TATTERSALL'S RACING CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 23.06.01
STEWARDS PANEL: Mr S Railton (Chairman), Mr J Hackett, Mr D Hensler, Mr W Flynn, Mr R Doyle, Mr D Aurisch, Mr P Gillard.
WEATHER – FINE TRACK - FAST RAIL – OUT 5.5M
GENERAL: Stewards declared CRYPTAVIA (Race 5) and ARAGONCE (Race 6) late withdrawals at 7.40 a.m. when the agent for trainer R Cameron lodged the aforementioned withdrawals after the 7.30 a.m. deadline.
As S Katsidis was indisposed, the following riding replacements were approved:

RACE 1: EXPRESS POST H'CAP – 1200M
OVER THE RANGE was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1000m THE WRECK had to be momentarily steadied off the heels of IN OUR TIME when taken in by SISTER WARRIOR.
IN OUR TIME made the 600m crossing awkwardly and shifted out making contact with the hind quarters of SOUPLESSE.
For some distance approaching the 200m THE WRECK was impeded for a run between CRYPTIC RED and SOUPLESSE.
Passing the 200m IN OUR TIME had to be steadied to avoid the heels of OVER THE RANGE, which shifted out to improve.
A Merritt, the rider of 2nd placegetter NO INTENTION, accidentally dropped his whip at the 150m.
M Pelling reported that SISTER WARRIOR did not stretch out comfortably in the race and appeared to feel the firm surface. The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that the filly was short in its action after the race.
RACE 2: CITY ROWERS H'CAP – 1400M
Passing the 1000m CELESTIAL BEAT had to be restrained off the heels of CELESTIAL SPRINTER which in turn had been steadied by its rider to take a trailing position.
After being disappointed for a run to the inside of BEAR RAID approaching the 200m, PAUSE shifted out inconveniencing MISS ARYAN.
RACE 3: CARLTON DRAUGHT SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1400M
Approaching the 1200m POLISH THE SILVER shifted in, resulting in YORUBA being momentarily cramped on to TREVISCAY.
TREVISCAY and YORUBA were obliged to race wide in the event.
Upon straightening ZEE had to be steadied when tightened for room between POLISH THE SILVER and AMAIZCAY which shifted out to obtain clear running. G Boss, the rider of AMAIZCAY, was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.
G Boss reported that in the early stages of the straight AMAIZCAY was reluctant to take a run to the inside of TREVISCAY.
RACE 4: AUSTRALIA POST SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES – 1400M
A Pattillo was permitted to ride HEAVEN'S QUEST ½ kilogram overweight as no other senior rider was available to ride the horse at its allocated weight.
CHAMPION OF DANES dislodged its rider B Prebble during the preliminary and whilst galloping back towards the enclosure made contact with the outside fence. Acting on the advice of the Club's veterinary surgeon that the colt was suffering some soreness to the off shoulder, stewards ordered the withdrawal of CHAMPION OF DANES at 2.01 p.m. On the announcement of correct weight, all monies invested on CHAMPION OF DANES were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 7 cents in the dollar for the win and 8 cents in the dollar for the place on the face value of win and place tickets applicable.
CYBERNETIC jumped away very awkwardly and made contact with ALL POINTS NORTH.
MARAUDING LASS and RUMBLE bumped heavily at the start.
Approaching the 1200m POETIC HEIGHTS, when being steadied off the heels of STORM ZERO, got its head up and raced ungenerously and then shifted in despite the efforts of its rider Z Purton, resulting in ABOVE ALL being checked and in turn causing crowding in which BRIDAL HILL, PENTATHLON and DUTCH HARRY all meeting with severe interference. D'ARGENT FILLE and MARAUDING LASS, which were following, also had to be checked as a consequence. In this incident DUTCH HARRY became unbalanced and shifted in bumping the hind quarters of HEAVEN'S QUEST and in turn shifted in towards CYBERNETIC which as a consequence crowded COUNTER AGENT and HIGHPOWER LADY. Stewards will interview trainer M Gerrard regarding the racing manners of POETIC HEIGHTS which was racing for the first time in blinkers.
ABOVE ALL, BRIDAL HILL and MARAUDING LASS were obliged to race wide in the middle stages.
At the 650m DUTCH HARRY was inclined to lay in on to HIGHPOWER LADY.
At the 350m COUNTER AGENT shifted out and made contact with VOLKMAN.
Between the 300m and the 150m PENTATHLON had difficulty obtaining clear running.
Approaching the 200m D'ARGENT FILLE was obliged to alter course to the inside when disappointed for a run between PENTATHLON and DUTCH HARRY which shifted out under pressure.
At the 100m POETIC HEIGHTS shifted out and bumped the hind quarters of VOLKMAN.
