Supplementary Report

Trainer D. Murphy pleaded guilty to a charge under LR43 in that he had an unlicensed person in his employ (S. Mitchell), and was fined $200 for use of an unregistered stablehand.

From GCTC, Thursday, 12.12.13

K. Doughty, trainer of STORM FIGHTER, reported to stewards that after returning to her stables the gelding – which, in her opinion, was uncharacteristically agitated prior to the race - had a slow recovery rate which she attributed to the manners of the horse on the day, which had been slow to begin and raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages. As a consequence, she has attempted to freshen the gelding up and will proceed with its current program.

Following him falling in a race at the Sunshine Coast last night, jockey B. El-Issa was examined by the club doctor and was cleared to fulfil his engagements today.

Race 1: Bundaberg Distilling Co Benchmark 95 H'cap – 2100m

Near the 1900m, MR LIGHT BLUE (B. El-Issa) shifted in and made contact with SECRET GARDEN (T. Bell). As a result, SECRET GARDEN became unbalanced and shifted out, making heavy contact with MR LIGHT BLUE.

ZA MAGIC (R. Wiggins) overraced in the middle stages.

Rounding the home turn, POSTE RESTANTE (M. Cahill) was held up and unable to improve for a short distance when racing to the inside of TRAJET (R. Thomson).

SECRET GARDEN (T. Bell) was held up rounding the home turn and had difficulty securing clear running in the home straight until after passing the 200m where it altered course to the outside of POSTE RESTANTE in order to improve.

B. El-Issa, rider of MR LIGHT BLUE, was reprimanded for using his whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MUKADAMAH SON, M. Vance stated that she was of the opinion that the gelding raced flat today, which she attributed to racing on a heavy track at its most recent start. Trainer G. Duncan advised that it was his intention to send MUKADAMAH SON for an immediate spell.

MUKADDAMAH SON lost its near fore plate in running.

Race 2: Shape Consulting Class 6 H'cap - 1350m

HOLY TOLEDO (B. El-Issa) stood flatfooted at the start and lost considerable ground.

STARSTREAMED (J. Taylor) was slow to begin.

Soon after entering the home straight, HOLY TOLEDO (B. El-Issa) had to alter course to the outside of the heels of CABALLO RAPIDO (M. Cahill) and in doing so dipped and became unbalanced.

Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy regarding the disappointing performance of FLYING JET. L. Cassidy stated that the mare never travelled well at any stage and was under hard riding from the 600m and failed to make any ground and proved disappointing. He added that, in his view, FLYING JET was not entirely suited by the firm surface today. Trainer K. Schweida also expressed disappointment and was of the view that the mare may be resenting racing in earmuffs. Mr Schweida will make application to remove the earmuffs for future starts.

Race 3: Walker Technical Phelan Ready Stakes – 1010m

The start of this race was delayed with FLYING LUCKY and GENERATOR GEORGE were difficult to load. Connections were advised that warnings would be placed on both horses regarding their barrier manners.

ELJETEM (J. Byrne) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

Passing the 800m, GENERATOR GEORGE (L. Cassidy) commenced to hang out, which resulted in GROOMED FOR GLORY (G. Goold) and VIENNA ROYALE (M. Cahill) being taken wider. GENERATOR GEORGE continued to hang out and proved difficult to ride for the remainder of the race. Trainer L. Kelly indicated that GENERATOR GEORGE would now be gelded and sent for a spell. Trainer L. Kelly was advised that GENERATOR GEORGE must compete in an official barrier trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to racing again.

Approaching the winning post, BASSILLIQUE (R. McMahon) shifted in abruptly before being corrected by its rider, inconveniencing GOLUANA (T. Harrison).

FLYING LUCKY (B. Stewart) raced greenly under pressure in the home straight.

GROOMED FOR GLORY raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from M. Cahill regarding the performance of VIENNA ROYALE. M. Cahill stated that after being slow to begin, VIENNA ROYALE then shifted out abruptly and became quite unbalanced. He added that soon afterwards he improved to the outside of GROOMED FOR GLORY (G. Goold), and when racing wide commenced to hang out and proved difficult to ride in the middle stages. Jockey Cahill added that approaching the home turn VIENNA ROYALE relaxed for a short distance however rounding the home turn again hung out and continued to do so for the remainder of the event, which placed him at a disadvantage to fully pressure the horse in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination of VIENNA ROYALE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer T. Gollan indicated that he would have liked to have seen the horse ridden with cover, bearing in mind what occurred at the start, however after viewing the patrol films he understood the circumstances that led to jockey Cahill being obliged to race wide. He added that he may experiment with the addition of blinkers for the horse’s next race start. Mr Gollan was advised that VIENNA ROYALE must perform satisfactorily in a trial prior to its next race start.

