Race 2: Cellarbrations Liquor Stores CG&E Maiden H'cap - m
Trainer S. Kendrick was fined $200 for the late gear change of blinkers on for FEELIN’ THE HEAT.
Trainer V. Heading was fined $100 for the late declaration of J. Orman as the rider of MARMOLEJO.
FEELIN’ THE HEAT (M. Cahill) was slow to begin.
Near the 1200m, PINTERRA (G. Goold) got its head up when being restrained, shifted in and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of MR SANCHEZ (V. Colgan), resulting in that horse becoming badly unbalanced. Following this, PINTERRA then raced very ungenerously and threw its head about. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on PINTERRA regarding its racing manners.
Jockey V. Colgan was unable to offer any explanation for the performance of MR SANCHEZ. He stated that after receiving a heavy bump in the early stages the horse never travelled and had to niggle his mount for a considerable distance in the early stages for the horse to maintain its position. A post race veterinary examination of MR SANCHEZ failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer B. Smith undertook to report to stewards any abnormality that comes to his notice in the ensuing days.
Race 3: James Boags F&M Class 3 H'cap – 1200m
As J. Johnson was unable to claim down to her riding weight on TIANA, permission was granted for J. Orman to be substituted as the rider of that horse. In the circumstances, the explanation tendered by J. Johnson was accepted.
On jumping, NOT A SINGLEMOMENT (T. Bell) and PERFECT RAINBOW (K. Yoshida) made heavy contact.
TIANA (J. Orman) was slow to muster speed.
Near the 800m, when RULING MISS (T. Harrison) was restrained, COUNTRY COMMAND (L. Tarrant), which was following, had to be steadied. TIANA, which was following, COUNTRY COMMAND, was checked as consequence. Trainer T. Harrison, rider of RULING MISS, was admonished for unnecessarily steadying the pace of the race at this stage.
After the 600m, NOT A SINGLEMOMENT endeavoured to shift out from behind LILY MY GIRL (M. Cahill). However COOLOOLA (R. Wiggins), which was racing to the outside, was able to hold its racing line, resulting in NOT A SINGLEMOMENT being disappointed for a run at the 500m.
COOLOOLA raced 3 wide with cover.
Race 4: Bundaberg Rum Small Batch QTIS 3yo Maiden Plate – 1200m
SWIFT AND SASSY (T. Harrison) overraced badly in the early stages when being restrained and was awkward at the heels of SACKFUL (B. Stewart).
ZARFASTAR (V. Colgan) also pulled hard in the early and middle stages.
On straightening, CALEDONIA CALL (T. Bell) endeavoured to improve into a run between BIDZIIL (M. Cahill) and OFFIAH (C. Munce) and when doing so approaching the 200m BIDZIIL then shifted out marginally resulting in CALEDONIA’S CALL being crowded for room and taken out on to the hind quarters of OFFIAH, which turned that horse in, resulting in it becoming badly unbalanced. Stewards being satisfied that as the run which presented itself was suitable for CALEDONIA CALL to improve, took no action against any rider.
In the early part of the straight, SACKFUL had difficulty finding clear running.
J. Orman, rider of REAL ROCKER, explained that from the awkward draw it was intended to try and find a position midfield with cover. He said that as soon as the gates were released he elected to restrain his mount in the hope he would find a position towards the rear with cover outside ZARFASTER and behind SWIFT AND SASSY (T. Harrison). He added he was inconvenienced by both of these runners, which were overracing badly and shifting away from the rail. He said that from the 800m he considered improving his position however ZARFASTER, which was continuing to overrace, improved resulting in him being left 3 wide at the tail. He was then shifted wider from that point by ZARFASTAR, which itself was endeavouring to improve into the race. Apprentice Orman added that in hindsight he may have erred by not restraining his mount to a position behind ZARFASTAR, but explained he elected not to do so because of the manner in which that horse was racing. The explanation tendered by J. Orman was accepted.
Race 5: Keno Hit The Jackpot Class 5 H'cap – 1200m
SWEET AND VICIOUS (T. Harrison) was slow into stride and then was inconvenienced when CONHENRI (B. El-Issa) was taken out slightly by MAURY (T. Wolfgram). MAURY, which was unable to obtain a position closer than 3 wide, then hung out from making the turn near the 800m. Apprentice T. Wolfgram added that MAURY was on the wrong leg whilst turning, which made it awkward for MAURY to take the turn.