RACE 5: CARLTON WINTER STAKES – 1500M
Acting under the powers of AR128, stewards endorsed a $50 fine imposed by the starter upon jockey J Innes, the rider of FIGURANTE. This penalty was imposed in light of J Innes's failure to adhere to the direction of the starter to place his feet in the irons whilst parading behind the barriers.
ABEEL HOSTESS, SUNSET and HEATHER were slow to begin.
FIGURANTE shifted out at the start, inconveniencing TWIN FORTUNE.
At the 1350 ALOHA CHARM shifted in resulting in BETRILLE, NORMANDIE, ENA'S TREASURE and ABEEL HOSTESS all being placed in restricted room.
A short distance later PORTO ROCA, when racing ungenerously, shifted in and away from CLASSIC CLICHÉ, resulting in ALOHA CHARM being taken in further causing BETRILLE, NORMANDIE, ABEEL HOSTESS and ENA'S TREASURE to be further tightened and checked by their respective riders. Whilst stewards accepted that he was not fully responsible for the incident, G Boss was nonetheless reprimanded for initially placing runners to his inside in restricted room.
At the 1300m TRICKED had to be checked when BETRILLE shifted out after being tightened in the aforementioned incident.
M Pay, the rider of RAVEN'S PAL, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shift in at the 1000m when not clear of TWIN FORTUNE, resulting in TWIN FORTUNE being checked. In determining penalty, stewards heard that M Pay had not been suspended for a breach of careless riding for a period of at least 7 years. In recognition of his exemplary record, stewards issued a reprimand in lieu of a suspension.
TWIN FORTUNE, GILDED WINGS and TRISTRAM'S SHOW were obliged to race wide in the middle stages.
ABEEL HOSTESS and ALOHA CHARM both had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the straight.
N Rawiller, the rider of PORTO ROCA, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, the careless riding being that over the concluding stages of the event he allowed PORTO ROCA to shift in under pressure when not clear of BERLIN, resulting in BERLIN being checked close to the finishing line when tightened on to ALOHA CHARM. Stewards deemed the interference suffered by BERLIN cost that horse 3rd placing. N Rawiller was suspended from riding in races for a period of 8 meetings to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 27 June, and expire at midnight on Sunday, 8 July.
RACE 6: MERCEDES-BENZ STAKES – 1200M
On jumping away FEDERAL AGENT's rider M Cahill's foot slipped from the near-side stirrup iron. M Cahill regained the use of his iron soon after the start.
It was found that ZARIZ lost its off fore plate in the early stages of the event.
ZARIZ was obliged to race wide on the first turn.
EMINENT CHEVAL ran up on to the heels of KING LOTTO on the home turn.
For the entire length of the straight, PITTANCE was impeded for a run between FEDERAL AGENT and ZARIZ.
EMINENT CHEVAL was also held up for clear running until nearing the 100m.
RACE 7: TATTERSALL'S CUP – 2200M
CAPTAIN TEST, which escaped from its attendant and galloped off course before being recaptured in the streets adjacent to Eagle Farm racecourse, underwent a series of veterinary examinations. Subsequently at 3.28 p.m. CAPTAIN TEST was withdrawn acting on the advice of the Club's veterinary surgeon who indicated that the gelding was showing signs of dehydration and had not recovered sufficiently to enable it to participate in the event.
B Prebble, the rider of SPIRIT OF WESTBURY, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to shift in at the winning post on the first occasion when not clear of GRAMPIANS, resulting in GRAMPIANS being severely hampered and in turn tightened on to CHEMICAL BROTHER, which was also tightened and checked by its rider D Griffin. KINCOURT, which was racing to the inside of CHEMICAL BROTHER, had to be severely checked when tightened on to the running rail. B Prebble was suspended for a period of 10 meetings to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 27 June, and expire at midnight on Thursday, 12 July.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MR. SMUGG, M Cahill stated that the gelding travelled well during the event, however he was most surprised by the gelding's failure to respond when placed under pressure prior to the home turn. M Cahill was unable to offer any excuses for MR. SMUGG's performance and indicated that he could detect no physical abnormalities upon pulling up. This was confirmed by the Club's veterinary surgeon who reported that he was unable to detect any abnormalities at the time of inspection post-race. MR. SMUGG was sent to be swabbed. Trainer S B Laming was at a loss to explain MR. SMUGG's performance and undertook to report to stewards the results of further veterinary examinations including the results of an endoscopic examination which he intended to have carried out.
RACE 8: TATTERSALL'S OPEN MILE – 1600M
At the 1500m ROULETTE shifted in resulting in CHEVERNY and FINAL FORECAST both being hampered. Whilst stewards accepted that his mount was inclined to shift away from BRIGHTER SCENE, J Taylor, the rider or ROULETTE, was nonetheless cautioned.
KENCONCARNE hung in badly under pressure in the straight which prevented G Boss from being able to fully test that horse.
ALL WINNERS, IN OUR TIME AND MR. SMUGG WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