Race 4: Channel Seven Calaway Gal Stakes – 1010m

AMBITIOUS BLONDE (R. Wiggins) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, bumping VO TREASURE (B. Stewart).

ALL THE ANGELS (A. Spinks) also jumped awkwardly and shifted out, hampering STAR DROP (T. Bell).

TOTALLY SURE (R. McMahon) and RUBY SOHO (R. Thompson) came together at the start.

HOT TEMPO (J. Taylor) was slow to begin.

Approaching the 600m, ELITIST (C. Munce) shifted in and became awkward at the heels of RUBY SOHO (R. Thompson). FREEZETHEMILLIONS (J. Byrne) and GIVE ME TIME (G. Goold), which were following, were also hampered as a consequence.

After passing the 100m, RUBY SOHO shifted out away from TOTALLY SURE.

Over the final 50m, OAKLEIGH GIRL (M. Cahill) shifted out under pressure, taking AMBITIOUS BLONDE onto TOTALLY SURE, which was inconvenienced.

RUBY SOHO shifted out abruptly after passing the winning post.

ELITIST raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

Race 5: Coalscan Just Now H'cap – 1350m

Connections of CRADLE ME advised that it would be ridden in a more forward position if circumstances permit. CRADLE ME was ridden accordingly.

MISS LEIBERT (P. Schmidt) began awkwardly and shifted in, bumping CASINO CARD (J. Morris), which was slow to begin.

After passing the 1200m, DOLPHUS (B. Stewart) improved quickly to the inside of LADY BUTTERFLY (E. Wilkinson) and made heavy contact with LADY ECHELON (T. Bell), which became unbalanced and taking that runner inwards on to the hind quarters of CASINO CARD (J. Morris). B. Stewart, rider of DOLPHUS, was advised to show greater regard for his fellow riders in similar circumstances.

Passing the 800m, ANNA LIZZIE (M. Cahill) and SCORPIO QUEEN (L. Cassidy) had to be eased when racing in restricted room to the inside of GOLD EPONA (J. Byrne), which shifted in slightly.

PLAYTIME (J. Taylor) overraced in the middle stages and approaching the 600m had to be restrained from the heels of JACQUETTA (R. Wiggins).

SCORPIO QUEEN (L. Cassidy) was unable to improve rounding the home turn when placed awkwardly at the heels of MISS LEIBERT (P. Schmidt), which was held up on the home turn.

JACQUETTA (R. Wiggins) and PLAYTIME (J. Taylor) raced 3 wide throughout.

When asked to explain the performance of LADY ECHELON, rider T. Bell stated that he became unbalanced when hampered passing the 1200m and then had to steady LADY ECHELON from the heels of DOLPHUS (B. Stewart) when the pace steadied passing the 700m and following this LADY ECHELON was immediately under pressure and as a result LADY ECHELON dropped the bit and lost ground. He added that the mare had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight, and although the mare finished last, in the circumstances of today’s race, he was not entirely disappointed with the performance.

A post race veterinary examination of LADY ECHELON failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 6: Pages Event Equipment Brisbane H'cap – 1600m

Trainer K. Clark-Peoples was fined $200 for failing to scratch PLAYACTION by the prescribed time.

DOZINTMATERANYWAY (B. Stewart) was slow to begin.

Approaching the 1200m, ESSINGTON (B. El-Issa) was momentarily eased when tightened for room to the inside of DANAGAZE (A. Pattillo).

Passing the 700m, DANAGAZE shifted out, resulting in HORA SEXTA (J. Byrne) being forced wider.

DOZINTMATERANYWAY was unable to secure clear running rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight until passing the 300m.

Approaching the 100m, DOZINTMATERMANYWAY shifted out under pressure, resulting in PEPPERWOOD (R. Thompson) and BANG ON (P. Schmidt) being taken wider.

Inside the final 100m, DANAGAZE shifted out and bumped HORA SEXTA (J. Byrne) on 2 occasions.

B. Stewart reported that DOZINTMATERANYWAY put in a number of awkward strides in the early stages of the race until rounding the home turn when it joined the main body of the field and commenced to travel comfortably. Trainer L. Birchley was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of DOZINTMATERANYWAY.

DOZINTMATERANYWAY lost its off hind plate in running.

