GENERAL

Following the downgrading of the track to HEAVY 8, stewards acceded to requests from trainers to scratch their horses as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: BREAKFAST CREEK HOTEL QTIS 2YO H’CAP - 1110m

ELJETEM (J. Byrne) was slow to begin.

Passing the 800m ELLE LOU (C. Munce) was inclined to shift in away from CASTANITA (M. Cahill), resulting in THAT PRETTY GIRL (E. Wilkinson) being momentarily tightened for room.

Near the 550m NO TIME TO THINK (R. McMahon) improved up on to the heels of THAT PRETTY GIRL and had to be steadied.

GENERATOR GEORGE, when racing wide, hung out in the middle stages and proved difficult to ride. Trainer L. Kelly was advised that a warning would be placed on the colt’s racing manners.

E. Wilkinson reported that THAT PRETTY GIRL never travelled comfortably at any stage and failed to handle today’s prevailing track conditions.

A post-race veterinary examination of CELESTIAL DRAGON (T. Bell) revealed that the mare had sustained cuts to the medial aspect of its hocks.

Race 2: SOUTH BANK INSURANCE BROKERS OPEN H’CAP - 2200m

As apprentice A. Holt was to be overweight, apprentice A. Allen was substituted as the rider of RAEBURN. Apprentice Holt was fined $300.

The start of this race was delayed when MIGHTYSUI (T. Bell) cast the near fore plate on the way to the barriers. After the farrier attempted to refit the shoe, MIGHTYSUI continued to be fractious and as a result was unable to be reshod and was a late scratching at 1.03 pm. Stewards ordered that all moneys invested on MIGHTYSUI be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 1.03 pm:

1 cent in the dollar for the Win #4
3 cents in the dollar for place of winner #4
3 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #3

Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards to view the footage of the start of the race to ascertain whether POSTE RESTANTE was afforded a fair start. After viewing the footage, it was evident that as the start was effected POSTE RESTANTE blundered badly and dislodged M. Cahill. Stewards were of the view that POSTE RESTANTE was afforded a fair start and correct weight was declared on the numbers semaphored.

Approaching the 400m GOLD CAPE (P. Holmes) shifted out around the heels of JETSCAPE (J. Byrne) in order to improve, resulting in RAEBURN (A. Allen) being taken wider.

Race 3: CARLTON MID COUNTRY CUP BM85 H’CAP - 1200m

Trainer M. Morris was fined $200 for failing to present BLAKEY BOY on course by the prescribed time.

HEART OF MELBOURNE (G. Colless), THE BLACK SUPERMAN (P. Holmes), ARMA (C. Munce) and ISIS DEVIL (J. Stanley) raced wide throughout.

Near the 800m ISIS DEVIL had to be steadied when tightened for room between HEART OF MELBOURNE, which shifted out slightly, and ARMA, which shifted in. C. Munce (ARMA) was advised to afford his fellow riders greater clearance when shifting ground in the future.

Approaching the 400m SPORTING PAGE (K. Wharton) was inconvenienced when momentarily tightened for room by VIENNE (T. Bell), which shifted in away from BLAKEY BOY (B. Richardson).

Over the concluding stages CABALLO RAPIDO (M. Cahill) had to be eased when tightened for room between HEART OF MELBOURNE, which shifted out slightly, and ISIS DEVIL, which shifted in slightly under pressure.

When asked to explain the disappointing performance of SPORTING PAGE, K. Wharton stated that the gelding was under pressure from the 600m and compounded in the home straight, which he attributed to not being entirely comfortable on today’s rain-affected track. Jockey Wharton also stated that SPORTING PAGE seemed to resent racing to the inside of VIENNE and BLAKEY BOY in the middle stages of the race. A post-race veterinary examination of SPORTING PAGE revealed no abnormalities.

Race 4: TATTERSALL’S ARCADE 1MW H’CAP - 1600m

NOBLE JESTER (B. El-Issa) was slow to begin.

G. Colless, the rider of EMERALD DUKE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that after passing the 1400m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of NOBLE JESTER, resulting in NOBLE JESTER being taken in across the rightful running of HEBITDA (K. Wharton), which had to be checked. G. Colless’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term to commence at midnight on Saturday 7 December and expire at midnight on Tuesday 17 December 2013. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account that the racing manners of HEBITDA contributed to the severity of the incident.

Approaching the 1300m DIENEKES (J. Johnson) brushed the running rail when tightened for room by TAIL AND ALL (A. Holt), which shifted in before being corrected by its rider. Apprentice A. Holt was issued with a reprimand and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.

HEBITDA raced fiercely approaching and passing the 1200m and as a result was allowed to stride forward to a three wide position outside the leaders MR TESTA (R. McMahon) and DANYME (T. Bell).

Near the 1100m DIENEKES (J. Johnson) shifted out, resulting in WALHAAN (G. Goold) being taken wider. WALHAAN then raced three wide for the remainder of the event.

EMERALD DUKE (G. Colless) raced three wide throughout.

Rounding the home turn MR TESTA was inclined to lay out under pressure which enabled TAIL AND ALL (A. Holt) to obtain a run to the inside of MR TESTA soon after straightening. MR TESTA then shifted in slightly near the 300m, resulting in TAIL AND ALL being tightened and making contact with the running rail.

