When PITMAN steadied the pace near the 900m., LARGER,which was following, shifted out to avoid that horse's heels, forcing HIS LEGACY wider on the track.
When questioned regarding his ride on TOMMIX, A. Pattillo stated that he had instructions to allow the horse to settle where it was comfortable after jumping away. He explained that TOMMIX began awkwardly and he decided to settle the horse at the tail of the field, however he was surprised that when he dropped his hands the gelding quickly lost touch with the field. A. Pattillo stated he had based this decision on his observations of TOMMIX'S most recent starts where the horse had tended to overrace and pull hard when ridden forward in the early stages. He advised that whilst the horse had worked home fairly well over the concluding stages, it felt flat and never gave the impression it was a genuine winning chance. Trainer J. Shelton confirmed that TOMMIX had on occasions began tardily and the instructions relayed to A. Pattillo were to ride the horse quietly if it began in such a fashion. Mr Shelton suggested that TOMMIX may have reached the end of its preparation and consideration would be given as to whether the horse would be sent for a spell. The explanations were noted. A veterinary examination of TOMMIX failed to reveal any abnormality.
A veterinary examination of LARGER following the event revealed the gelding to have a slower than normal recovery rate.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