Stewards questioned M. Cahill regarding the performance of FILLYDELPHIA. He stated that the mare travelled well in the early and middle stages but when BILLY AUCASH (R. Wiggins) improved to his outside leaving the 600m he attempted to improve to the outside of BLACK CASH, however FILLYDELPHIA was immediately under pressure and was disappointing in the home straight. He added that due to the lack of early speed he settled outside the leader and although the mare has raced well when ridden in a similar manner previously he was of the view that FILLYDELPHIA may be better suited to racing in a midfield position with cover. Trainer R. Heathcote was also disappointed with the performance and agreed that FILLYDELPHIA maybe better suited ridden with cover. A post race veterinary examination of FILLYDELPHIA revealed it to be lame in the off foreleg. Mr Heathcote was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for the horse prior to its next race start.

DOZINTMATERANYWAYA lost its off fore plate in running.

Race 7: Trade Coast Legal Gold Edition Plate – 1200m

ARCHITECT (A. Spinks) was slow to begin.

TINTO (M. Cahill) was restrained by its rider from the barrier to the rear of the field to cross closer to the rail.

OLYMPIC ANTHEM (R. Thompson) was hampered near the 50m when RUDY (L. Cassidy) shifted out away from ROYAL SCRIBE (T. Bell).
NEUSCHWANSTEIN, ROYAL SCRIBE and OLYMPIC ANTHEM (R. Thompson) raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy regarding the tactics he adopted in the early stages on RUDY whereby he restrained towards the rear of the field, which was in contrast to its most recent start. He stated that as there was a significant amount of speed drawn to his inside, soon after the start rather than be caught wide, he elected to restrain towards a rearward position to find a position closer to the rail with cover. Stewards also asked L. Cassidy about the overall performance of RUDY. He stated that after settling in a rearward position he improved into the race from the 600m and when shifting wider on the track passing the 300m he was inconvenienced when ROYAL SCRIBE (T. Bell) shifted out away from NEUSCHWANSTEIN (V. Colgan), which resulted in him having to alter course to the outside of that runner. L. Cassidy further stated that RUDY worked to the line well and will be better suited in races over a further distance than that of today’s race.

Stewards questioned J. Byrne, rider of DALTON, as to whether he had the opportunity to improve between DRUM LINE (T. Harrison) and CHOOSE A SAGA (E. Wilkinson) near the 250m. J. Byrne stated he initially attempted to take advantage of that run, however DALTON did not have the necessary turn of foot to quicken and at the same stage CHOOSE A SAGA shifted in slightly, which resulted in the run closing and him having to alter course to the outside of INTO THE RED (C. Munce) approaching the 100m. Stewards accepted the explanation given by J. Byrne.

TINTO (M. Cahill) had to be eased near the 200m when DALTON (J. Byrne) shifted out when not quite clear.

ARCHITECT (A. Spinks) was unable to secure clear running between the 200m and approaching the 100m and had to be checked when disappointed for a run between DRUM LINE (T. Harrison) and CHOOSE A SAGA (E. Wilkinson), which at the same stage shifted in abruptly away from INTO THE RED.

A post race veterinary examination of TINTO revealed the horse to be exhibiting soreness in the off foreleg. Trainer R. Lipp was advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to the horse’s next race start.

Race 8: Carlton Draught Benchmark 85 H'cap – 1200m

WONDERFUL JESTER (E. Kehoe) blundered at the start.

ONETIMEATBANDCAMP (T. Bell) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, bumping FLYING HOME (A. Holt).

Soon afterwards, AFTER BARON (K. Matheson) shifted in, resulting in BY CHOICE (M. Cahill) being taken inwards onto FLYING HOME, which bumped heavily with ONETIMEATBANDCAMP. K. Matheson, rider of AFTER BARON, was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

A. Holt, rider of FLYING HOME, dropped his whip near the 300m.

BY CHOICE, ONETIMEATBANDCAMP and THIRSTY FOR BLOOD (P. Schmidt) raced 3 wide throughout.

K. Matheson (AFTER BARON) was further reprimanded for leaving the course without first obtaining the permission of the stewards.

R. Wiggins (Stradon) explained that he anticipated racing in a forward position as in accordance with its usual pattern. He said today the gelding was not as fractious in the barriers and began extremely well. He said BLAKEY BOY, which had drawn to his inside had crossed to the lead and whilst crossing with that horse he endeavoured to restrain to race behind the leader however his mount overraced and proved difficult, therefore he allowed it to remain racing outside the leader. He said whilst he was aware the tempo was fast he was unaware of the lead that the 2 horses had established.

A post race veterinary examination of TRISKELE revealed the gelding to be suffering from heat stress.