J. Byrne reported that PLUMAGE only travelled for the first half of the race and from the 800m he was most concerned that the horse appeared to be struggling in today’s track conditions. He said that whilst PLUMAGE was somewhat disappointing over the concluding stages, he believed that the heavy track was a contributing factor to the mare’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of PLUMAGE revealed no significant findings.

Race 5: TRAVEL ASSOCIATES CLASSIC F&M PLATE - 1200m

JACQUETTA (R. Wiggins) raced three wide without cover throughout.

Apprentice M. Vance was severely reprimanded for allowing TUKIYO to shift in approaching the 800m when not sufficiently clear of TEAR IT UP (B. El-Issa), which when overracing had to be restrained to avoid the heels of TUKIYO.

LIESELE (G. Colless) commenced to overrace passing the 800m and approaching the 800m dipped in the going.

Approaching the 700m TEAR IT UP, when overracing, struck the heels of TUKIYO and blundered.

For some distance approaching and passing the 600m DOUBTFILLY (M. Cahill) raced in restricted room between CALIENTE (J. Byrne) and ALLTHERIGHTMOVES (L. Cassidy), which when racing wide shifted in and bumped DOUBTFILLY on a number of occasions.

TUKIYO lost its off hind plate in running.

Stewards sought an explanation from G. Colless regarding the disappointing performance of LIESELE. G. Colless explained that the mare travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages but when placed under pressure did not quicken and in his view LIESELE did not handle today’s rain-affected track. A post-race veterinary examination of LIESELE revealed no abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary examination of DISCREET (R. McMahon) revealed the mare to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer K. Schweida was advised that before DISCREET is permitted to race again he must provide a veterinary clearance for the mare, including the results of an ECG, and DISCREET must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial.

Race 6: HARDY BROTHERS JEWELLERS QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1110m

EVOCATIVE (B. El-Issa) was slow to begin.

Soon after the start MISSING PAGE (R. McMahon) shifted out and made contact with MCCONACHY (G. Colless), which as a result shifted out and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of CHOOSE A SAGA (E. Wilkinson).

INTO THE RED (C. Munce) raced ungenerously in the early stages and leaving the 900m shifted out and had to be restrained to avoid the heels of NEUSCHWANSTEIN (R. Wiggins).

Near the 800m HIGH ACE (A. Allen) had to be eased when tightened for room between GOING GOING GONE (C. Lever) and RUDY (L. Cassidy), which shifted out slightly as a result of EVOCATIVE improving quickly to the inside of that runner. DALTON (J. Byrne), which was following and overracing, also had to be steadied as a consequence.

GOING GOING GONE, NEUSCHWANSTEIN, SPURRED UP (M. Vance) and INTO THE RED raced wide throughout.

Race 7: TATTERSALL’S RECOGNITION STAKES - 1600m

As C. Lever was to be overweight, L. Cassidy was substituted as the rider of ABSALON. C. Lever was fined $200.

Trainer B. Smith advised that ZA MAGIC (E. Wilkinson) would be ridden in a forward position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.

DOLLY DOLLY (B. Richardson) was slow to begin.

After being a little slow to begin, BILLY AUCASH (R. Wiggins) had to be checked soon after the start when tightened for room between BLACK CASH (T. Bell) and FALINO (B. Stewart), which began awkwardly and shifted in abruptly. A short distance later FALINO continued to shift in and bumped BLACK CASH.

ZEDLION (J. Byrne) overraced in the early and middle stages and then compounded in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of ZEDLION revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils, to have lost the near hind plate and to have sustained a slight laceration to the near hock. Trainer M. Dunn was advised that ZEDLION would be ineligible to race for 3 months and prior to resuming racing must gallop satisfactorily over 1000m in the presence of a steward.

BLACK CASH raced three wide in the early stages to a point near the 800m.

ELMANTOSH (R. McMahon) and DOZINTMATERANYWAY (R. Thompson) raced wide throughout.

Near the 600m ZEDLION, when weakening, was inconvenienced when tightened for room between ELMANTOSH and FILLYDELPHIA (M. Cahill), which shifted out around the heels of ZA MAGIC.

Race 8: IPG PRINT CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1350m

TYPHOON RED was a late scratching at 9.45 am for veterinary reasons.

Whilst entering the track, CYCLONE BILLY dislodged A. Taylor. When being remounted, CYCLONE BILLY again broke away from its handler, resulting in A. Taylor again being dislodged and CYCLONE BILLY galloping for some distance before being recaptured. CYCLONE BILLY was examined by the veterinary surgeon at the barriers and was passed suitable to race.

TOP RADA (J. Byrne) and LOHAN (J. Johnson) raced wide throughout.

After passing the 100m VENTURE ON (A. Holt) shifted out abruptly, resulting in TOP RADA and CHALUPA (E. Wilkinson) being inconvenienced. Apprentice Holt was advised that in similar circumstances he should stop riding his mounts and attempt to straighten.

B. El-Issa reported that HOLY TOLEDO hung out for a major part of the race when racing three wide without cover.
