Due to a clerical error J Pollard was shown as the rider of SMOOTH LEWY when in fact apprentice A Merritt had been substituted for J Pollard prior to the deadline for jockey declaration.
Prior to correct weight being semaphored, stewards considered an approach from apprentioce D Crossland to ascertain whether TROUBLE IN HEAVEN had in fact been afforded a fair start. After taking evidence from all relevant parties it was established that TROUBLE IN HEAVEN, which had been fractious in the barriers, reared simultaneously with the start being effected and lost considerable ground. Stewards were satisfied that TROUBLE IN HEAVEN had not been prevented from jumping by the barrier attendant who was merely attempting to assist apprentice D Crossland. Accordingly, stewards deemed TROUBLE IN HEAVEN to be a runner.
S Seamer reported that MACROSTRIKE, which raced three wide throughout the event, had pulled up short in its action. A subsequent veterinary examination of the gelding, however, failed to reveal any abnormality.

As the start was effected VIA SINAI reared and lost ground. This resulted in J Stanley's left foot becoming displaced from the iron, which he then took a short distance to regain. As VIA SINAI had not previously offended in a similar manner in its career, trainer P McLeod was advised that a warning was being placed on that gelding.
BLESSED TYCOON was slow to begin.
MOVING VIOLATION, which hung out from the 600m, was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon who reported that the gelding was sore in the off foreleg. Trainer J Lyons was advised that MOVING VIOLATION must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before its next race start.
