On the first turn EMPHASIS was cramped for room between LINCOLN ROAD and MIDNIGHT WARRIOR which shifted out.

LINCOLN ROAD commenced to race fiercely on the first turn and continued to do so throughout the middle stages. M Cahill, the rider of LINCOLN ROAD, reported that as a consequence his saddle rolled slightly to the off side which compounded his difficulties.

MIDNIGHT WARRIOR shifted out on the home turn making contact with LINCOLN ROAD.

As B Stewart was to be overweight, G Killen was substituted as the rider of VOLKMAN. B Stewart was fined the sum of $500.

BAAL YABBA and LIMITED IMPULSE were obliged to race wide in the middle stages.

Passing the 800m VOLKMAN commenced to overrace and soon afterwards shifted out forcing DAMIGOS to be checked when taken out across the heels of LIMITED IMPULSE.

AGITATOR and VOLKMAN were both held up for clear running until after passing the 200m.

A veterinary examination of PRINCESS CLANG, which weakened in the straight, failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer K Tinsley indicated that in his view PRINCESS CLANG may have swallowed its tongue during the event. He also indicated that he would strongly consider using a tongue tie on the filly at its next start.

ARAKAI lost its off fore plate during the event.

RACE 4: NEWSWORKS H'CAP – 1200M

Z Purton, the rider of MACHTIG MIHI PANIS, was fined $200 for negligence in that he proceeded to the mounting enclosure and mounted MACHTIG MIHI PANIS without his protective vest.

J Taylor, the rider of PIONEER, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that at the 800m he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of NO INTENTION, resulting in NO INTENTION having to be restrained and as a consequence shifting in tightening the ground of SCHUMANN. In this incident MISS CRABOPPLE, which was following, had to be severely checked and shifted out causing SHADIYM to be checked. SNIPPETS' CHARM, CELESTIAL BEAT and MACHTIG MIHI PANIS were also hampered. J Taylor was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, with the suspension to expire at midnight on Sunday, 8 July.

From the 250m until after passing the 100m GRAND CHARIOT was badly held up for clear running.

CHARITY SPRING was also impeded for clear running over the final 200m.

When questioned regarding MACHTIG MIHI PANIS settling near the rear of the field, apprentice Z Purton indicated that he had instructions from trainer P Blackwell to ride the horse quietly early and allow it to settle where it felt comfortable, anticipating that the gelding would be positioned mid-field. He further indicated that MACHTIG MIHI PANIS began only fairly and rather than being caught wide early, he steadied to obtain a position close to the fence, however the horse threw its head up on a number of occasions and lost further ground.

The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that SCHUMANN was galloped on behind the near hind fetlock and that some old scarring inside the off hind pastern had been opened up.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by M Smith-Lester, the rider of 5th placegetter GLADMAC, against DEEDS NOT WORDS being declared 2nd, alleging interference near the 200m. It was established that near the 200m, when G Killen, the rider of DEEDS NOT WORDS, angled his mount around the heels of MISS ANNA LOUISE to obtain clear running, GLADMAC was taken out on to the hind quarters of DOFF. As a consequence of this contact on its hind quarters, DOFF was turned in across the running of GLADMAC which resulted in that horse racing in restricted room for some distance. Stewards subsequently upheld the objection and amended the placings to read:

1st THOMAS JOHN
2nd MISS ANNA LOUISE
3rd SURE SIGN
4th GLADMAC
5th DEEDS NOT WORDS

At a subsequent inquiry G Killen was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in relation to the interference suffered by GLADMAC near the 200m and was suspended for a period of 8 meetings with the suspension to expire at midnight on Thursday, 12 July.

Just prior to the 600m crossing FINNIGAN had to be restrained off the heels of MISS ANNA LOUISE which shifted in when not quite clear.

The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that DEEDS NOT WORDS bled from both nostrils following the event. As this was the second occasion on which the gelding had bled, it will be banned from racing for life. A swab sample was taken from DEEDS NOT WORDS.
