (C. Munce) revealed no abnormalities.
Race 5: IONA COLLEGE OLD BOYS QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1630m
HOPFGARTEN (T. Harrison) was slow to begin.
TORNADO MISS (M. Vance) jumped away awkwardly and made heavy contact with ROCK SCENT (M. Cahill), which shifted out and bumped heavily with MISS SUNSET (R. Wiggins), and then shifted in and again made contact with TORNADO MISS.
HEART STEALER (C. McIver) overraced in the middle stages.
After passing the 300m HEART STEALER shifted in when weakening and made contact with VOODOO BLUE MAGIC (J. Johnson).
ROCK SCENT was obliged to alter course after passing the 300m to the inside of ELITE ECHELON in order to improve.
A post-race veterinary examination of ELITE ECHELON (G. Goold), which performed disappointingly, revealed no significant findings. Trainer R. McCall advised that ELITE ECHELON will now be sent for an immediate spell.
When asked to explain the disappointing performance of CANNYZING, apprentice R. Jamieson stated that the gelding never travelled well at any stage and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of CANNYZING revealed the gelding to be exhibiting soreness in the near foreleg. Trainer H. Norman advised that CANNYZING will now be sent for an immediate spell.
Race 6: JYE COOPER GROUP CLASS 6 H’CAP - 2030m
As no apprentice was available, stewards permitted C. McIver to replace L. Tarrant as the rider of SNOW’S A LADY.
Soon after the start BUFFETT (E. Wilkinson) shifted out and made contact with HUSH POWER (R. Wiggins).
After passing the winning post on the first occasion GRAB THE LOOT shifted in and made heavy contact with the running rail, which resulted in T. Harrison becoming unbalanced and losing the use of her nearside iron for a short distance. VOLKHERE (K. Matheson) was inconvenienced in this incident.
M. Cahill reported that SPECIAL MISS hung out for a major part of the race.
C. Munce also reported that QUICK WITTED hung out when placed under pressure from the 600m.
When asked to explain the disappointing performance of VOLKHERE, apprentice K. Matheson stated that after being slow to begin he settled at the rear of the field and when the tempo increased from the 800m, VOLKHERE was immediately under pressure and did not respond to his riding from that point. A post-race veterinary examination of VOLKHERE revealed no significant findings. Stable representative for trainer R. Heathcote was also disappointed with today’s performance and indicated that veterinary tests will be carried out on the gelding in coming days, the results of which will be reported to stewards. Stewards advised connections that in the absence of any significant findings VOLKHERE will be required to barrier trial prior to its next start.
Trainer B. Hill advised stewards that the immediate racing future of BUFFETT will be reviewed after the gelding compounded over the final 500m.
Trainer P. Sexton was advised that SNOW’S A LADY, which trailed the field throughout and was beaten a considerable distance, will be ineligible to compete in the metropolitan area until such time as it establishes more competitive form in provincial areas.
Race 7: NAIRN CONSTRUCTIONS OPEN H’CAP - 1200m
Connections advised that from the outside barrier EXCELLANTES (V. Colgan), which usually races on the pace, would be ridden in a rearward position. The horse was ridden accordingly.
Apprentice T. Harrison was dislodged from FACILE TIGRE during its preliminary. FACILE TIGRE was soon recaptured, examined by the veterinary surgeon behind the barriers and cleared to race.
When asked for an explanation regarding the performance of FACILE TIGRE, apprentice T. Harrison stated that the gelding never travelled comfortably and failed to respond to her riding from the 500m. Trainer D. Roberts indicated that the gelding had worked very well leading into today’s race and he was confident of a forward showing. Mr Roberts added that following today’s disappointing performance he will have veterinary tests carried out, the results of which he will report to stewards. A post-race veterinary examination of FACILE TIGRE revealed no significant findings and a swab sample was taken. Mr Roberts was advised that the gelding will be required to compete in an official barrier trial prior to racing again.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice K. Matheson regarding the performance of VINTAGE MOSS. Apprentice Matheson stated that he had specific instructions to remain one wide and in order to comply with these instructions he had to restrain the gelding in the early stages to trail FACILE TIGRE. He added that VINTAGE MOSS travelled comfortably in the middle stages, however did not accelerate as he expected when placed under pressure over the final 500m. He further added that in his view VINTAGE MOSS is better suited on bigger tracks.
Stewards questioned V. Colgan regarding the riding tactics he adopted in the early part of the home straight where he shifted EXCELLANTES wider near the 300m behind POOR JUDGE (A. Holt) when the opportunity existed to remain on the fence and attempt to improve to the inside of THE SIXTIES (A. Allen). V. Colgan stated that it was his intention to shift wider soon after straightening in an attempt to make ground to the outside of horses. Stewards, although mindful that EXCELLANTES peaked on its run over the final 100m, advised jockey Colgan that in their view he had erred by shifting wider soon after straightening as there was significant room to improve on the rail at that point.
Race 8: RICK’S DOORS C,G&E CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1200m
As no apprentice was available, stewards permitted C. McIver to replace L. Tarrant as the rider of BUNDU BOY.
Trainer M. Dunn advised that due to the apparent lack of pace in the race, QFIGHTER (T. Harrison) would settle in a handy position with cover if possible. The horse was ridden accordingly.
OAKFIELD COMMANDS (J. Byrne) began very awkwardly.
COVERT CHARMOUR blundered badly at the start and dislodged rider A. Allen.
Near the 900m SAN JOSE (R. Wiggins) had to be checked to avoid the heels of the riderless COVERT CHARMOUR.
Approaching the 900m THE STOREMAN (M. Vance), which was inclined to overrace, had to be steadied from the heels of SIR LUMINAR (C. Munce), which shifted in when not fully clear. C. Munce was advised to show greater care when shifting ground in future.
After passing the 900m JUNGLE HEAT (V. Colgan) commenced to hang out and from the 800m was shifted wider on the track. Trainer B. Smith will be advised that the gelding will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to racing again.