Near the 700, SIMPLY SMART (J. Johnson) steadied the pace. FRACTIONS (M. Cahill), which was following, was eased, resulting in FRACTIONS having to be checked away from that horse’s heels.
On straightening, BARON DOURO (C. Schmidt) was inclined to hang in and then near the 150m had to be restrained and shifted out to find clear running.
Race 6: Players Choice Diamond Class 4 H'cap – 1350m
WRITTEN ABOVE ALL (K. Wharton) and VICTORVETO (E. Wilkinson) were slow to begin.
SISTER EMMA (J. Byrne) was checked on jumping away when tightened by HYPOTHESIS (L. Tarrant), which shifted in.
OLD FEELING (R. Wiggins) began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly.
Near the 600m, OCTANE FLYER (M. Cahill) was bumped by WRITTEN ABOVE ALL (K. Wharton), which was endeavouring to shift out.
On straightening, WRITTEN ABOVE ALL was steadied when disappointed for a run between TREASURE MAP (J. Orman) and OLD FEELING (R. Wiggins), which shifted out.
ETRANGERE (C. Van Der Werf) raced wide without cover.
R. Wiggins, rider of OLD FEELING, was fined $300 for using his whip 7 times prior to the 100m. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account jockey Wiggins had recently been penalised for a similar breach.
A post race veterinary examination of HYPOTHESIS revealed it had been galloped on on the near hind leg.
Race 7: IGT Australia Benchmark 75 H'cap – 1600m
CARBON TAIKUN (M. Cahill) was slow into stride.
In the early stages both PULSAR (T. Harrison) and HERE’S ROGER (T. Wolfgram) were caught extremely wide. T. Harrison then elected to allow PULSAR to stride forward to a position outside the leader.
Near the 600m, PULSAR was steadied when crowded slightly by SON OF COCO (L. Tarrant), which improved quickly around it. L. Tarrant, rider of SON OF COCO, was advised to exercise more care.
From the 500m, IF EVER (T. Bell) was badly held up behind the tiring MR TESTA (J. Orman).
Approaching the 400m, BARONESS ZEENA (L. Cassidy) was badly crowded for room between HERE’S ROGER (T. Wolfgram) and INNER VIKING (R. Wiggins), which shifted out to avoid the heels of the tiring MR TESTA.
J. Orman, rider of MR TESTA, explained he had to make use of the gelding in the early stages and then down the back straight he was concerned he was not properly clear of I’M BUSTED (A. Allen) and therefore elected to remain racing one off the fence. After viewing the film, J. Orman stated that from the 800m when he was then properly clear of I’M BUSTED he would have been better served shifting that horse to cross to race on the rail. He said after this, MR TESTA from the 600m commenced to weaken and did not finish the race off.
Race 8: Remember Wayne Wilson CG&E Class 3 H'cap – 1200m
Connections advised from the wide barrier ZIZZELDO would be ridden midfield with cover if circumstances permit. ZIZZELDO subsequently raced behind midfield.
PIGGY BANK (A. Best) was slow to begin.
WATLING (B. Grylls) began very awkwardly and shifted in abruptly, making heavy contact with LEAD THE WAY (J. Byrne).
At the 1000m, PIGGY BANK was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of EVOCATIVE (T. Bell), which itself was taken in by PHOENIX FORCE (A. Butler).
Near the 700m, DANORO LAD (S. Fawke), which was racing very keenly, had to be restrained.
Passing the 600m, LYNYRD SKYNYRD (G. Colless) was bumped by RILE (P. Holmes), which was endeavoring to shift out.
Rounding the home turn, EVOCATIVE (T. Bell) had difficult improving into the race.
On straightening, LYNYRD SKYNYRD was again bumped heavily by RILE (P. Holmes), which shifted out away from the tiring LUCKY ELITE (B. Appo).
Over the final 50m, PIGGY BANK (A. Best) was badly held up at the heels of ROMBA TOM (M. Cahill).
‘
LUCKY ELITE (B. Appo) raced 3 wide without cover.
