Race 7: Peter Stein’s 80th CG&E Class 3 H'cap – 1350m

On return to scale a protest was lodged by A. Holt, rider the 2nd placegetter, BUAKAW, against PRIMED TO WIN (B. Stewart) being declared the winner, alleging interference on entering the home straight and again near the 100m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the stewards patrol video, it was established that near the 400m, PRIMED TO WIN shifted out in order to improve, forcing FATHER SHADY (T. Harrison) and BUAKAW, which was racing to the outside, slightly wider on the track. Stewards deemed this shift by PRIMED TO WIN as having no material effect on the chances of BUAKAW.

It was further evident after passing the 100m that PRIMED TO WIN shifted out under heavy riding and made contact with BUAKAW. Bearing in mind the where this interference took place and the margin between the 2 horses of a nose at the finish, stewards were comfortably satisfied that had this incident not occurred that BUAKAW would have beaten PRIMED TO WIN, and therefore the protest was upheld and the Judge’s placings altered to read: No. 1 – Buakaw – 1st No. 3 – Primed To Win – 2nd No. 9 - Not So Sober – 3rd No.5 – Suggesta Star – 4th.

Apprentice L. Tarrant, rider of COUNTRY COMMAND, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 400m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of QUIET COLLECT (B.
