QLD TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT WED.25.8.99

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr A. Reardon (Chairman); Mr T. Bailey; Mr G. Ireland; Mr D. Aurisch; Mr W. Birch (Cadet).

WEATHER - OVERCAST/SHOWERY TRACK - SLOW RAIL - 9.5M ALL TRACK

GENERAL: As S. Seamer was indisposed, the following replacements were approved: Race 4. STAR CLIP - M. Pelling. Race 5. I SEE RED - J. Byrne. Race 8. PACIFIC CONNECTION - B. Stewart.

RACE 1: TOD MAID H'CAP - 1849M.

WE SHALL DANCE was slow to begin.

Near the 600m., KAZAKH BELLE had to be checked when tightened for room between DIAMOND TED, which had improved quickly, and PAPANICK, which after initially shifting out, shifted back in when tiring.

G. Colless reorted that IT'S A KIA was inclined to hang in for the entire length of the straight.

G. Palmer reported that WE SHALL DANCE did not travel well from the 1400m., and that whilst the gelding had previously won on a slow track, it failed to handle the prevailing track conditions today. A veterinary examination of WE SHALL DANCE failed to reveal any abnormality.

RACE 2: PRINCESS TERESINA H'CAP - 1200M.
.
RIPASYN was slow to begin.

Approaching the first turn, SCALATRICE shifted in and away from BE COOL and as a result made contact with CAMPANULA.

MIDNIGHT JASS had to be restrained off the heels of CAMPANULA approaching the 800m..

RACE 3: SCOMELD H'CAP - 1400M.

As BRITANNICUS had in the past failed to handle similar track conditions as experienced in race 1, stewards acceded to a request from trainer S. Cooke to withdraw BRITANNICUS, and the gelding was subsequently declared a late scratching at 12.38. S. Cooke was advised that in future, BRITANNICUS must be scratched when the track rating is slow or worse.

After leaving the 1200m., COME ON KENNY shifted in, taking VISLANDA in on to COBB 'N' CO. COBB 'N' CO then commenced to overrace and continued to do so until after entering the straight. COBB 'N' CO then shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages, which obliged its rider, J. Byrne, to straighten his mount.

A. Pattillo, rider of PIET HEYN, accidentally dropped his whip near the 300m..

RACE 4: SIERRA QUEEN H'CAP - 1200M.

Stewards accepted the reason for the late scratching of EL CARGO at 8.08 a.m..

CALL NOW blundered on jumping away.

TOUCH OF FREEDOM jumped away awkwardly, brushing the starting gate.

RACE 5: MERCHERIE H'CAP - 1200M.

GLENNAL was declared a late scratching at 9.10 a.m.. A veterinary certificate was tendered.

DRAGON HEART shifted in on jumping away, making contact with PLAN DE LA TOUR. DRAGON HEART then continued to shift in, despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in PLAN DE LA TOUR and PARADISIAC being checked when tightened on to GRIZZLY SUPREME. A short distance later, GRIZZLY SUPREME had to be steadied off SAHARA JOY when taken in by DRAGON HEART.

Passing the 600m., DRAGON HEART commenced to lose ground when racing between BUTTRESS and TYCOON TONY and as a result GRIZZLY SUPREME, which was following, had to be checked off that runner's heels. GRIZZLY SUPREME then commenced to race ungenerously for some distance.

B. Stewart, rider of GROWING CONCERN, accidentally dropped his whip near the 300m..

A veterinary examination of PLAN DE LA TOUR following the event revealed the horse to be extremely distressed. Connections were be advised that PLAN DE LA TOUR must undergo a full veterinary examination, including cardiac and blood testing, prior to its next race start.

RACE 6: LADY ELWES H'CAP - 1600M.

VIDIFY, which slipped in the horse stall area, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

MISTER I AM was slow to begin.

RACE 7: SUNSET SUE H'CAP - 1400M.

RAISE YOUIR BID dislodged its rider prior to being loaded into the barriers. Whilst RAISE YOUR BID was galloping back to the enclosure, stewards withdrew the gelding at 3.56. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on RAISE YOUR BID were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 9 cents in the dollar on the face value of successful win and place bets placed prior to the withdrawal time.

On return to scale, a protest was lodged by J. Baker, rider of the 2nd placegetter, TENUOUS, against WIDE VISION being declared the winner, alleging interference from the 150m.. It was established that whilst WIDE VISION was inclined to lay in under pressure near the 100m. and made contact with TENUOUS, stewards were of the belief that the interference suffered at this stage was not significant enough to warrant a reversal of placings. Stewards were also of the opinion that the contact made between both horses nearing the line occurred too close to the winning post to have any bearing on the outcome of the race. The protest therefore was dismissed and the Judge's placings confirmed.

RACE 8: CHAMPAGNE KATE H'CAP - 1400M.

After riding in race 6, B. Stewart was examined by the club's doctor and advised to forego his remaining engagement. S. Galloway was substituted as the rider of PACIFIC CONNECTION.

PHYLSON was slow to begin.

Near the 400m., ROTOR, which was tiring, shifted out, resulting in KNONA LEAH having to be steadied to avoid that horse's heels.

S. Galloway, rider of the 5th placegetter, was reprimanded for failing to ride his mount right out to the finish line at least hands and heels.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
